e iciency a Wo ld He i age Si es. Technologies like VR and AR en ich his o ical na a i es,
os e ing isi o imme sion and sa is ac ion while p omo ing sus ainable de elopmen
(Ye sü en & Özel,2024;Y. Zhang & Szabó,2024). Despi e apid economic g ow h in China’s
coas al ci ies, esea ch on AR and VR emains ocused on Wes e n si es, lea ing gaps
ega ding Chinese des ina ions (Yu e al.,2024;Khalil e al.,2023). Unique sociocul u al,
beha io al, and policy ac o s in China necessi a e examining how hese echnologies
in luence isi o expe iences and ou comes. Gi en he high concen a ion o ou ism
ac i i ies, economic de elopmen , and in e na ional engagemen in China’s coas al he i age
si es, unde s anding how digi al ans o ma ion un olds in hese loca ions is c ucial o
bo h academic inqui y and p ac ical implemen a ion (Buhalis e al.,2023). While his
s udy ocuses on coas al he i age si es, p e ious esea ch on non-coas al he i age si es has
explo ed digi al adop ion unde di e en con ex ual ac o s, such as accessibili y, isi o
demog aphics, and local policy suppo (Y. Li e al.,2024). Recognizing hese dis inc ions,
his s udy aims o p o ide insigh s speci ically ele an o coas al he i age se ings.

This s udy employs s uc u ed su eys and s uc u al equa ion modeling (SEM) o
explo e how AR and VR enhance digi al pa icipa ion, au hen ici y pe cep ions, and sa is-
ac ion, ul ima ely d i ing ecommenda ion beha io s (Y. Li e al.,2024;Polishchuk e al.,
2023). The S imulus–O ganism–Response (SOR) amewo k links ex e nal s imuli (digi al
ea u es) o in e nal esponses (au hen ici y and sa is ac ion) and beha io al ou comes
( ecommenda ions), p o iding a heo e ical basis o hese ela ionships. While al e na-
i e amewo ks in ou ism esea ch, such as he Technology Accep ance Model (TAM)
o Expec a ion–Con i ma ion Model (ECM), could also explain echnology adop ion and
isi o sa is ac ion, SOR is pa icula ly sui ed o his s udy as i cap u es no only cog-
ni i e and emo ional esponses o digi al ea u es bu also beha io al ou comes, which
a e c ucial in unde s anding AR/VR-d i en engagemen in ou ism con ex s (Kim e al.,
2020). Gi en ha AR and VR expe iences a e designed o e oke psychological engage-
men and au hen ici y pe cep ions, SOR p o ides a mo e comp ehensi e app oach han
models ha p ima ily ocus on echnology adop ion o pos -consump ion sa is ac ion
(Nam e al.,2023).
The concep ual model ou lines co e a iables—pe cep ion o digi al ea u es, pa -
icipa ion, au hen ici y, sa is ac ion, and ecommenda ions—highligh ing hei in e play.
Findings emphasize he impo ance o cul u ally sensi i e digi al ools in enhancing isi o
expe iences and suppo ing sus ainable ou ism (Buhalis e al.,2023;Genc & Gule ekin
Genc,2023). By ex ending Cul u al Au hen ici y Theo y, his esea ch p o ides p ac ical
s a egies o he i age manage s and con ibu o s o unde s and how digi al ans o ma ion
eshapes au hen ici y pe cep ions (McLean e al.,2023;Nam e al.,2023).
2. Li e a u e Re iew
2.1. Digi al T ans o ma ion in He i age Tou ism and Pe cei ed Au hen ici y
The digi aliza ion o he i age ou ism in eg a es ad anced echnologies wi h cul u al
and na u al he i age, c ea ing dynamic and pe sonalized isi o expe iences (Bekele &
Champion,2019). Imme si e echnologies like VR, AR, digi al guides, and mobile ap-
plica ions enhance in e ac ion, accessibili y, and engagemen , ans o ming how ou is s
pe cei e and connec wi h he i age si es (Pisoni e al.,2021). These inno a ions b idge
angible he i age wi h mode n isi o expec a ions, ede ining educa ional and ec ea ional
expe iences (Zandi,2023). By le e aging in e ac i e ools and digi al s o y elling, hey no
only imp o e isi o sa is ac ion bu also s eng hen pe cep ions o au hen ici y, os e ing
he emo ional connec ions essen ial o meaning ul and memo able expe iences (V e akis
e al.,2019;Ben o d e al.,2022). As digi al echnologies eshape global he i age ou ism,
hei adop ion in China e lec s dis inc sociocul u al dynamics (Sha a uddin e al.,2024).
Unde he amewo k o Chinese he i age ou ism, exis ing s udies b oadly classi y
isi o expe iences in o wo p ima y ypes: (1) con en ional he i age ou ism (R. Zhang,
2020) and (2) digi ally in eg a ed ou ism (Liu,2020). Con en ional app oaches, cen e ed
on s a ic displays, physical a i ac s, and guided ou s, p io i ize he p ese a ion and
educa ion o cul u al alues while e ec i ely con eying his o ical na a i es (Jamal & Hill,
2013;Zidianakis e al.,2021). Howe e , hese me hods o en ail o mee he in e ac i i y
and pe sonaliza ion demands o mode n ou is s, limi ing hei engagemen and emo ional
esonance (Egge e al.,2020). Digi ally in eg a ed ou ism, by con as , u ilizes ad anced
echnologies such as VR, AR, digi al guides, and mobile applica ions o c ea e pa icipa o y
en i onmen s ha enhance isi o engagemen and os e deepe connec ions wi h cul u al
na a i es (Singh e al.,2024). These ools se e wo p ima y objec i es: (1) enhancing
ou is sa is ac ion by deli e ing imme si e, pe sonalized expe iences (H. W. Huang e al.,
2023) and (2) s eng hening pe cep ions o au hen ici y h ough in e ac i e and con ex -
ich p esen a ions o cul u al he i age (Pesca in e al.,2024). By ocusing on how isi o s

