First record of Tanycypris alfonsi Nagler et al., 2014 (Crustacea, Ostracoda) from India

Abstract

The freshwater ostracod Tanycypris alfonsi Nagler et al., 2014, was originally described from Germany, where it was considered an alien species. We report the first confirmed occurrence of T. alfonsi Nagler et al., 2014 in India, where it was found in a natural habitat, which indicates that India lies within its native geographic range.

INTRODUCTION
The sub amily Cyp ice cinae is one o he di e se sub amilies o he amily Cyp ididae, which belongs o he
class Os acoda (subphylum C us acea), cu en ly comp ises 172 species wo ldwide (Meisch e al. 2024). This
sub amily o os acod has a dis inc se o diagnos ic cha ac e s o iden i ica ion, which we e e ised by
Sa a enalin on and Ma ens (2009). The leading cha ac e is ic o iden i ying he sub amily is he p esence
and posi ion o T iebel’s loop on he caudal amus a achmen . Cu en ly, he genus Tanycyp is T iebel, 1959
is classi ied wi hin he ibe Nealecyp idini (Sa a enalin on and Ma ens 2009) and comp ises six species—T.
al onsi Nagle , Geis & Ma zke‑Ka asz, 2014, T. cen a Chang, Lee & Smi h, 2012, T. eugenkemp i Sa a enalin on,
2017, T. madagasca ensis (Mülle , 1898), T. gonia Smi h & Ozawa, 2024, T. pellucida (Klie, 1932), T. siamensis Sa‑
a enalin on & Ma ens, 2009—and one in aspeci ic axon, Tanycyp is pellucida a . saloica (Aka o a, 1950);
hese a e dis ibu ed ac oss h ee zoogeog aphical egions: A o opical, O ien al, and Palaea c ic (Meisch
e al. 2024; Smi h e al. 2024).
Tanycyp is al onsi was disco e ed by Nagle e al. (2014) in he g eenhouse o he bo anical ga den in Mu‑
nich, Ge many. Since hen, his species has been epo ed om only h ee loca ions, in Sou h Ko ea (Smi h
e al. 2014), eas e n China (Ma and Yu 2018), and Japan (Smi h 2023). We epo he i s con i med occu ence
o T. al onsi in India, whe e i was ound in a na u al habi a , which indica es ha India lies wi hin i s na i e
geog aphic ange.
METHODS
Samples we e collec ed om a pool nea he Tapi Ri e in he Jalgaon Dis ic o Maha ash a, India
(21°05′17.9″N, 075°58′34.1″E). Samples we e collec ed using a simple hand ne wi h a mesh size o 150 µm,
placed in 100 ml con aine s, and p ese ed in 4% o maldehyde solu ion. In he labo a o y, he samples
we e insed unde ap wa e and p ese ed in 70% alcohol. The specimens we e isola ed, hei al es sep‑
a a ed, and dissec ion was pe o med using ungs en needles unde a s e eomic oscope (Magnus MS24).
The sepa a ed al es we e moun ed on a s ub o examina ion using a scanning elec on mic oscope (JEOL
Analy ical Scanning Elec on Mic oscope). The dissec ed so pa s we e moun ed in poly inyl lac ophenol
and illus a ed using a came a lucida a ached o a Law ence and Mayo LM‑52‑1802 mic oscope. These
d awings we e digi ized using Inkscape . 1.3.2. Images we e p ocessed using GIMP . 3.0.4. A dis ibu ion
map was c ea ed using QGIS . 3.22.6 (QGIS 2022).

Desc ip ion. The ca apace (Figu e 1A–C) is 1280–1320 µm long, and 600–620 µm high. The ca apace is
yellow, and he eye is p ominen . The su ace o he al es bea spa sely dis ibu ed hai s and a oo ‑ ile‑like
s uc u e a he pos e io end (Figu e 1A). The ca apace is elonga e in he la e al iew, hin in he do sal iew,
and has he g ea es wid h a he middle. The ends o he al es a e ounded, he do sal ma gin is s aigh ,
and he en al ma gin is sligh ly conca e in on o he middle. The LV and RV ha e b oad inne lamellae a
he an e io and pos e io ends, wi hou an inne lis . A g oo e is p esen along he an e o en al ma gin in
he LV (Figu e 1B), whe eas he RV lacks a g oo e (Figu e 1B). The inne ma gins o bo h al es a e ounded
a he an e io end bu sligh ly cu ed a he pos e o en al end.

segmen . The se en h segmen has wo long se ae, one senso y se a ya, and one sho accompanying se a.

segmen has a long e se a. The second segmen medially bea s se ae ( eaching he dis al end o he e mi‑
nal segmen ). The e minal segmen bea s an apical pince h2, a sho h1 se a, and a subapical h3 se a. The
CR (Figu e 3E) was symme ical wi h s ongly se a ed Ga and Gp claws. The Sa se a is smoo h and ex ends
beyond he mid‑leng h o he claw Ga. Se a Sa is longe han claw Gp. Sp se a is sho and sligh ly se a ed.
The en al ma gin is se a ed along almos i s en i e leng h.
CR a achmen (Figu e 3F): he ibbles loop is a he middle, he do sal b anch is hin, elonga e, and ben
a he dis al end, and he en al b anch is wide, s ubby, and ounded.
Taxonomic ema ks. Ou Indian specimens esemble T. al onsi as o iginally desc ibed, bu hey also
show signi ican mo phological di e ences in he shape o he ca apace, A1, and CR. The in e sec ion o
pos e o‑do sal ma gin in Ge man specimens is sligh ly dep essed while in Indian specimens his ma gin
is smoo hly cu ed. E en he shape o he inne ma gin is di e en in bo h popula ions. In he o iginal
desc ip ion o he species (Nagle e al. 2014), he Wou e s o gan was no ed as being ela i ely small and
inconspicuous. In con as , ou Indian specimens ha e a ma kedly elonga e Wou e s o gan, app oxima ely
he same leng h as he Rome o gan. Addi ionally, he do sal se a o ou specimens is conside ably longe . I
a ises p oximally a he base o he Wou e s o gan, in con as o he o iginal desc ip ion in which his se a
is sho and subapical. Fu he mo e, he Sp se a on he CR in Ge man specimens is slende and smoo h,
whe eas in Indian and Chinese specimens (Ma and Yu 2018), i has a b oade base and a b ush‑like dis al end.
DISCUSSION
The genus Tanycyp is is known om h ee zoogeog aphical egions. Tanycyp is al onsi was o iginally de‑
sc ibed om Ge many, whe e i is conside ed an alien species (Nagle e al. 2014), and i has since been
epo ed om small bodies o wa e bodies on Jeju Island, Sou h Ko ea (Smi h e al. 2014), in eas e n China
(Ma and Yu 2018), and in he O ien al pa o he Nansei Islands, Japan (Smi h 2023). He e, we epo T. al onsi
o he i s ime om India, whe e i was ound in a i e ine ecosys em. This species was p e iously known

We hypo hesise ha T. al onsi is possibly an Eas Asian species which has been in oduced o Ge many,
o ha he Indian popula ion (ou eco d iden i ied as T. al onsi) may ep esen a dis inc , undesc ibed spe‑
cies. Gene ic analysis o hese popula ions would sol e he axonomic unce ain y. Un il molecula da a a e
a ailable, we p o isionally e e o he Indian specimens as T. al onsi. Un il now, o he genus Tanycyp is, only
T. pellucida has been epo ed om India (Ha shey and Sh i as a 1983). A epo o T. pellucida by Shinde
(2012) was e‑examined and i s iden i ica ion is co ec ed he e as T. al onsi.
