o es ablish esea ch ends among publica ions in he Asian Jou nal o Shipping and Logis ics (AJSL). This s udy
implemen ed he social ne wo k analysis (SNA) me hod using h ee app oaches (deg ee cen ali y, closeness
cen ali y, and be weenness cen ali y) o highligh he connec ions be ween esea ch keywo ds published om
2009 o 2022. This s udy di ided he publica ions in o h ee pe iods (2009–2014, 2015–2018, and 2019–2022).
The deg ee cen ali y analysis o SNA o he pe iod 2009–2014 shows ha he keywo ds “con aine shipping,”
“logis ics,” and “po ” anked i s , second, and hi d, espec i ely. The analysis o 2015–2018 shows ha he

1. In oduc ion
The Asian Jou nal o Shipping and Logis ics (AJSL) began publica ion
in 2009, and in 2024, was publishing ou issues annually. The AJSL
co e s pape s on Asia’s shipping, po , anspo , and logis ics sec o s,
pa icula ly in he ields o managemen , inance, accoun ing, insu ance,
in e na ional business, and ma ke ing (Jeon e al., 2016; Maskey e al.,
2018; Lee & Shin, 2019; Nguyen e al., 2021). No p e ious esea ch has
iden i ied he o e all esea ch ends o s udies published in he AJSL.
The analysis o esea ch ends in pape s published in academic
jou nals can help es ablish he de elopmen o he ield by explo ing he
esea ch con en and cha ac e is ics conduc ed om he pas o he
p esen . Re isi ing esea ch ends is essen ial because o i s ole in
es ablishing a jou nal’s academic iden i y and he consequen sys em-
a ic de elopmen o esea ch opics in he ield (Lee e al., 2009; Wang
and Ho, 2011; Weismaye & Pezenka, 2017).
An analysis o esea ch ends wi hin AJSL publica ions is c ucial o
comp ehending he nuances and pa e ns o academic esea ch de el-
opmen in he shipping ield. The e o e, an analysis was conduc ed on
he AJSL pape s published wi hin he pas 14 yea s and e ie ed using
ScienceDi ec . The analysis is di ided in o h ee s ages. The i s pe iod
was 2009–2014, du ing which he AJSL published wo o h ee issues
annually. In 2009 and 2010, he AJSL eleased wo issues, which
inc eased o h ee annual issues in he pe iod 2011–2014. The publi-
ca ion a e du ing his i s pe iod was lowe han he la e a e o he
ou issues pe yea . Wi h bo h in e als las ing 4 yea s, he second
pe iod was designa ed as 2015–2018, and he inal pe iod as
2019–2022.
In pu sui o his esea ch goal, he social ne wo k analysis (SNA)
me hod was in oduced o unde s and he s uc u e be ween keywo ds.
SNA was applied o de i e a ious measu es o he cen ali y o he
nodes wi hin he ne wo k s uc u e, which p o ides a isualiza ion o
he connec ions be ween nodes ha a e subjec o social ela ions,
esea che and esea ch ela ions, and s uc u al ela ionships. The e-
o e, his me hod allows o he deduc ion o he deg ee, closeness, and
be weenness cen ali y measu es o a de e mined keywo d ne wo k,
which a e used o iden i y he cha ac e is ics o esea ch ends and
opics by pe iod. Fo his eason, he analysis no only allows o he
iden i ica ion o he jou nal’s na u e, bu also acili a es a deepe un-
de s anding o he ends obse ed, se ing he in ended pu pose o
gaining insigh s in o he p oposed publica ions in he ield o shipping
and logis ics.
Based on he esul s o his s udy, he o e all low o esea ch in he
Asian shipping sec o was e ealed, as he na u e o he issues du ing
each s udy pe iod could be app ecia ed h ough he op keywo ds

analysis o he esul s and discussion o he implica ions.
2. Li e a u e e iew
In a s udy conduc ed by Wang and Ho (2011), an assessmen
ega ding he global esea ch and publica ion ends wi hin he “en i-
onmen al science” ca ego y o he ISI subjec classi ica ion was made.
