d ama is Thomas Lanie Williams, whose s age
name was Tennessee Williams (1911–1983). Mos
o he ac ion in he play akes place du ing he

1930s. The Uni ed S a es, along wi h he es o
he globe, was on he b ink o Wo ld Wa II
(1939–1945), a con lic ha had de as a ed
na ions e e ywhe e and le hem sca ed and
b u al.Du ing his ime, Williams was also dealing
wi h his own pe sonal s uggles, s emming om
he eali y ha he endu ed a mise able exis ence
ha inspi ed many o his plays. A c uel wande ing

explo es he a e e ec s o WWII by looking a he s esses and wo ies ha
cha ac e ized ha e a. The d ama ollows a sou he n amily as hey despe a ely y o
escape eali y once hei an asies a e c ushed. Williams' de use o symbols gi es he
wo k dep h and allows o many eadings. Williams makes use o he glass menage ie
o symbolize he b oken li es o Amanda, Lau a, and Tom Wing ield, and hei inabili y
o unc ion in he mode n wo ld. The amily's o e whelming wan o hold on o hei
pas and conque hei d ead o being alone a e symbolized by he glass

on, some choose o disengage om he wo ld as i

psychologically (Bhawa ,2020).

Williams and hei igh o be acknowledged and
accep ed by hose a ound hem. Depending on
hei mo i a ion and esou ces, his cha ac e s'
s uggles will ake di e en shapes and mani es
in di e en ways. Fo ins ance, in The Glass
Menage ie, we come upon Tom, who is a pa o
he Wing ield amily, is an example o someone
who can ope a e in he eal wo ld; he has a job
and alks o andom people. Tom escapes in o his
imagina ion when he has o deal wi h he
mono ony o his wo k in a ac o y and he mise y
o going home o a mom who doesn' ca e abou
him o his wan s. His li elong goals include being
an acclaimed poe and en e ing he me chan
ma ines. Tom goes o he cinema and ge s d unk

and home own o wha he pe cei es as a genuine
"escape," as he lacks any mo e d i e han Lau a o
pu sue ca ee success, lo e connec ions, o e en
casual acquain ances. I doesn' ma e how a
Tom goes om home; his hough s will always
e u n o his mo he and sis e . He po ays
himsel as an ad en u ous and c ea i e young guy,
bu deep down he is a esen ul and u ious son
who blames himsel o his a he 's abandonmen
o he amily. The eali y is ha he is eage o

As Williams imme ses us in he daily

Wing ields, he unco e s u he illusions and
demons a es how hey espond o and exploi
hem. Amanda, Tom's mom, holds on o a ew
illusions so she may escape he eali y o he
amily's cu en and likely u u e si ua ion. She
holds dea he memo ies o ha ing "was p esen ed
wi h se en een gen lemen calle s" on a Sunday
a e noon—any one o whom she could ha e
ma ied—and is ce ain ha he you h ul
cha isma om he days in he Blue Moun ains is
s ill wi h he . Tha he o sp ing a e " ied o be
success ul" because hey a e "jus ull o di ine
gi s" is he belie . Tom is ac ually con empla ing
becoming a me chan sailo despi e his deep-
sea ed desi e o pu sue a ca ee in li e a u e; he is
also on he e ge o losing his job a he ac o y.
Tom's nanny, Lau a, has a se e e case o shyness,
is c ippled wi h lameness, and appea s o ca e
p ima ily abou he possessions o glass animals
and in age phonog aph eco ds. So eminiscen
o Amanda's holding belie ha Lau a may be
happy and p ospe ous i she only lea ns how o
ype and goes o business school(Mai i,2018).

