1. Towa ds a quali y jou nalism wi h a cul u al pe spec i e
The majo inancial and economic c isis a lic ing he wo ld since 2008 has
le a p o ound ma k on he jou nalism p o ession. This p o ession is cu en -
ly cha ac e ised by, among o he aspec s, an abundance o news, by newswo -
hy ac s and e en s subjec o opicali y and immediacy, by he hyb idisa ion
o gen es and o ma s, echnological con e gence, news dis ibu ed no only
ia adi ional channels bu no ably ia social media pla o ms; and mos de i-
ni ely by he p eca iousness o he wo king condi ions o i s p o essionals, and
he i ialisa ion o he news and he u h. Meanwhile, ecei e s a e less pas-
si e and ha e become c ea o s/p oduce s and p opaga o s (also known as
‘p osume s’) wi hin he online uni e se. Inside his g ea news bubble, jou -
nalism is inc easingly awash wi h ake news, bo s, olls and clickbai .
And ye , in his digi al ecosys em whe e immediacy, speed and b e i y a e
he i al signs o a la ge pa o he jou nalism p o ession, a need has also a is-
en o cul i a e a slow, unhu ied jou nalism which in o ms and analyses
deeply and c ea i ely. We a e alking abou wo k ha is ca ied ou igo ous-
ly, ha e i ies in o ma ion and ea s i s audience wi h espec (Blum i ,
Da id and Köhle , 2010). The need o p ac ise his ype o jou nalism has
been men ioned by au ho s such as Whi wo h (2009), Rosenbe g and Feld-
man (2008), Jun unen (2010), Rauch (2011), B abazon (2013), Ne eu
(2014), Ba anque o-Ca e e o (2013) and Rosique and Ba anque o (2015),
among o he s. I is a jou nalism which akes sides in he old deba e abou
news quali y, al hough “ he e is no ag eemen on wha quali y jou nalism
ac ually means” (Gu ié ez Coba, 2006: 32). E en so, many au ho s ha e

(2010), De Pablos and Ma eos (2004), Deuze (2005), Amado (2007),
Gómez-Mompa , Gu ié ez-Lozano and Palau-Sampio (2013) and Beck,
Reineck and Schube (2010), o name bu a ew.
In ac , his p eoccupa ion wi h igo ous p ac ice wi hin jou nalism is
no hing new. In he 1960s he so-called new jou nalism o li e a y jou nalism
a ose in he USA om he pen o Tom Wol e, in an a mosphe e o social and
cul u al change. Also, in Colombia, Pe u, A gen ina and Mexico a s ong li -
e a y and jou nalis ic cu en was se in mo ion, in which li e a y jou nalism
ook i s i s s eps. This new jou nalism was cul i a ed by young p o essionals
who old s o ies in a li e a y language based on he use o adjec i es and ig-
u es o speech ha appealed o people’s emo ions, and wi h a clea , de ined
s yle. These we e jou nalis ic cu en s ha championed quali y jou nalism.
I is in he digi al con ex , and also in he in e es s o esponding o qual-
i y s anda ds, ha jou nalis ic p ojec s encompassed wi hin he cu en s o
slow jou nalism ha e ( e)a isen wi h conside able o ce. The slow jou nalism
cu en belie es ha he jou nalism o immediacy leads o a loss o quali y
(low jou nalism), as di e en s udies ha e con i med (Gómez-Mompa ,
Gu ié ez-Lozano and Palau-Sampio, 2015; González-Go osa i, 2011;
Ramí ez de la Piscina e al., 2014; 2015).
In oday’s digi al communica i e ecosys em, wi h i s abundance o in o -
ma ion, s anding up o quali y appea s o go agains he idea ha cul u al
p oduc ion has an expi y da e, and agains he agglome a ion o ansmedia
a e ac s designed o become blockbus e s (Mo agas, 2017). Bu digi alisa-
ion has also p o ided new o ms o c ea ion, ci cula ion and cul u al pa ici-
pa ion; he In e ne has also become a gian s o e o p esen and pas con en ,
eely a ailable o use s (Busque , 2017).
2. Cul u al jou nalism and i s impo ance in cu en socie y
This a icle ocuses on slow jou nalism om a cul u al pe spec i e. We a e
alking abou long- o ma jou nalism, wi h a me iculous s yle ha cul i a es
in e p e a ion and opinion gen es, wi h he aim o analysing and unde s and-
ing he cu en social, poli ical and cul u al changes.
The concep o de ini ion o ‘cul u e’ p o okes con lic ing opinions, and
he iews o heo is s, a ising om he di e en b anches o knowledge, may
coincide o may be e y di e en (Busque , 2008 and 2017). One o he
mos ex ensi e in e p e a ions o he e m – and one which mos p obably

do, 2019: 9).

