KEywords: librarianship, information science, information technology, terminology, lexicography, standardization, Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania. Librarianship terms are increasingly difficult to identify in global terminology networks. New tools of information technology and computational linguistics currently allow the creation and management of multilingual big data flows of terminological data. All information systems are based on properly organized and standardized terminology, and their quality is often determined by the chosen terminology sources. Therefore, the creation and harmonization of special dictionaries, thesauri, ontologies and other terminology tools has acquired special significance in the high added value intellectual knowledge economy. The new strategy for the implementation of the European Interoperability Framework, published on 23 March 2017 by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Information Technology, stresses the importance of recognising that “data and information are public goods that should be properly created, collected, managed, protected and preserved, and that mai dalijamasi“ (COM 2017: 134 final). Taip pat pastebėta, kad šiuo should be adequately accessible, accessible and accessible to all”. Modern librarianship has become one of the most standardized and regulated fields of activity, whose vocabulary consists mainly of constantly updated editions of international standards, manuals, regulations and rules. The greatest influence on the development of library terminology in recent years has been the significantly increased flow of norms and legal documents in this field: translations of the standards and guidelines of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and documents of other international organizations form the fastest changing set of terminological data with new needs and opportunities for international integration. This is a special peculiarity of library terminology, forcing it to move along the same computer technology highway, requiring adequate competences, technologies and resources. Therefore, the scope of librarians' professional terminology and 211Terminology | 2019 | 26 The role of terminology in global information networks and systems becomes more relevant not only for the professional community itself, but also for the users of those systems. In celebration of the centenary of the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania (hereinafter – the National Library), we set the goal of summarizing and evaluating the accumulated experience in terminology management. To achieve this goal, we formulated the main tasks of the research: to analyze nalinėje bibliotekoje sukauptus terminologijos išteklius, susisteminti bithe bibliographic information about them in the National Library, to perform a typological bibliographical analysis of the content and external characteristics of the sources, to evaluate the terminology management work in the historical context and to foresee the most promising ways of terminology management development. The study is based on bibliographical, typological and statistical analysis of identified sources and descriptive and factual methods of systematization of identified material. STANDARDIZATION In global practice, librarianship is considered a branch of information science, therefore there is a tendency to manage and develop common terminology. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards file (01.040) klasifikacijoje terminologijos ir terminografijos standartai yra priskirti pirmojo klasifikacijos lauko grupei (01. 020), o žodynai išskirti atskiroje grupė containing standardized terminology for archiving, library, documentation and information (01.040.01). Also to this group are assigned the standards of priklauso informacijos technologijų (01. 040. 35) bei popieriaus technologijų (01. 040. 85) standartizuota terminija. Informacijos mokslams priklauarchivistics, librarianship and documentation in the rapidly growing international ISO classification group (01.140.20). Spelling and transliteration standards relevant to librarians form a separate group (01. 140. 10). There is also a wealth of terminology fixed in publishing standards (01.140.40), but the terminology of electronic publishing is scattered across various branch standards. This has happened with most other terms that describe the extraction, dissemination and use of information. The International Standard for Explanatory Dictionary LST ISO 5127:2017 Information and Documentation. Foundations and vocabulary (identical to ISO 5127:2017 Information and documentation – Foundation and vocabulary) consists mostly of library terms. It systematizes the terminology of documents, data carriers and their parts, as well as the terminology of documentation institutions – archives, libraries and museums and their collections; standardized terminology for the subjects of collection planning, development, collection, storage and search, content 212 Nijolė Bliūdžiuvienė Directions of terminology development in the Lithuanian national Violeta Černiauskaitė Martyno Mažvydo bibliotekoje analysis, presentation and description, with detailed definitions of terms describing the use, maintenance, administration and services of information and documents. This standard regulates particularly relevant legal aspects of information and documentation: terms of literary, artistic