Amanda pe suade he sel ha he young man Tom
in i ed o dinne ,( Jim O'Conno ) a gen lemen
calle , is an excep ional sui o o Lau a. She
hinks she can win o e Lau a's gen leman calle
and win his hea by making he look lo ely and
appealing, epu posing an old cos ume o pu on
he sel , polishing he h ee pieces o wedding
sil e ha a e s ill in he possession, eco e ing
he u ni u e, pu chasing a new lamp, and ac ing
ou he pa o a cha ming, young Sou he n
ma on. The u h is ha Jim O'Conno is jus a
egula guy whose glo y days in high school a e
beginning o ade om memo y. He isn'
enamo ed wi h Lau a as a sui o , bu mo e as a
b o he who eels bad o his sis e . Plus, Jim's
engagemen sha e s Amanda's delusion he
momen he makes he announcemen (Mai i,2018).
Jim O'Conno , like Amanda, has delusions; in
his case, he becomes an image o Lau a's
edemp ion. In o de o ha e ai h in a p ospe ous
and joy ul u u e, he has made hem. Jim knows he
has allen sho o his high school classma es'
expec a ions, bu he is de e mined o make up o
i . A ending a cou se on speaking in public o
imp o e his "social poise" has gi en him he
con idence o pu sue an execu i e ole, despi e his
lack o expe ience in he ield. Addi ionally, he
hinks ha i he en olls in a adio echnical
p og am, he may "ge in on he g ound loo " o
he ele ision sec o and quickly climb he
co po a e ladde . Jim is able o conju e up his
illusions because o his bouncy sel -con idence,
inna e genuineness, and childish insensi i i y o
many o he hings happening a ound him. While
his many blanke s a emen s abou li e, himsel ,
and o he s se e o shield him om ha m, hey
may p o e o be inadequa e in he long
un(Single,1999).

Tennessee Williams demons a es. The eadiness

illusion by claiming ha unico ns a e kind o
ho nless ho ses, lo e he ligh , and may eel lonely
since hey a e di e en om o he animals, bu
hey don' moan o whine abou i . Addi ionally,
she men ions ha he glass c ea u es would
a he go o he mo ies o Jewel-box, "whe e hey
aise he opical lowe s," han a end he
business college lessons. In o de o make he
unico n eel less s ange, Lau a plans o assume
ha i had a "ope a ion" when i alls om he
able and loses i s ho n. Simila ly, Lau a seems o
eel less " eakish" du ing he b ie encoun e s
wi h Jim, when hey con e se, dance, and
kiss(Veliaj.2015).

ha m. She has a ce ain b i leness and agili y,
like glass, and is jus as likely o b eak i no
handled wi h ca e; ye , she is as beau i ul and has
an in e io ligh ha a ies in hue( Roge ,1992).

Amanda denies wha e e she inds unaccep able
as she ies o li e ou he pas ia Lau a. She
wan s social and inancial success and is pa ial o
eal-wo ld ideals, unlike he child en, ye she can'
see many eali ies because o he connec ion o
hese alues. She e uses o belie e ha she
should no longe be he spoiled b a she once was,
ha Lau a is s ange, ha Tom will ne e be he
success ul businessman she d eams o , o ha she
may sha e some o he child en's pain and
sho comings (Tennessee,1945).
Amanda's de achmen om eali y, a he

no excused since his escape an asies, mo ie
ma a hons, and inal decision o abandon his
amily in pu sui o an una ainable "happiness" all

indulge in sel -decep ion as a means o escaping
he mise y o being human(Bhawa ,2020).
2. Conclusion

Wing ield's long-ago abandonmen , he en i e
amily has become de ea is . Tom ollows in his
a he 's oo s eps by lea ing he amily o wha he
belie es would be bes o himsel , much like his
a he did. Almos no hing can he do. He pays his
dues o become a membe o he Me chan
Seaman's Union a he han he ligh bill, as is his
legal obliga ion. Lau a is pa alyzed and
emo ionally dis an . Because he amily is poo ,
Amanda has no choice bu o sell women's
unde wea and magazine subsc ip ions o make
ends mee .
The play's mood is se in s one by he in e play o
social, physical, and psychological o ces; hese
o ces push he cha ac e s o ail no ma e how
ha d hey y o i in wi h socie y and iumph
o e li e's challenges. The mo e hey wan o
escape hei p oblems, he mo e di e hei
