ag icul u al and o es biomass wi h Bio-Based Technologies (BBTs). Wi hin he scope o BBioNe s,
a ious ac i i ies a e unde aken, encompassing he ga he ing, gene a ion, and/o manipula ion o
da a. The goal is o boos he ( e)de ini ion o alue chains, s imula ing c oss- e ilisa ion beyond
bo de s, and b inging Eu ope o he o e on o a ming, o es y, and bioeconomy wi h economically
iable and sus ainable p ac ices.
In BBioNe s p ojec s, we delimi he ield o Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) o a mo e ci cumsc ibed
se ; we mean Bio-Based Technologies (BBTs) as i ela es o he managemen and/o p ocessing o
ag icul u al and o es biomass wi h Bio-Based Technologies. This consis s i s ly o he de elopmen
o a me hodology o knowledge compila ion (guidelines and ele an empla es) and he c ea ion o
an in en o y o p o ide easy access o all in o ma ion abou a ailable BBTs collec ed om ecen ly
comple ed and ongoing EIP AGRI Ope a ional G oups (OGs) and o he EU- unded p ojec s & ini ia i es.
In his ligh , we ha e he ollowing objec i es:

implemen ing BBT- ela ed p ac ices, especially a a egional le el. In addi ion, he awa eness o he
economic and en i onmen al bene i s associa ed wi h BBTs allow o d aw a clea pic u e o he cu en
s a e o ag icul u al/ o es y p ac ices and compile hem in a comp ehensi e desc ip ion. The esul s
o he in en o y will ela e he iden i ied BBTs (OGs in p og ess and om o he EU- unded p ojec s

2.1 Backg ound
TASK 2.1 s a ed om a li e a u e e iew ha p o ides de ini ions and classi ica ions o BBTs o
es ablish a me hodology ha iden i ies c i e ia and pa ame e s o he selec ing o BBTs. BBTs
cons i u e a subse wi hin a b oade ca ego y o Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) ha acco ding o
he Eu opean Commission a e echnological inno a ions wi h he po en ial o os e global
compe i i eness ha ac as enable s o p og ess in a ious ields, helping o ans o m p oduc ion
me hods, enhance e iciency, and p omo e sus ainable solu ions. KETs a e ypically cha ac e ised by a
c oss-cu ing impac on mul iple indus ies and may include mic o/nano-elec onics and pho onics,
li e-science echnologies, A i icial in elligence, ad anced ma e ials, ad anced manu ac u ing and
digi al secu i y and connec i i y (Eu opean Commission, 2018).
KETs se e as a s a egic ounda ion o ad ancing Bioeconomy goals, acili a ing he shi om ossil
o biological esou ces and op imizing p ocess e iciency, ul ima ely p omo ing sus ainable indus ial
inno a ion. This in eg a ed app oach, which conside s socio-economic aspec s and s akeholde
pe spec i es, con ibu es o shaping a comp ehensi e amewo k o sus ainable p og ess. The e o e,
KETs eme ge as p ac ical solu ions o indus ies seeking o enhance hei pe o mance, bo h in
en i onmen al and economic e ms (Laibach e al., 2019).
KETs adop ing bioeconomic s a egies a e de ined explici ly de ined as bio-based echnologies,
ep esen ing a subse ha inco po a es echnologies o p ac ices ha u ilize non- ood eeds ock,
ci cula i y p inciples, o a combina ion o hem o c ea e di e se p oduc s. These echnologies ocus
on he sus ainable u iliza ion o biomass h ough ad anced p ocesses, playing a ole in ansi ioning
owa ds a bioeconomy ha p omo es global compe i i eness and enhances e iciency in he
p oduc ion o goods and se ices (Escoba and Laibach, 2021).
Conce ning he classi ica ion, a ecen s udy by Escoba and Laibach (2021) p oposed a scheme o
ca ego ise KETs based on he eeds ock employed (plan esidues and pe ennials, designe c ops,
algae, o biological was e) o he unde lying echnological con igu a ion (enzyme/mic obial assis ed
p ocessing o bio e ine ies). The selec ed KETs e e o echnologies ha ei he boos ag icul u al
p oduc i i y and he use o non- ood biomass o inc ease he e iciency o biomass con e sion and
was e s eam ecycling. Based on his, a wo- ie app oach was p oposed, in which selec ed KETs we e
i s ly classi ied in o wo main ca ego ies, namely he ype o eeds ock employed (F) and he
echnological con igu a ion adop ed (C) (Figu e 1).

o iden i ying in a clea and sha ed manne he BBTs (Escoba and Laibach, 2021), he e y nex s ep
was o pick and choose c i e ia and pa ame e s wi h he abili y o desc ibe and ca ego ise BBTs. In ou
opinion he s a ing poin o his s ep was coming ou om he peculia li e a u e abou BBTs.
The app oach is o conduc a ask easily and o de elop a model ha would be easily unde s ood and
use ul o he nex s eps o he p ojec . Fo his eason, i was decided o cons uc a ma ix using an
easily illable Excel ile as suppo ha conso ium pa ne s could easily ill o build an in en o y.
The p ocess o iden i ying and choosing a iables o be used o de ine and cha ac e ise BBTs has
ollowed a mul ile el pa h (Figu e 2).
