known as TUCON-GS 2 a successo o OMUCON-GS 1 can be used o ex ac and analyze his da a.
Da abase managemen sys em me hods and implemen a ions like eco ding o da a in ables, que ies and
epo , using Visual Basic as on end o he sys em and Mic oso excel as epo , he sys em and he
esea ch pe o ms acco ding o wha is needed and gene a ed aluable indings. O e all he TUCON-
GS 2 can p oduce help ul and meaning ul da a as i p omo ed simple educa ional da a mining. The
sys em se es as a i al elemen in he imp o emen o quali y educa ion o he College. The main
pu pose o his s udy is o documen and p esen he pe o mance and ope a ion o he sys em om
incep ion up o i s p esen o m, sol e he epo gene a ion challenge o e aining he old o ma
in eg a ed in he new sys em and o he p omo ion o DBMS, Compu e Science and Nu sing Educa ion
in Tob uk, Libya.

1. INTRODUCTION
G ading is de ined in educa ion as he p ocess o applying s anda dized measu emen s o
a ying le els o achie emen in a cou se[1].In mos coun ies, all g ades om all cu en
classes a e a e aged o c ea e a g ade poin a e age (GPA) o he ma king pe iod o a semes e
o Colleges and Uni e si ies. The GPA is calcula ed by aking he numbe o g ade poin s a
s uden ea ned in a gi en pe iod o ime [2].Academic pe o mance sugges s how well a s uden
accomplished asks and s udies [3]. S uden e en ion and pe o mance a e deemed as impo an
issues o bo h educa o s and s uden s [4].
Academic pe o mance can be measu ed by di e en assessmen s like class es ma ks, lab
pe o mance, assignmen , quiz and a endance [5]. The accumula ed ma ks will hen be
a e aged. The GPA was hen e alua ed in he ollowing adjec i al a ing in Libya, 85-100%
Pe ec o Excellen , 75-84% Ve y Good, 65-74% Good, 50-64% Accep ed and 0-49 as
Failed/Unsa is ac o y [6]. In Tob uk Uni e si y College o Nu sing ( o me ly Oma Al Mukh a

s uden s’ pe sonal in o ma ion, educa ional pe o mance o e e y subjec wi h semes e s and
school yea di ided in o se e al que ies [7].Implemen ed since academic yea o 2010-2011,
da a s o age and e ie al we e made easy. I has unde gone se e al changes in e ms o
ope a ional aspec s. In 2014 he au ho uses he sys em o a da a mining esea ch [7].
Da abase managemen sys em is a sui e o compu e so wa e p o iding in e ace be ween use s
and da abases [8]. Da abase has been explo ed and pe o med o many yea s, known as a
collec ion o s uc u ed in o ma ion abou a subjec o o a pa icula pu pose [9]. The amoun
o da a s o ed in educa ional da abase inc eases apidly o e he yea s [10]and so is he amoun
o da a main ained in any elec onic o ma inc eased no iceably, as he amoun o in o ma ion
doubles so was he da abase a a g ea e pace[11]. Da a was eco ded as i was belie ed o be a
sou ce o po en ially use ul in o ma ion [12]. Da a in e e y bi has a lo o concealed
in o ma ion [13], as Collegia e educa ion e ol es so is he need o execu e da abase
managemen . Da a mining on he o he hand is a echnology used o ex ac meaning ul
in o ma ion and o de elop signi ican ela ionship among a iables s o ed in a da a se [10, 11].
Cu en ly Tob uk Uni e si y College o Nu sing G ading Sys em e sion 2 o TUCON-GS 2 is
he da abase sys em being used by he college. A successo o he OMUCON-GS 2 a e he
Tob uk b anch o Oma Al Mukh a Uni e si y sepa a ed om he main campus in A.Y. 2015-
2016 [14]. In his esea ch, he p oponen p esen ed a G ading Sys em cus om buil o he use
o he College o Nu sing. Explo ing he uses and bene i s o he sys em he s udy aimed o
p o ide wo hy educa ional da a o he Ins i u ion in aide o imp o ing educa ional compe ence
and academic pe o mance as a whole. The s udy also p omo es he use o Da abase
Managemen Sys em o handle educa ional eco ds.
2. MATERIALS AND METHODS
2.1 Sys em and Da a P esen a ion
The sys em will be p esen ed using exis ing da a se s o Academic pe o mance by he s uden s
in he academic semes e and he whole school yea as well. Simple da abase managemen
elemen app oach and implemen a ion was used o ex ac , analyze and p esen he da a in
use ul o ma . The s uden da abase g ading sys em TUCON-GS 2 was used o pe o m
da abase managemen and s a is ical ea men o da a. Collec ed da a and sys em ope a ion
we e o ganized in o igu es o pe mi ease o analysis. All da a measu es and i s p esen a ion
we e pe o med and gene a ed by he so wa e applica ion TUCON-GS 2. Repo gene a ion
codes o he ac ual sys em was also used.
2.2 S udy Popula ion
The s udy popula ion consis ed o 7 ba ches o s uden s we e all eco ds a e in he cu en
sys em. Ba ch 2011, his o ically he 4