wi hin he ‘ hea ical pa adigm’, and consequen ly, cul u e is no only p o-
duced and consumed in pe son, i s hand bu is also sha ed wi h o he con-
sume s and c ea o s (Busque , 2017).
Despi e he impo ance a ibu ed o i in indi iduals’ and socie ies’ edu-
ca ion and iden i y, cul u e has no adi ionally been gi en he mos no e-
wo hy place in he usual media (appea ing on he las pages in he p ess, and
a he end o TV news bulle ins, i a all). The a i al o he In e ne , p ice

and as Ramí ez de la Piscina (2009) demons a es, i is a necessa y ins u-

3. Resea ch aims and ques ions

media use s o expe ience a new spa ial- empo al pa icipa ion. Wi h e e -
ence o ou objec o s udy, we would ag ee wi h Busque (2017), ha i
a ou s di e se o ms o c ea ion, app op ia ion and cul u al pa icipa ion.
Among o he conside a ions, i should be highligh ed ha his con ex also
allows o he c ea ion o new ela ionships, no only be ween he medium
and i s use s bu among he use s hemsel es. Thus, he exchange o knowl-

A high numbe o ollowe s is he i s challenge, no only o emain in
he digi al media a ena bu also o enable hem o imp o e hei p ojec s,
in e ac wi h each o he , and ac i ely pa icipa e in na a i es wi h cul u al
con en , hus con ibu ing o pe sonal g ow h in a ee and democ a ic com-
muni y. And he ein may also lie he success o hese publica ions.
The main aim o his s udy is o de ine he cha ac e is ic ea u es o he
magazines A cadia (Colombia), Jo Down and Yo okobu (Spain), and Ga o-
pa do (Mexico). The digi al e sions o he ou publica ions we e examined:
he idea being o iden i y such cha ac e is ics as he subjec s hey co e , he
kind o ex s hey include, he eams ha make up hei s a , he esou ces a
hei disposal, he use o new echnology and hei p esence on social media.
To espond o he p oposed aims, we posed he ollowing esea ch ques-
ions:

esea ch?
– RQ2- Wha kinds o companies lie behind he p ojec s?
– RQ3- Wha eams make up he p ojec s?

ce on social media?
4. Me hodology
This s udy o ms pa o a wide p ojec abou quali y slow jou nalism in
Spanish, in which di e en quali a i e and quan i a i e me hods we e used.
The esea ch eam iden i ied en websi es ha p ac ise slow jou nalism in
Spanish: 5W, Con ex o, Jo Down, Panenka and Yo okobu (all om Spain),
Ga opa do and Le as Lib es (bo h om Mexico), A cadia and La Silla Vacía
(Colombia) and An ibia (A gen ina).
Rega ding he case ha conce ns us he e, in he i s phase a quali a i e
me hodology was used, based mainly on case s udies and in-dep h in e iews.

5. Resul s
The ou magazines s udied de ine hemsel es as cul u al magazines o ones
wi h eminen ly cul u al con en . They a e all published in Spanish and p ac-
ise slow jou nalism.
Published in Colombia, A cadia was ounded in 2005 as a cul u al sup-
plemen o he magazine Semana, al hough oday i is an independen publi-
ca ion. I was an eminen ly li e a y magazine bu in 2016 i began app oach-
ing cul u e mo e globally and s a ed o pu sue new eade ship. This
coincided wi h he peace p ocess1, an ex emely impo an ime o Colombi-
an socie y which was el wi hin he cul u al sphe e.
Jo Down was bo n in 2011 h ough he In e ne o um Ae ópago, which

jou nalis ic c isis, by ou people om he mains eam media looking o c e-
a e some hing which would ul il hem p o essionally, whils o e ing eade s
a new p oduc which did no exis on he ma ke a ha ime.
Ga opa do is a publica ion wi h eade ship in many La in Ame ican coun-
ies, al hough i s cu en headqua e s a e in Mexico. I came in o being in
he yea 2000 in Colombia, as pa o he Media g oup Publicaciones Semana.
A ound 2002-2003, he magazine se ou o ind i s own s a egic pa ne s,
ini ially wi h a small A gen ine g oup, bu abo e all o ming a solid alliance
wi h T a esías in 2006. The magazine is commi ed o na a i e con en ,
hinking beyond he immediacy o he jou nalis ic agenda.