and industrial property, specified rules of concepts governing copyright, privacy and access to information. In various contexts of this international standard, composite and solid terms containing the word part libraries* are mentioned more than 150 times. In the preamble of the standard, attention is drawn to the fact that the current field of documentation is characterized by closer interdisciplinary cooperation, therefore, individual professional fields and professions such as librarianship, archivistics, text documentation, editing, media documentation, printing, publishing, audio and video documents, broadcasting, museum management, document conservation, etc., are sometimes combined (LST ISO 5127:2017). The authors of the International Explanatory Glossary of Terms standard believe that the ISO 5127 standard should be a means to convey and adequately understand the complex terminology of the documentation field, and at the same time to interact more closely with each other, respecting the specific terminology autonomy, traditions of the various involved organizations and preserving the terms of specific working procedures in these fields. The new edition of the international terminology standard ISO 5127:2017 is an essential resource of approved terminology that can be used for the preparation of its national language versions, thus helping to understand certain terms accurately and, where necessary, to use their exact equivalents in other languages. Equally important is the educational role of the terminology standard – a large set of terminology helps to better understand the field of information and documentation, prepare for further studies and scientific research in this field. Taking into account the development of technology, the content and structure of the vocabulary can be a source for properly formalizing concepts for applied IT solutions, as well as providing the necessary material for creating future ontologies in the field of documentation and information sciences, in order to improve the functioning of automated IT processes. The transformation of documentation and its processes according to IT-based concepts and models has not diminished the importance of terminology and terminological accuracy used in this field. On the contrary, it becomes even more important because, in the case of automated data processing, the terms that define objects must be even more precise. In this way, it is necessary to maintain the documentation and information technology used in this field. 213Terminology | 2019 | 26 to ensure the coherence of the concepts of the notions and to aim to harmonize the terms and concepts so that the integrated general system of documentation and its applicable measures is clearly visible. The standardization of library terminology has become the most important part of the National Library’s terminological work in recent years1, as the flow of documents regulating library activities has been constantly increasing. National Standards and Technology Agency of the Republic of sidėjo 1998 m., kai Nacionalinės bibliotekos iniciatyva buvo įkurtas techKorea. pp. 47. Based on the analysis of official technical committee documents, it can be said that this committee was consistently and responsibly established, providing for a possible development perspective. Since 2004, the technical committee LST TK 47 Information and documentation has been joined by representatives of the main national archives, experts from museums, science and state and private institutions. Participation in the activities of the technical committee is an undeniable form of intersectoral partnership and integration of memory institutions, and libraries were not only the first to get involved in national standardization activities organized according to the principles of international and European standardization, but also, by coordinating standardization activities in the field of information and documentation, carried out a multi-stage restructuring of the technical committee LST TK 47 (Bliūdžiuvienė 2010: 150). In 2000–2015, the Technical Committee LST TK 47 Information and Documentation prepared Lithuanian versions of 23 international standards in this field, which included 1678 terms (Bliūdžiuvienė 2016: 203). 2016– In 2019, the Lithuanian set of information and documentation standards was supplemented by 35 standards, of which only 2 are Lithuanian versions of international standards (LST 2019). According to the second half of 2019, LST TK 47 Information and documentation has 167 valid standards, of which 15 are in Lithuanian. Unfortunately, only 10% of international standards have been adopted in Lithuania by way of translation, others – by way of reproduction, i.e. translated into Lithuanian, or translated in a professional environment, but not officially legalized, but they fall into the necessary set of professional terms. 1 The article is based on the international standard LST ISO 1087a1:2005. The work of terminology. Explanatory dictionary. Part 1. Theory and Application (identical to ISO 1087aj1:2000) provides a definition of terminology and a more detailed explanation of it, which emphasizes that “modern terminology includes any collection, management and presentation of terminological data: the preparation of dictionaries, the creation of terminology databases and banks, the standardization of terms (GaivenytėėButler 2018: 27), drawing attention to the fact that a term standard is a dictionary of standardized terms prepared on the basis of the same terminology principles as term dictionaries” (GaivenytėėButler 2018: 32). 