POŠKA'S WORDBOARD "SLOWNIK JĘZYKA LITHUAŃSKIEGO, POLSKIEGO I LACINSKIEGO’ Konstantino Sirvydo (1580—1631) trilingual Polish-Latin-Lithuanian dictionary has been used by many authors of printed manuscript Lithuanian ir dictionaries. What influence on the manuscript Dionysus The (1757—1830) Polish-Lithuanian dictionary had Sirvydas dictionary, so far we know little. Boris Larin (1893—1964), compared fourteen similar B letter articles, taken randomly from both iš dictionaries, and concluded that Poškos vocabulary is little dependent on Sirvydo dictionary (Jlapum, 1957 : 135—136). More consiste300 nt comparison of the dictionary articles we have to doubt B. Larin's assertion. In this article we want to show how and how much Poška used Sirvydo dictionary, which words he took from it, how he selected and presented them, etc. We used the fifth edition of Sirvydas’s dictionary, which Poška relied on. Poška himself, like other contemporaries, regarded Sirvydas as a great authority, he highly valued his dictionary, had one defective copy of the fifth edition of the "Dictionarium" of his own, and another one borrowed from Bishop Juozas Arnulfas Giedraitis (1754—1838). Poška’s dictionary was influenced by his contemporary, the poet Silvestras Valiūnas (1789–1831). When he learned that Poška was writing a dictionary of the Lithuanian language, in 1826 he wrote a literary letter in verses entitled "Rašančiam lietuvišką žodyną". In it, as if in a special instruction, he indicated what the dictionary should be. Valiūnas was delighted that Poška "wants to save the Žemaičių tongue through found". He urged "to remember that Lithuanians and Žemaites would find all the words in that book and understand them" (Valiūnas, 1957: 294—295). Apparently, Valiūnas and other Žemaičių intelligentsia did not like the eastern dialect of Sirvydas, the numerous new-comers. It must be assumed that Poška was well aware of Valiūnas’ letter and he took Valiūnas’ wishes into account. In post-war times, it would have been more relevant to have a bilingual Polish-Lithuanian or even Lithuanian-Polish dictionary than a trilingual one (like Sirvydo’s). However, Poška was unable to move away from Sirvydo trilingual dictionary. It also shows a large * Influence of Sirvydas. Poška, preparing to write a dictionary of Lithuanian language, had a difficulty choosing which Lithuanian dialect to use as the basis for the dictionary. Dealing with the issue, Poška his šį 1824 m. in the April letter To a professor of Vilnius University Ivanui Loboikai (1786—1863) recognized ir his native Viduklė dialect as the best example for the dictionary (Poška : 477—478). Poška divided 216 Lithuanian dialects into three groups according to the pronunciation of the sound combinations la, lé. Nors Poška was big He was a proponent of the middle dialect, but in practice he partially abandoned his opinion, feeling that dialectisms hindered broader communication. therefore in the dictionary, as we will see, he tried as much as possible to harmonize with other dialects. In his dictionary, he provided a lot of lexicon of the Žemaičių mudininkai and other Žemaičių dialects of his time, a little bit of terminology of various fields. In the opinion of Zigmas Zinkevičius, the most important source for him was the native South Samogitian dialect and Lithuanian folklore (Z.Zinkevičius, 1990: 137). In addition to the native dialect, important sources of Poška’s dictionary were ancient and contemporary Lithuanian writings. Poška perhaps mainly used the fifth edition of Sirvydas's dictionary. Poška understood the purpose of his dictionary quite broadly: "For you, brothers, I am writing a dictionary - for the Žemaites and the Lithuanians" (Poška: 109). And he called it not a Samogitian, but a Lithuanian language dictionary – “Slownik języka litewskiego, polskiego i lacinskiego”. Poška also understood the need for Lithuanian grammar, but he preferred Lithuanian vocabulary. He believed that a good vocabulary should grow into grammar (Poška: 329). Let’s see how Poška used Sirvydas’ dictionary to make his work suitable for all Lithuanians. The words and articles taken from Sirvydas' dictionary can be divided into three groups: 1) words and articles with a reference to "Dictionarium"; 2) words and dictionary articles without a reference to the "Dictionarium" source; 3) mixed dictionary articles in which individual words of Sirvydas are used. Articles from the Poškos Dictionary (Poškos Žodininkas — PŽ, below cited in original order. Each article of the dictionary is presented in its entirety with occasional abbreviations. Poška was perhaps encouraged to indicate the sources of the words by the dictionary of Samuel Bogumił Linde (1771—1847- ), from which he took the register of Polish words. Fragments used by Linde (Szyrwid —X. Szyrwida dictionarius Pol. Lat. Lithuanie) Poška did not use, he added new, unequal ones. After the given word Sirvydas in parentheses wrote: Szyrwid or vi. Dictionary, Dictionarz X. Szyrwida, Dictionary of Lit. X. Szyrwid, according to Synon. Szyrwida, Szyrwid in Dictionarium Lit., see Szyrwida- 's Dictionary. He also used the Latin olim before Sirvydas- 's equivalent. Sirvydas' dictionary pages were usually not marked, with the exception of the Lithuanian equivalents of the Polish words filozof, ognik, osoba. The word protameylis Poška distinguished from all the others. Not only the fifth edition, but also the fourth, was referred to. Poška was satisfied with Sirvydo equivalents in the following articles of the dictionary: ‘klamka, kleryk, monstrancya, ognik, pęca, pomarańcza, puszka do Najswigtszego Sakramentu, Rakusy. More often Poška used Sirvydo's equivalents to accelerate with his chosen equivalents, see dla tego, igram, igrzysko, kikut, nabycie, nadprzyrodzony, naložnik, obiadowy, osoba. Poška interpreted the Polish word kikut with the Samogitian adjective kuksas, -a and used Sirvydas' archaism or dialectism sciunklas. Explaining the Polish naložnik, po swelimoteris gave Sirvydas- 's equivalent padriubelis and added the word bambabendris borrowed from the dictionary of Christijon Gotlib Milkas. f Poška provided the borrowed esculus from Sirvydo dictionary together with the Lithuanian iowaras; Sirvydo taszkielis, raszitoiu taszkas presented the two-number form: du taszkielu raszitoju (dwukropka).
