Abs ac
The genus Oxy opis L. (Fabaceae) comp ises o e 600 accep ed species, anking
amongs he la ges in he amily. Nea ly 100 Oxy opis axa ha e been epo ed om
Mongolia, spanning i e subgene a and 20 sec ions in Mongolia. In his s udy, a new
species, Oxy opis jams anii Munkh . & Baasanm., om he Ikh Bogd Moun ains in Mon-
golia, is desc ibed and illus a ed. Based on mo phological cha ac e is ics, i belongs o
he sec ion Xe obia. Al hough simila o O. lep ophylla and O. sobole skajae wi hin he
sec ion, O. jams anii is clea ly dis inguished by i s indumen um, aceme s uc u e, lea le
numbe and shape and co olla colou . The i s occu ence o O. sobole skajae — p e i-
ously known only om he Republic o Tu a o Russia — in he lo a o Mongolia is also
epo ed he e. Taxonomic nomencla u e, mo phological desc ip ions, dis ibu ion maps
and ield pho og aphs o he new species and i s wo close ela i es a e p o ided.

In oduc ion
The genus Oxy opis L. (locoweed), comp ising mo e han 600 accep ed spe-
cies (Malyshe 2008; POWO 2025), is one o he la ges and mos di e se
gene a in Fabaceae (Malyshe 2008). I s na i e ange spans he suba c ic and
empe a e egions o he No he n Hemisphe e (POWO 2025). In Mongolia,
nea ly 100 Oxy opis axa ha e been epo ed, ep esen ing i e subgene a and
20 sec ions (Ulziykhu ag 2003; Malyshe 2008; Baasanmunkh e al. 2022). Re-
cen ly, a new species O. oyunmaae Munkh . & Baasanm., was desc ibed om
he Khus gul Region o Mongolia (Baasanmunkh e al. 2025a).
The sec ion Xe obia Bunge, comp ising mon ane xe ophy es, includes 27
species dis ibu ed ac oss Cen al Asia and Asian Russia (Malyshe 2008).
Amongs hese, 15 species ha e been epo ed om Mongolia, including ou
endemics and eigh subendemics (Baasanmunkh e al. 2021, 2022). This sec-
ion is cha ac e ised by impa ipinna e lea es wi h 2–8 pai s o lea le s and
acemes bea ing 1–8 lowe s. The lowe s a e la ge (20–30 mm long), wi h
sessile o s ipi a e (s ipe o 5 mm) legumes ha a e o oid o cylind ical, 5–27

e al. 2010). Recen s udies ha e examined gene ic di e si y and phylogene ic
ela ionships (Kholina e al. 2021) as well as na u al selec ion on lea shape
(Wang e al. 2021) in se e al species o sec ion Xe obia om China, Sibe ia and
Mongolia. Wi hin he sec ion, only one species, Oxy opis sobole skajae Pjak,
has been desc ibed om he Republic o Tu a, Russia (Pyak 2014).
In he p esen s udy, a new species, O. jams anii, om sec ion Xe obia in
Mongolia, is desc ibed, based on ex ensi e mo phological e idence. Addi ion-
ally, O. sobole skajae is newly eco ded o he Mongolian lo a.
Ma e ials and me hods
Field su eys o collec ing Oxy opis specimens and de ailed ield pho o-
g aphs ha e been conduc ed ac oss Mongolia since 2020, yielding o e
200 he ba ium specimens deposi ed in he UBU (He ba ium o he Na ional
Uni e si y o Mongolia). A a ge ed expedi ion was unde aken in he Ikh
Bogd Moun ains, Bayankhongo P o ince, om 2–14 July 2025; his sou h-
e n Mongolian ange eaches a maximum ele a ion o 3,600 m. Addi ion-
al he ba ium specimens we e examined om he He ba ia ALTB, LE, MW,
NS, GFW, UBA and UBU (Thie s 2023) and Flo aGREIF (h ps:// lo ag ei .
uni-g ei swald.de). Pho o obse a ions o selec ed Oxy opis species we e
c oss- e i ied h ough he “Flo a o Mongolia” p ojec on iNa u alis pla o m
(h ps://www.ina u alis .o g/p ojec s/ lo a-o -mongolia; Baasanmunkh e
al. (2025b)). A dis ibu ion map was p oduced, based on hese he ba ium
specimen eco ds using A cGIS (Es i 2012).
Resul s and discussion
In his s udy, a new species, Oxy opis jams anii Munkh . & Baasanm., is de-
sc ibed om he Ikh Bogd Moun ains, Jins Soum, Bayankhongo P o ince,
Mongolia. In addi ion, O. sobole skajae is epo ed o he i s ime om he
Mongolian lo a. Taxonomic no es o h ee species in sec ion Xe obia includ-
ing O. jams anii, O. lep ophylla (Pall.) DC. and O. sobole skajae a e gi en.

lyx 12–14 mm long, wi h dense, long whi e ichomes ( s. O. lep ophylla, 8–11

whi e ichomes; lobes acumina e, 2.5–3 mm. Co olla pu ple o bluish-pu ple;
s anda d 20–22 mm long wi h b oad-o al, undi ided lamina; wings 16–18 mm
long, sho e han s anda d, apex obliquely ema gina ed; keel 13–15 mm, wi h
a beak ca. 2 mm a apex. Legume memb anous, b oadly o a e, in la ed and
cys -like, 1-locula , 20–30 (including a 3–5 mm long beak) × 12–15 mm, wi h a
en al sep um up o 2.5 mm b oad, co e ed wi h whi e, squa ose, so hai s.
Dis ibu ion. Endemic o Mongolia (Fig. 5).
Habi a . This species occu s in g a elly alpine a eas and mon ane g asslands.
E ymology. The species is named in honou o P o . Tseden Jams an (Цэдэн
Жамсран, bo n in 1935), a dis inguished Mongolian bo anis who made signi -
ican con ibu ions o he s udy and documena ion o he lo a o Mongolia
(such as Flo a o he Gu an Saikhan Moun ains).
