The Pola “Ozone Holes”
In 1985, a eam o B i ish in es iga o s
epo ed unusually low ozone le els o e
An a c ica. Resea ch in o he cause o he
“ozone hole” implica ed haloca bons
gene a ed by human ac i i ies, pa icula ly
chlo o luo oca bons (CFCs), in ozone
deple ion. The e ec s o CFCs ha e been
concen a ed abo e An a c ica, whe e
pola s a osphe ic clouds (PSCs, see page
14) p o ide su aces on which benign
o ms o chlo ine a e con e ed in o
eac i e o ms. These eac i e o ms o
chlo ine hen apidly des oy ozone in he
p esence o sunligh . In he An a c ic, he
e y cold condi ions ha allow PSCs o
o m pe sis h ough win e in o sp ing,
main aining high le els o he eac i e
chlo ine compounds as sunligh e u ns o
he egion. In addi ion, PSCs emo e
ni ic acid and o he ni ogenous com-
pounds om he s a osphe e ha would
o he wise mode a e ozone deple ion by
eac i e chlo ine compounds.
Because he s a osphe e o e he A c-
ic isn’ as cold as i is o e he An a c ic,
he o ma ion o PSCs is mo e limi ed,

III Ozone Loss and Valida ion Expe imen
(SOLVE) and he E.U.-sponso ed Thi d
Eu opean S a osphe ic Expe imen on
Ozone (THESEO) made mos o he

ma ely 60% be ween Janua y and mid-

may be ela ed o he e ec s o g eenhouse
gas emissions (e.g., ca bon dioxide, me h-
ane, ni ous oxide). Al hough accumula-
ion o hese gases low in he a mosphe e

lowe s empe a u es and he e o e
enhances o ma ion o PSCs.

While s a osphe ic ozone luc ua ions
a e now closely moni o ed, mesoscale luc-
ua ions in UV adia ion a he su ace a e
less well unde s ood. Accu a ely es ima ing
a ia ions in UV i adiance a he su ace
is pa icula ly challenging in he A c ic,
whe e UV le els a e cu en ly being
moni o ed a app oxima ely 20 loca ions.
How much UV eaches he su ace is
con olled by he amoun o ozone in he
a mosphe e o e head, p ima ily in he
s a osphe e and o a lesse ex en in he
oposphe e. A he low sun angles ypical
o high la i udes, sunligh a e ses an
ex ended pa h h ough he oposphe e.
UV i adiance also a ies wi h local me eo-
ological and su ace physical condi ions
including cloud co e , ae osol ex inc ion,

known e ec s on humans (e.g., sunbu n,
snowblindness, immune supp ession).

show ha UV adia ion enhances he ox-
ici y o ce ain chemical compounds, pa -
icula ly hose associa ed wi h oil spills o
pe oleum con amina ion. “Pho o-
enhanced oxici y” can se iously inju e
o kill sensi i e species. Resul s show, o
ins ance, ha 100% o shell ish emb yos
ha we e exposed o h ee-day-old spill