214 Nijolė Bliūdžiuvienė Directions of terminology development in the Lithuanian national Violeta Černiauskaitė Martyno Mažvydo bibliotekoje Therefore, the rapid development of norms governing the activities of libraries and the translation of international standards and other documents in the National Library creates favourable conditions for the minologinių duomenų bazę ir suteikia daugiau galimybių integruotis į tarptautinius profesinės terminijos kontekstus. Svarbu ir tai, kad profesiniai terminų standartai sudaromi sisteminių žodynų principu, tad juos lengviausia integruoti į terminų bazes ar kitus duomenynus. Tad spartūs development of national library standardization. The processes and scales of library standardization have most influenced the development of current library work, the emergence of new terms and changes. In addition, librarians are constantly the first to identify and accurately describe every new text, audio, visual or embedded resource, whether printed or digital, and therefore the terms created in this field must be approved by linguists and well known to the community as a whole. COMPILATION OF GLOSSARIE Nevertheless, the terminology of librarianship in this complex complex of information sciences stands out for its extremely old and rich traditions, reaching not only the times of written, but also oral communication of mankind. There is also accumulated experience of almost three centuries in the preparation of dictionaries of terms. In 1802–1804, a three-volume alphabetical Explanatory Dictionary of Bibliology (Peignot 1802–1804) was published in French. The term library science was first used by the German librarian Martin Schrettinger in 1834 to describe the knowledge of the organization of a library. The early concept of librarianship and the development of terminology were greatly influenced by the development of book studies, polygraphy and book publishing practices. The first Polygraphic Dictionary, published in 1735, was already in two volumes (Barrow 1735). In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, library management and its terminology were mainly supplemented by documentalist research, which expanded the concepts of documents, terminology of knowledge and publications classification, systematizing structures, characteristic not only of libraries. The paradigm of information in librarianship was established after the Second World War, when technological information systems began to be implemented much faster. Therefore, modern librarianship is considered to be part of information and Todėl kelis šimtmečius siekianti daugiareikšmė bibliotekininkystės samcommunication sciences (VLE 2003: 161). The diversity of the past and the historically changing subject coverage are reflected in the practice of preparing dictionaries of terms today. Identifying such sources is relevant, because the library and information, and even more book studies and 215Terminology | 2019 | 26 The number of dictionaries, reference books, encyclopedias and other terminology tools in 26 publishing fields continues to grow, making it increasingly difficult to select suitable and reliable sources of information. The digitization of the sources of terminology heritage has also accelerated, but even open access electronic dictionaries of terms often do not reflect the real situation of terminology, are not updated, are presented without sources or other necessary explanations. The Department of Information Sciences of the National Library of Lithuania carried out a typological analysis of Lithuanian and foreign sources of special lexicography, the principles of methodology and structure, content and external characteristics (Černiauskaitė 2017), it became clear that among the 110 identified sources relevant to librarians, the majority were dictionaries and encyclopedias that continued old traditions and had received several editions. Therefore, it is so important to continue researching and knowing well the history of the sources of terms in these areas. About 70% of the library’s collections consist of printed dictionaries and encyclopedias of srities šaltinių yra atvirosios prieigos žodynai, o jų skaičius sparčiai auga – various types of foreign librarianship terms. A further 20% of this is a favourable environment for the development of terminology in various forms. English-language dictionaries are predominant among librarianship and information sources in recent years – this is also related to the international standardization of these processes. However, in the fields of book studies and publishing, there are many sources in French, Russian and German. The Online Dictionary for Library and Information Science (ODLIS) is one of the most widely cited dictionary of library and information science in the world. However, a distinctive terminological aspect of modern librarianship is the abundance of multilingual sources, determined by the need to translate international standards of the profession into national languages, for example, the international standard of bibliographic description, and the subtleties of the translation and concept of the international multilingual cataloguing dictionary of terms can be studied in 27 languages, including Lithuanian (MulDiCat 