Abs ac . The Neo opical genus Ruppeliana Young, 1977 comp ises 13 species. The ollowing h ee
a e edesc ibed and illus a ed he ein: R. co ona a (Signo e , 1853), R. ul a (Taschenbe g, 1884), and
R. nig ipes (Signo e , 1853). Addi ionally, h ee new species a e desc ibed and illus a ed: R. delica a
sp. no ., R. obus a sp. no ., and R. iden a a sp. no ., om he s a es o Pa aná, San a Ca a ina, and
Rio de Janei o, espec i ely. A e ised diagnosis, a key o males, a dis ibu ion map, and a neo ype
designa ion o R. g ossii Ca ichioli e al., 2017 a e also p oposed.

Ruppeliana was es ablished by Young (1977) o accommoda e Te igonia signiceps S ål, 1862, along
wi h he ollowing species: Te igonia co ona a Signo e , 1853; T. co onuli e a S ål, 1862; T. episcopalis
Signo e , 1853; T. ul a Taschenbe g, 1884; T. glaucomacula a Ge ma , 1821; T. nig ipes Signo e , 1853;
and T. aschenbe gi Be g, 1899. Addi ionally, Young desc ibed a new species, R. a ia. Recen s udies
ha e desc ibed six new species: R. caelimacula a and R. la i i escens (Ca alho e al. 2014), as well
as R. ba ba ensis, R. g ossii, R. longiphallus, and R. se ana (Ca ichioli e al. 2017). Fu he mo e,
R. co onuli e a and R. aschenbe gi we e synonymized wi h R. signiceps (S ål, 1862) (Ca alho e al.
2014). A he p esen momen , Ruppeliana comp ises 13 species. Al hough he o iginal genus desc ip ion
included eco ds om sou he n B azil and no he n A gen ina, he A gen inian eco d could no be
con i medinsubsequen s udies(Ca ichiolie al. 2017).
Ruppeliana was placed nea Pawiloma Young, 1977 due o simila i ies in bo h male and emale geni alia
(Young 1977). Howe e , hey di e in he o me ha ing elonga ed basal p ocesses o he aedeagus
(Ca alho e al. 2014). Rep esen a i es o Ruppeliana a e colo ul and obus , measu ing app oxima ely

10 millime e s, bu hey a e no commonly ound in collec ions (Ca ichioli e al. 2017). This a i y likely
explains why Young (1977) did no p opose a dicho omous key o he genus.
The o iginal desc ip ions o R. co ona a, R. episcopalis, R. ul a, R. glaucomacula a, R. nig ipes, and
R. signiceps a e b ie and p ima ily ocused on ex e nal mo phology. Mos o hese species we e la e
edesc ibed and illus a ed by Young (1977), excep o R. nig ipes and R. co ona a, o which he au ho
sugges ed a possible synonymy. The illus a ions o R. co ona a we e based on a non- ype se ies male,
while o R. nig ipes, Young (1977) p o ided only a la e al iew o he pygo e and a en al iew o
he aedeagus.
Due o he absence o de ailed mo phological desc ip ions and illus a ions in p e ious s udies, we
edesc ibed and illus a ed he species R. co ona a, R. nig ipes, and R. ul a, desc ibing he colo
a ia ion o he la e . Addi ionally, we desc ibe h ee new species: R. delica a sp. no ., R. iden a a
sp. no ., and R. obus a sp. no . We also p o ide a key o he males o he genus, an occu ence map and
a neo ype designa ion o R. g ossii.
Ma e ial and me hods
The e minology adop ed he e ollows Young (1977) o he main e ms, Hamil on (1981) and Mejdalani
(1993, 1998) o acial a eas o he head, and Nielson (1965) o emale geni alia. The e ms “gonoplac”
and“sculp eda easo  i s o iposi o  al ule” ollowMejdalani(1998).The echniques o geni alia
p epa a ion ollowCa ichioli&Takiya(2012),wi hmodi ica ionsasinDomaho ski(2024).The
dissec ed pa s we e s o ed in mic o ials wi h glyce in, as sugges ed by Young & Bei ne (1958).

The specimens examined a e deposi ed in he Coleção En omológica Pad e Jesus San iago Mou e,
Depa amen o de Zoologia, Uni e sidade Fede al do Pa aná, Cu i iba, B azil (DZUP), and in Museu
Nacional do Rio de Janei o (MNRJ).
The occu ence map was gene a ed using Simple Mapp (a ailable online a h ps://www.simplemapp .ne /),
wi h da a ob ained om he li e a u e (Young 1977; McKamey 2007; F oza e al. 2024; and o iginal
desc ip ions), om he online sou ce Taxonomic Ca alogue o B azilian Fauna (Takiya e al. 2024), and
om specimen labels deposi ed a DZUP.

Diagnosis
La ge sha pshoo e s, abou 10 mm leng h (Fig. 1A–B). O e all body colo a ion yellow, wi h a ho seshoe
shaped macula in ons (Fig. 1A–C). Fo ewings eddish, wi h yellowish o whi ish longi udinal s aps
(Fig. 1A–B). Male pygo e in do sal iew wi h apices di ec ed inwa ds (Fig. 15A). Subgeni al pla e in
la e al iew a aining pygo e ’s apex (Fig. 1D). S yle e y long wi h mic ose ae in ou e ma gin and apex

Howe e , hey can be dis inguished by se e al mo phological cha ac e is ics. The o ewing colo a ion
is eddish a R. co ona a and b own in R. nig ipes. In do sal iew, he pygo e apices a e di ec ed
inwa ds in R. co ona a (Fig. 15A), whe eas hey a e subpa allel in R. nig ipes (Fig. 15B). Addi ionally,
he subgeni al pla e eaches o su passes pygo e apex in R. co ona a, while in R. nig ipes, i does no
ex end beyond pygo e apical po ion.
