e ie ing, edi ing, alida ing o con e ing da a, collec ing da a in he ield, ou ing, geose ices,
e c. These p og ams a e inc easingly p esen in he daily li es o OSM use s, especially in
coun ies ou side he US-Eu ope axis (such as La in Ame ica and A ica), whe e new use s a e
becoming in e es ed in OSM and he applica ions, which is e lec ed in he signi ican inc ease in
he numbe o con ibu ions on he map. This esea ch aims o su ey he publica ion p o ile o he
weeklyOSM [1], analyzing he con en o he issues published on he las en yea s (numbe s 272
o 768), since i began o be o ganized wi h he OpenS ee Map Blog Collec o [2], a sys em wi h
ee and open sou ce code, designed, p og ammed and imp o ed by TheFi e [3] and which has
been used o manage he con en o he weeklyOSM since i s numbe 272, in Sep embe 2015.
The weeklyOSM epo s news om he epo ing week, is p oduced by mappe s and OSM
en husias s and is independen om o ganiza ions and companies [4]. I co e s cu en ly 15
languages and has been in o ming he OSM use communi y wi hou ail since i s elease as he
Ge man weekly OSM-Wochenno iz [5], whose ini ial issue was published on July 23, 2010. I s
wo k low na u ally a o s sampling OSM- ela ed opics om a wide a ie y o sou ces, such as
social ne wo ks, blogs, OpenS ee Map Founda ion channels o ins i u ional news si es. Thus, by
analyzing hei con en , i is hoped ha he esul s will se e as a p oxy o unde s anding he
in e es in ce ain ca ego ies and he usage o ce ain so wa e by OSM use s. The me hodological
low s a ed wi h he ini ial expo o he a icles s o ed in he OSM Blog Collec o (OSMBC), in a
ile in he comma-sepa a ed alues (.CSV) o ma . The eco ds we e hen impo ed in o a
Pos g eSQL da abase and analyzed using S uc u ed Que y Language (SQL). O he ini ial 32,261
eco ds (a icles) and 35 ca ego ies, he eco ds p io o numbe 272 we e excluded and he
ca ego ies we e s anda dized o con o m o he ac ual weeklyOSM's ca ego ies: Abou us,
B eaking news, Communi y, Did you know ha ..., Educa ion, E en s, Humani a ian OSM, Impo s,
Licenses, Local chap e news, Mapping, Mapping campaigns, Maps, Open Da a, OpenS ee Map

P og amming, Releases, So wa e, Upcoming E en s. Thus, a e he ini ial p ocessing, 18,672
eco ds (a icles) we e ob ained, classi ied in o he cu en 24 ca ego ies and conside ed as he
ini ial se o he analysis. In a second s age, que ies we e made ega ding he occu ence o 102
so wa e in he a icles (e.g. “Pano amax”), sa ing he esul s iles in .CSV o ma and making hem
a ailable on Gi Hub [6], wi h i s subsequen classi ica ion in o 14 so wa e g oups: 3D model, ae ial
image y, API, con e e , da a ex ac ion, da a quali y, desk op edi o , lib a y, mobile edi o , no es
edi o , OSM based se ice, ou ing, s ee le el image y, agging, and e-impo ing hem in o he
da abase in a new able, o ming a second se o eco ds. Making he da a and esul s a ailable on
Gi Hub gua an ees he anspa ency and ep oducibili y o he analysis. The sea ch o so wa e
and he design o he ca ego ies we e inspi ed by he sou ces [7-11]. F om he s a ing se o he
analysis, he ini ial and inal numbe s o he ca ego y (e.g. “Mapping”) we e collec ed, and he o al
numbe o a icles in he ca ego y was calcula ed, esul ing in a anking showing he mos popula
ca ego ies o publishing a icles. F om he second se (only he eco ds o he 102 selec ed
so wa e), he so wa e's indices we e calcula ed, which co espond o he so wa e's pa icipa ion
in he g oup o which i belongs. The esul s ound in he i s s age o he analysis show ha he
en mos popula weeklyOSM ca ego ies o associa e wi h a icles we e: “Mapping” (2,778 a icles),
“O he geo hings” (2,331), "Communi y" (2,212), “Did you know ha ...” (1,177), “E en s” (1,153),

“OpenS ee Map Founda ion” (782); and he ull anking can be accessed on he Gi Hub [12]. In
he second s age o he analysis, wi h he se o da a which con ains only he eco ds o a icles