2012). Information science terminology is also systematized in solid encyclopedias. Some of them have been awarded and received the titles of best information publications. The terminology can be found in the 73-volume Encyclopedia of Library and Information Sciences, which was prepared by 1300 of the most prominent specialists in individual fields (Kent, Lancour 1968–2003). In addition, encyclopedias are characterized by carefully compiled author and subject auxiliary indexes, convenient for identifying terms. We have ten-, seven-, four-, one-volume encyclopedias not only in English, but also in German, Russian, Polish, 216 Nijolė Bliūdžiuvienė Directions of terminology development in the Lithuanian national Violeta Černiauskaitė Martyno Mažvydo bibliotekoje because they do not describe words, but the phenomena, events and people themselves – it is a great, as if prepared textbook of terms with detailed and precise contexts. Although the subject matter content of library terms is in many cases very clearly defined and internationally unified, the means of linguistic expression are national. And this does not mean that we do not have any national subject matter content of terms that we could not provide to the international community, especially by preparing bilingual or multilingual dictionaries of terms. The terminology of computer science and computing is characterized by a consistent development (GaivenytėaButler 2018: 33). This creates extremely favorable conditions for the management of terminology in tekoje atliekami terminologijos tyrimai leido sukaupti unikalią bibliotekininkystės ir jai gretimų sričių žinių bei duomenų bazę. Terminologijos other related fields. Historiographical studies of the professional language, started in 1986 by Vytautas Rimša, the founder of the National Library, allow to analyze the terminology of librarianship already in the first printed dintų knygų kontekste, sistemingai fiksuojant jos augančius ir įvairėjančius šaltinius (Ralytė, Rimša 1989). The first dictionary of librarianship terms appeared in 1956, when the Lithuanian SSR Book Chamber published the first volume of the Dictionary of Library and Bibliographic Terminology compiled by Izidorius Kisinas (BBT: 1956). At that time, only one volume of the planned Lithuanian–Russian explanatory dictionary of terms was published, the terms of which were approved by the then-existing Terminology Commission of the Lithuanian Language and Literature Institute of the Lithuanian SSR Academy of Sciences. Only four decades later it was possible to unite the specialists and researchers of the National Library of Lithuania, the Lithuanian Language Institute and Vilnius University again, and in 1990–1999 four volumes of the Explanatory Dictionary of Librarianship and Bibliography Terms were published with 2237 systematized terms (language editor St. Keinys) for the fields of documents and publishing, bibliography, cataloguing and library collection formation and management (BBTŽ: 1990–1999). At that time, the terminology of book studies was actively managed. In the encyclopedic dictionary published by Vilnius aktualių knygos istorijos bei knygotyros terminų buvo pateikta nemažai University in 1997 Knygotyra between bibliography and library terms with various explanations and examples. Further developing the traditions of book studies in Lithuania, the terminology of these fields is also consistently managed: updated and supplemented with new definitions lists of the most important terms are published in various teaching materials and other publications. A lot of attention is paid to the harmonization of special terminology at Vilnius University Faculty of 217Terminology | 2019 | 26 These are the most detailed studies of individual terms or glossaries of terms that are very important for the educational process. Currently, the National Library can distinguish several most important directions of terminology management in librarianship: Identification of professional terminology of librarians; contextual and comparative analysis and systematization; creation of terminological data; evaluation and approval of terms; standardisation of terms; preparation of a new version of the glossary; harmonization of terms with national and international documents regulating the field; publication of standardised terms, integration of terms into other Lithuanian and foreign or international terminology sources and databases, banks, textbooks. The Intersectoral Terminology Commission at the National Library recommended that the sources of the term database, which is constantly being compiled, supplemented and updated, should be published in a clear and accessible form of a term dictionary for a wider range of users. After all, published librarian terminology works are only a small part of the currently publicly available data. The prerequisites for the new bilingual Lithuanian-English Dictionary of Librarianship, Information and Book Studies (BIK) (authors: Dr. Nijolė Bliūdžiuvienė and Dr. Jonas Vytautas Valiukėnas) prepared in 2019 were the intensive processes of standardization, research and normization of terms of professional communication of librarians in recent years and the constantly growing flows of English-language specialist literature and information. A comprehensive inventory of terms in the library field was carried out in the new glossary. 