Building upon hese ca ego iza ions, esea ch highligh s he impo ance o digi al
ea u es, pa icipa ion, and au hen ici y in shaping ou is expe iences and in luencing
beha io s (Ve ma e al.,2022). In e ac i e echnologies ha e been shown o enhance engage-
men by enabling ac i e in e ac ion wi h cul u al na a i es, which signi ican ly imp o es
pe cei ed au hen ici y (Pe ousi e al.,2022). The alignmen be ween cul u al con en and
echnological p esen a ion s ongly in luences ou is s’ accep ance and sa is ac ion, ensu -
ing digi al ools mee e ol ing expec a ions (Z. Chen e al.,2024). Fu he mo e, ad anced
echnologies con ibu e o cogni i e esponses, pe cei ed alue, and o e all sa is ac ion
by p o iding con ex ually ich and dynamic in e ac ions (Dwi edi e al.,2024). Howe e ,
despi e hese ad an ages, he inc easing eliance on digi al echnologies in he i age ou ism
has also aised conce ns. Some schola s a gue ha excessi e digi aliza ion may lead o
a o m o “digi al de achmen ”, whe e isi o s become mo e ocused on echnological
media ion a he han he angible cul u al he i age i sel (Egge e al.,2020). Addi ionally,
he accu acy and au hen ici y o digi al econs uc ions emain a challenge, as ce ain
echnological in e p e a ions migh inad e en ly dis o his o ical na a i es (Kim e al.,
2020). These po en ial d awbacks highligh he need o a balanced app oach ha maxi-
mizes he bene i s o digi al ools while sa egua ding he cul u al and his o ical in eg i y o
he i age si es.
In egions such as China’s sou heas e n coas , ecognized o hei economic and cul-
u al p ominence, he in eg a ion o digi al echnologies plays a pi o al ole in add essing
he g owing demands o imme si e and pe sonalized expe iences while ein o cing he
cul u al and his o ical signi icance o he i age si es (Liu,2020). Gi en hese conside a-
ions, his s udy aims o explo e how digi al he i age ou ism can enhance isi o engage-
men and au hen ici y pe cep ions while mi iga ing he isks associa ed wi h excessi e
echnological media ion.
2.2. Adap a ion o he SOR F amewo k o Tou is Beha io Analysis
The S imulus–O ganism–Response (SOR) model, i s de eloped in en i onmen al
psychology (Meh abian,1974), has been widely applied o examine how ex e nal ac o s
shape ou is pe cep ions and beha io s. This model was ini ially in oduced o explo e
he ela ionship be ween ex e nal s imuli, in e nal media ing p ocesses, and esul ing
beha io al ou comes (Wang & Li,2023). Wi hin he con ex o ou ism esea ch, he SOR
model ca ego izes s imuli (S) as ex e nal ac o s, such as echnological a ibu es, se ice
en i onmen s, and cul u al se ings, ha in luence ou is s’ pe cep ions and expe iences
(Xiang e al.,2022). The o ganism (O) componen cap u es in e nal media ing p ocesses,
including emo ional engagemen , cogni i e e alua ions, and pe cep ions o au hen ici y,
which link ex e nal s imuli o speci ic beha io al ou comes (Kim e al.,2020). The esponse
(R) dimension ocuses on beha io al ou comes such as ou is sa is ac ion, loyal y, and
ecommenda ion in en ions, p o iding insigh s in o how ex e nal and in e nal ac o s
in e ac o shape ou is expe iences (Ca doso & F aga,2024).
While he SOR amewo k e ec i ely explains how ex e nal s imuli in luence ou is
beha io , i is essen ial o con as i wi h o he beha io al models o cla i y i s applicabili y
in digi al he i age ou ism. Compa ed o he Technology Accep ance Model (TAM), which
p ima ily emphasizes pe cei ed use ulness and ease o use in adop ing new echnology
(Q. Huang e al.,2023), he SOR amewo k o e s a mo e comp ehensi e app oach by

