The u al si e ‘Wes ham Island’ is loca ed on la , unmanaged and non-i iga ed
g assland, 16 km o he sou h o he u ban si e in a emo e a ea ha is domina ed by
in ensi e a ming (49.086°N. 123.177°W, WGS-84, 2 m a.s.l.). The si e is
cha ac e ized as Local Clima e Zone 11 'low plan co e '. Ins umen s used in his
s udy o measu e adia i e and u bulen luxes we e si ed on a ipod sys em (CM-115,
Campbell Scien i ic Inc., Logan, UT, USA), 1.5 and 1.8 m abo e he local g ound
su ace. The si e was colonized by a di e se se o all g asses ha anged in a e age
s and heigh be ween 0.5 m (win e ) and a maximum o 175 m (Augus 2009). Heigh s