20 years after the last edition of the Explanatory Dictionary of Library and Bibliography Terms (BBTŽ 1990–1999) more than eight thousand Lithuanian terms have been systematized with their English equivalents. Against the background of the National Library’s 100th anniversary, it is obvious how the terminology of librarianship grew and in which directions it developed, maintaining close links with information science and book studies terms. They are also relevant to a much wider range of users – scientists, specialists, researchers, other interested persons who are regularly involved in the activities of scientific information, documentary communication, heritage and memory institutions. This dictionary aims to contribute to the standardization of the common Lithuanian language, drawing attention to the constantly emerging new terms reflecting the fundamental technological and managerial changes in library activities. For this purpose, J. V. Valiukėnas chose the usual alphabetical nesting principle of grouping terms for dictionaries and created a new model of the term dictionary, which allows library practitioners to again appreciate the continuous and consistent quality of the preparation of term dictionaries. 224 Nijolė Bliūdžiuvienė Directions of terminology development in the Lithuanian national Violeta Černiauskaitė Martyno Mažvydo bibliotekoje Textual terminology management is not coordinated enough and is the least developed part of the National Library’s terminology work. Terms found in various professional information resources are still difficult to structure and are found late, although their digital or digitized form would allow the use of automatic term recognition technologies. In this activity, it would be worth expanding and supplementing existing textbooks and integrating library and information science texts into them, which would significantly supplement and expand the possibilities of analysis of written language in scientific communication, help deepen the subjective understanding of new areas, and those seeking examples and sources of authentic professional language could use them as encyclopedic or contextual dictionaries. Currently, the accumulated library terminology material far exceeds the traditional boundaries of the term dictionary, standard or other already existing terminology structures, therefore, during additional research, intensive search for new ways and means to preserve and use the already accumulated data. For this purpose, the possibilities of creating more diverse terminology tools are analyzed: term databases, phrasebooks, textbooks, trends in the development of the information system of readable artistic language resources are studied. The aim is to ensure that the currently largely standardized library terminology is consistently and in appropriate forms publicized, further examined and developed, finding direct connections with users, developing the culture of the use of normative terms through various educational programs and measures. When analyzing the direction of terminology management in library work and looking for new strategies of terminological activities, it is important to consider that the professional language of librarians, like most others, no longer exists in isolation, responding to the needs of only one community. Further successful development of integrated language terminology resources in Lithuania is necessary for the harmonious development of terminology in individual fields, and for mutual cooperation and development of terminology in the Lithuanian language. 1990–1999: Dictionary of Library and Bibliography Terms. The article presents consistent analysis of the main results of the terminology work: rapid processes of terminology standardization and preparation of the Dictionary of Librarianship and Bibliography Terms (1990–1999) and the Lithuanian–English Dictionary of Librarianship, Information and Book Science Terms (2019) as well as sources under preparation. A new multilingual dictionary of library terms in English, Lithuanian, French, Russian and German is under preparation and looking possibilities for being a subject in professional cooperation. The most effective period of intensive standardization of professional librarianship terminology drawing on rich experience of lexicographic control by Lithuanian specialists. The librarianship terminology, which has been developed for several centuries, faced many encounters, and many more challenges in drafting, control, standardization and usage of terms are to be met during the contemporary globalization and technological leaps. One of the most urgent issues in the harmonisources and their choice as well as zation of the professional terminology has become expedient development of proper their permanent updating and technological maintenance. Such development of the integrated terminology sources in Lithuania is essential also for the evolution and interaction of terminology of various professional domains. Taking into account that professional terminology is created and developed in circumstances of universal communication, when a language is considered only a communication tool – the fact that impedes the comprehension of its fundamental function, that of preserving culture and identity. For this reason, unique terminological solutions of librarians are of great importance for fostering national terminological databases and integrating them into global international networks.
