The idea o an exhibi on clima e

Fo housands o yea s, Inui ha e used sea ice, an
in eg al pa o he a c ic ma ine ecosys em, as a hun ing
pla o m and a highway. Employing Inui echniques,
explo e s such as Robe E. Pea y a eled wi h dog-
d awn sleds o e he sea ice o he A c ic Ocean in hopes
o eaching he No h Pole. On his 1906 and 1908
expedi ions, Pea y, his c ews, and Inui companions
e ied dogs, men, and supplies ac oss nume ous leads—
c acks ha open in he ice—using blocks o ice as ba ges.

how clima e change has a ec ed human
socie ies and demons a e how paleo-
clima ic esea ch, a chaeology, his o y, and

change. Thomas McGo e n (Ci y Uni e -

The gene al ci cula ion o he global
mesosphe e is cha ac e ized by upwa d
winds in he summe hemisphe e ha
cycle la i udinally o downwa d winds in
he win e hemisphe e. The expansion o
gases caused by he upwa d winds esul s
in summe empe a u es a high la i udes
in he uppe mesosphe e ha a e ypically
below 140 K (-133°C). NLC o m as
mesosphe ic wa e apo eezes on con-
densa ion nuclei in his pool o ex eme
cold as i sp eads om he “summe ” pole
o 50° la i ude by la e May and e ac s
again by la e Augus . The na u e o he
nuclei is an ac i e esea ch opic; he mos
likely candida es a e me eo ic dus pa -
icles and p o on hyd a e ions. The adius
o a cloud pa icle is ypically less han

Connec ions o Global Change

speaking, each me hane molecule leads
o wo wa e molecules. The wo- old
inc ease in me hane concen a ions o e

explain he inc ease in NLC obse a ions.

in 1885—only 117 yea s ago, a ela i ely
