Equal-Li e s udies he impac on child en’s men al heal h and cogni i e de elopmen by he ex e nal
exposome. This ex e nal exposome comp ises o he physical exposome (such as aspec s o he buil
en i onmen and en i onmen al quali y) and he social exposome (such as socie al con ex ,
socioeconomic, social and psychosocial con ex s).
The o e a ching aim o he Equal-Li e p ojec is o de elop e idence-based guidance o policy-make s
and decision-make s, pa icula ly a he local go e nmen le el, and o p o essionals wo king in
a ious domains in which he physical and social exposome, speci ically o child en, a e add essed.
These s akeholde s a e c ucial in implemen ing Equal-Li e esul s and in imp o ing child en’s men al
heal h and cogni i e de elopmen as well in add essing (heal h) inequali ies. The guidance om
Equal-Li e will acili a e hem in he iden i ica ion and design o in e en ion s a egies and p e en i e
measu es, ocused on he isk ac o s o men al heal h and he cogni i e- and socio-emo ional
de elopmen o child en. E idence-based policies and p og ammes can ackle ad e se en i onmen s
and c ea e es o a i e ones, imp o ing men al heal h and educing he o e all bu den o disease.
Science-policy in e ace
Since he las decade we wi ness inc eased a en ion and call o in e ac ion be ween he scien i ic
ield and ‘p ac ice’ in o de o imp o e impac o bo h ‘domains’. In (policy) science li e a u e his is
abundan ly desc ibed using he concep o amewo k o ‘policy-science in e ace’. Some (academic)
no es on policy science in e ace and s akeholde (analysis) a e speci ically on:

Why? We iden i ied po en ial s akeholde s du ing he p epa a o y wo k o he p ojec p oposal on
child en’s men al heal h and cogni i e de elopmen . These include expe s, policy make s, non-
go e nmen al o ganisa ions (NGOs) and esea ch g oups, who gene a e impo an and ele an
knowledge om diffe en pe spec i es. We hink ha i would be in e es ing o engage hese
s akeholde s in iden i ying speci ic needs in add essing hese heal h inequali ies. These needs conce n
awa eness, knowledge, da a, ins umen s and o he gaps encoun e ed in add essing men al heal h
and cogni i e de elopmen o child en, in i s b oades sense. To ackle hese needs we equi e a
knowledge base necessa y o decision and policy-make s and p o essionals wo king in domains ha
add ess he social and physical exposome. Because he in e es s, abili ies, in luence and impac o
s akeholde s a y g ea ly, we need o accoun o ha in op imizing he up ake o esea ch p ojec

wo lds. We do his by using he esul s o he o he wo k packages and by using he asks and
challenges in ci ies and wi hin speci ic o ganisa ions wi hin he domain o child en’s men al, physical
and social heal h and cogni i e de elopmen . This hen again can eed back in o he wo k packages.
We wan o place he ask o s akeholde iden i ica ion, in e ac ion and in ol emen in o a la ge

The ocus o ask 8.1 is desc ibed as ‘Connec ing science o policy’. This ask will es ablish a bi-
di ec ional dialogue be ween he Equal-Li e p ojec and (in e )na ional, egional, local p o essionals,
om public and p i a e sec o s as well as associa ions o NGOs’, selec ed on a (Equal-Li e) opical
ocus.
