Benennung und Umbenennung von Fließgewässern. Der Fall Schwappach. Ein Nachtrag zum Deutschen Gewässernamenbuch

Abstract

Wann und von wem warum die Fließgewässer so benannt wurden, wie sie jetzt heißen, können wir heute nicht oder nur mit Hilfe etymologischer Hypothesen nachvollziehen und vermuten. Warum wurde z.B. der Rhein zum ersten Mal *Reinos oder die Donau *Dānewjos genannt? Das Problem hängt mit dem hohen Alter der Hydronyme zusammen und hängt davon ab, wie lang bzw. bedeutend ein Fließgewässer ist. Anders ist die Lage, wenn es um die Umbenennung eines Gewässers geht. Wie der im Beitrag beschriebene Fall zeigt, können wir dann genau verfolgen, welche Mitspieler in der Neuzeit an einer Um- oder Neubenennung fördernd oder hinderlich beteiligt sind. Es ist symptomatisch, dass beim Beispielfall aus Bayern der Schwappach benannte Flusslauf relativ kurz, aber ein Zufluss eines großen Flusses, des Mains, ist. Darüber hinaus ist interessant und bezeichnend, dass das Engagement zweier Heimatforscher notwendig war, um eine Umbenennung in Gang zu bringen. Mit ihren Initiativen verbunden sind Fragen der Geographie, Siedlungsgeschichte und Namenüberlieferung. Ferner spielt dabei die Namenetymologie des Hydronyms Schwappach eine wichtige Rolle und wird neu diskutiert.