wo k, aligning i s componen s o ep esen he ela ionships among he s udy a iables
(Meh abian,1974). Pe cep ion o digi al ea u es ep esen s he s imuli (S), encompassing

isi o engagemen by deli e ing imme si e, expec a ion-su passing expe iences (Yu e al.,
2024;Khalil e al.,2023). These echnologies en ich he isi o jou ney by ans o ming

os e ing a mo e meaning ul and pe sonalized isi (C anme e al.,2023;Ch’ng e al.,

(Polishchuk e al.,2023).

expe iences in con eying a si e’s cul u al essence (Yuan & Hong,2023). In he e a o digi al

This s udy employs a s uc u ed ques ionnai e o collec da a on isi o pe cep ions
o digi al ans o ma ion a Wo ld He i age Si es in Chinese coas al ci ies, ocusing on
key a iables such as pe cep ions o digi al ea u es, digi al pa icipa ion and in e ac ion,
au hen ici y o pe cep ion, ou is sa is ac ion, and ecommenda ion possibili ies (Madzík
e al.,2023;Abbasi e al.,2023;Ra he e al.,2024;Da˘g e al.,2023). Ad anced s a is ical
me hods, including eg ession analysis and s uc u al equa ion modeling (SEM), a e used
o analyze hese da a, e eal ela ionships, and cons uc a comp ehensi e in e ac ion
model (P eko e al.,2023;Balak ishnan e al.,2023).
3.1. Resea ch Design
This s udy adop ed a su ey-based quan i a i e esea ch design o explo e ela ion-
ships among key a iables ela ed o digi al ans o ma ion a Wo ld He i age Si es. This
app oach is widely ecognized o i s abili y o gene a e s anda dized, compa able da a
and o es causal ela ionships using alida ed s a is ical me hods (Q. Huang e al.,2023;
Viglia & Dolnica ,2020).
3.2. Da a Collec ion P ocess

Decembe 2023 and June 2024, le e aging he pla o m’s p o en eliabili y in cul u al
ou ism s udies (Balak ishnan e al.,2023;Y. Zhang & Szabó,2024). The su ey a ge ed

Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi. The cul u al he i age

Reso and Ou lying Temples, he G ea Wall in Hebei, Moun Tai, he Classical Ga dens

in Fujian, and he Kaiping Diaolou and Villages in Guangdong. The na u al he i age si es
include he Sou h China Ka s in Guangxi and he Wuyi Moun ains in Fujian. Meanwhile,
he Wes Lake Cul u al Landscape in Hangzhou is classi ied as a mixed he i age si e,
possessing bo h cul u al and na u al alue, exempli ying he mul idimensional appeal o
China’s coas al he i age (R. Zhang,2020;Zhu e al.,2023).

o esponses ob ained du ing h ee peak ou ism pe iods (Sp ing Fes i al, May Day Golden
Week, summe aca ions) and 42% du ing o -peak in e als, a empo al s a i ica ion
app oach alida ed by ecen ou ism seasonali y s udies (D. Pa k & Yun,2023;S an che a,
2023). Geo encing echnology es ic ed pa icipa ion o indi iduals wi hin 500 m o
he i age co es du ing ope a ional hou s (8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.), ollowing e hical p o ocols
o loca ion-based da a collec ion (S ingam e al.,2023). Beha io al e i ica ion h ough si e-
speci ic pho o iden i ica ion ques ions excluded 83% o ina en i e esponses, a echnique
p o en e ec i e in enhancing da a quali y o digi al ou ism esea ch (Fisu e al.,2024;
Sha ma e al.,2023).
F om 2068 ini ial submissions, igo ous alida ion p o ocols excluded esponses wi h
geoloca ion e o s exceeding 500 m (12.7%), inconsis en imes amps (9.3%), o logical
con adic ions (58.9%), yielding 402 alid cases. This 19.43% eligibili y a e aligns wi h

in en ions (R). The analysis e ealed ha hese ac o s collec i ely explain 30.9% o he a i-
ance in ecommenda ion in en ions, as indica ed by an R-squa ed alue o 0.309 (Table 12).
The model’s signi icance is con i med by an F- alue o 89.849 (p< 0.001), sugges ing ha