o he Semana g oup. The s a o A cadia i sel is made up o ou people:
Di ec o (Camilo Jiménez), Comme cial Di ec o (Ma cela Cha e ía), Edi-
o (Sa a Malagón) and Digi al Edi o (Felipe Sánchez). In addi ion, hey
hi e a paid ainee on a six-mon hly basis. Mos o i s con en is c ea ed by

Among he ounding membe s o Jo Down a e Ca les A. Fogue , Rica do
J. González, Ángel Luis Fe nández and Ma ía Jesús Ma huenda (none o
whom ha e quali ica ions in Jou nalism). The la e wo ha e a 50% s ake in
he pa ne ship WabiSabi In es men s, which p oduces he websi e and pub-
lishes p in ed magazines and books connec ed o he same b and.
Ma ía Jesús Ma huenda, also known as Ma de Ma chis, is he Di ec o o
Jo Down. By he middle o 2018, Jo Down had 14 people on i s s a (9 ull
ime and 5 pa ime), ca ying ou he ollowing du ies: managemen , edi -
ing, adminis a ion, communica ion, dis ibu ion, design, con en , p omo-
ion and con ibu o liaison, among many o he s. Acco ding o i s edi o ,
hei sala ies a e simila . In addi ion o he s a , Jo Down has a ound a hun-
d ed egula con ibu o s, which has become one o he magazine’s hallma ks.
Yo okobu is a publica ion di ec ed by Juanjo Mo eno, oge he wi h Ma
Abad, Ma cus Hu s , and Fe mín Abella. They a e he ou ounde s o he
magazine and also he manage s o B and & Roses, a company whose con-
en , among o he s, is published by he magazine Yo okobu. I is a Limi ed
Company (SL) wi h i s headqua e s in Mad id, al hough i does no ha e i s
own news o ice as such. The company has g own s eadily o e he yea s, and
by he end o 2018 had a s a o 21 people. They also ha e an ex ensi e “ al-
en ne wo k”, as hei ounde s like o call hem, some o whom a e egula
con ibu o s whils o he s wo k mo e spo adically.

he Edi o ial Coo dina o is Guille mo Sánchez Ce an es.

y. (…) I is abou seeing cul u al subjec s in social and poli ical e ms”, says
i s edi o Sa a Malagón.
The p in e sion is subjec o a e y ca e ul publishing p ocess, simila o
ha o a book in e ms o s o age. The digi al e sion is s ill being pe ec ed
– he e a e s ill no able di e ences in e ms o esou ces and he unequal
a en ion gi en o i compa ed wi h he p in edi ion. Since Felipe Sánchez
was appoin ed di ec o in 2018, he aim has been o e hink he ela ionship
be ween he online and p in e sions, so ha he online edi ion ceases o be
mo e o a dis ibu ion channel and becomes a dis inc i e medium wi h i s
own cha ac e . Ano he aim is o make he mos o digi al ools and esou ces
o p ac ise a di e en ype o cul u al jou nalism ha p omo es a is ic c e-
a ion and p oduc ion.
Jo Down was bo n b eaking e e y online ule ha un il hen had seemed
un ouchable, such as he ollowing: online ex s mus be b ie , ligh and easily
diges ible. Well, he pieces in his magazine a e usually long – e y long. They
a e a emo ed om he con en o he ex s in he p in ed p ess whose
leng h has g adually been educed, and also om ha which p edomina es in
he usual online dailies. The ex s in his magazine lee om he cu en se -
i ude. They o en use li e a y na a i e echniques, bu wi hou c ossing
in o ic ion (excep in e o ic s o ies). They ha e ound hei own niche in he
ma ke , h ough a di e en way o elling s o ies ha eaches di e se people