Academic Yea (AY) 2010-2011, and he pionee ing ba ch o be en e ed in he sys em as 1

yea s uden s’ in he College. Respec i ely Ba ch 2012 up o Ba ch 2017was s uden s’ who
en e ed he college in AY 2011-2012 un il AY 2016-2017. Popula ion was selec ed based on
hei s uden numbe hence named Ba ch numbe . Addi ionally olde ba ches 2008, 2009 and
2010 we e also in he sys em albei wi h pa ial eco ds in he old and in he new sys em.

Sys em based on NPL o Non- P ocedu al Language echniques. Depending on he
speci ica ions, he 4GT employ a ious ools o he au oma ic gene a ion o sou ce codes [15].
I is he i al ool which uses he non-p ocedu al language o epo gene a ion, da abase que y,
da a manipula ion, use in e ace, code gene a ion, sp ead shee capabili ies and mo e.
2.4 So wa e Applica ion
Tob uk Uni e si y College o Nu sing G ading Sys em Ve sion 2 o TUCON-GS 2 is a
so wa e applica ion ha s o es s uden in o ma ion, subjec s o e ed and academic eco ds. The
sys em was u ilized o pe o m da a measu emen and p esen a ion. The sys em was c ea ed
using Visual Basic e sion 6 as on end, Mic oso Access o back end and Mic oso Excel
o epo gene a ion.
2.5 Clinical Ins uc o
A clinical ins uc o co-au ho ed he esea ch o p o e he in eg i y o he cou ses o e ed,
ope a ional aspec o he Nu sing College and e alua ion o da a. Compu a ional p ocess o
majo nu sing subjec s especially he ma ks o Rela ed Nu sing Educa ion (nu sing labo a o y)
and In ensi e Nu sing P ac icum (hospi al base). The sys em is in ended o bene i he Nu sing
College o Tob uk Uni e si y, clinical ins uc o and acul y membe , and nu sing s uden s.
3. The G ading Sys em
S uden epo we e eco ded and ex ac ed in TUCON-GS 2, igu es will be used o p esen he
ac ual sc een sho o he sys em du ing i s ope a ion. His o ical ope a ion o he old sys em un il
he la es e sion will also be p esen ed.
3.1 The old sys em
P io o he OMUCON-GS 1, he College o Nu sing uses Mic oso Excel o eco d and epo
he esul o he academic pe o mance o he s uden s. Se e al wo kshee s’ was used o
ep esen e e y subjec o cou se o a gi en semes e o school yea ( he College s a ed a
yea ly p og am o nu sing ins ead o a semes e ). Ano he wo kshee was used o p esen he
esul o all cou ses, GPA and a ing, all wo kshee combined will compose he wo kbook o 1
yea le el. Reco ds and ields we e mos ly w i en in A abic Language.

3.2 OMUCON-GS 1
In 2009, he College o Nu sing changes hei p og am om yea ly o semes e pe iod. The
cou se ou line was imp o ed, mo e subjec s we e added, and passing ma k o nu sing subjec s
was inc eased om 50 o 60. As he need o an o ganized da abase inc eased in 2010 he
managemen o CON sugges ed he c ea ion o a G ading Sys em. The au ho c ea ed he
da abase in Mic oso Access, using Visual Basic o Use In e ace. E en ually a e a se ies o
es o epo , he au ho decided o use Mic oso Excel o epo gene a ion called by a
p ocedu e in Visual Basic.

5. CONCLUSION
Tob uk Uni e si y College o Nu sing G ading Sys em e sion 2 pe o med gene ally well as a

o ganizing and so ing o da a e ie al, and epo gene a ion. The sys em is unique in i s
design as he epo s we e e ained om he old sys em bu eco ding was in he new da abase
sys em ins ead. The s udy p esen ed he ope a ional aspec s o he College o Nu sing in Tob uk
Uni e si y in e ms o g ading o nu sing s uden s oge he wi h he use o TUCON-GS 2 and
his o y o i s p edecesso s using ac ual a chi ed epo s. Po ion o he ac ual sou ce code was
also p esen ed o add ess he epo gene a ion equi emen o he College. The sys em p omo es
no only he use o Da abase Managemen sys em and da a mining bu p omo es he whole
Nu sing p og am in Tob uk Uni e si y as well, being one o he ew Colleges using a sys ema ic
eco d handling o da a in Libyan Uni e si ies. The TUCON-GS 2 can also gene a e use ul da a
and u n i o a meaning ul one o p omo e educa ional da a mining and imp o ing quali y
educa ion.