Da a spanning 1998–2009 we e colla ed om he online e sions o he
Science Ci a ion Index Expanded and Web o Science. Simila ly, Wang
e al. (2011) analyzed global scien i ic ou pu wi hin he “wa e e-
sou ces” ca ego y o he ISI subjec classi ica ion. Co e ing a du a ion o
16 yea s (1993–2008), hei s udy employed he same me hod o da a
acquisi ion and analysis.
Alias e al. (2013) del ed in o esea ch ends associa ed wi h
WebQues ac oss se en schola ly jou nals spanning he pe iod om
2005 o 2012. These jou nals encompassed p ominen i les, such as
Compu e s & Educa ion, Educa ional Technology, and TOJET. A comp e-
hensi e c oss-analysis app oach was unde aken, seg ega ing he s udies
based on publica ion yea and u he dissec ing hem acco ding o
ca ego ies, such as esea ch opics, issue classi ica ion, esea ch con ex
and sampling me hods, esea ch design, esea ch me hodology, and da a
analysis me hods. The scope o he selec ed pape s was dis inc ly
desc ip i e. In pa icula , he explo a ion cen e ed on
in o ma ion- ocused esea ch conce ning he concep and u iliza ion o
WebQues wi hin an educa ional con ex (Alias e al., 2013).
Lei as e al. (2014) examined esea ch ends in humani a ian lo-
gis ics and disas e managemen . O e he pas i e yea s, he numbe o
pape s on his opic has inc eased. Th ough analysis, he au ho s ound
ha mo e esea ch is needed in he disas e eco e y s age, and
communica ion be ween esea che s and p ac i ione s is needed o
mo e applied esea ch. In esponse, academic jou nals published in he
pas ew yea s ha e mos ly ocused on opics ela ed o s a egic decision
making. Howe e , since i was analyzed mainly in academic jou nals, an
addi ional e iew o wo king-le el esea ch is needed in he u u e.
Weismaye and Pezenka (2017) employed a longi udinal la en se-
man ic analysis o keywo ds o in es iga e he dynamics wi hin he In-
e na ional Ma ke ing Re iew jou nal and p oceedings o he ENTER
eTou ism Con e ence. Thei me hodological app oach yields aluable
insigh s in o he cu en landscape o ma ke ing esea ch and e- ou ism.
The me hod u ilized no only sheds ligh on he p e ailing s a e o hese
domains bu also iden i ies ends, unde explo ed a eas, and eme ging
esea ch opics, con ibu ing o a comp ehensi e unde s anding o hese
ields. In a s udy ocused on supply chain managemen , Ca e e al.
(2007) emba ked on a comp ehensi e e o o unco e he sou ces
employed by schola s in his domain o hei esea ch, published in he
Jou nal o Supply Chain Managemen . Th ough he applica ion o SNA,
his s udy sc u inized ci a ions o e 40 yea s o publica ion. This
analy ical app oach p o ides an en iched unde s anding o he schola ly
landscape wi hin he ealm o supply chain managemen , o e ing
aluable insigh s in o in e connec edness and in luen ial sou ces wi hin
he ield.
A comp ehensi e s udy by Dynako e al. (2020) analyzed esea ch
ends wi hin wo majo spo s medicine/a icula jou nals, he Ame -
ican Jou nal o Spo s Medicine (AJSM) and A h oscopy, o e 3 decades.
The in es iga ion e ealed a s eady inc ease in bo h he olume o
published pape s and he ep esen a ion o coun ies con ibu ing o
hese jou nals. Fu he mo e, when compa ing he wo jou nals, he
AJSM had highe coun s in e ms o au ho s, bibliog aphy u iliza ion,
manusc ip pages, and egula ized ci a ions han A h oscopy.
In e es ingly, despi e A h oscopy ha ing a ela i ely smalle p opo ion
o emale i s au ho s and co esponding au ho s han AJSM, i
exhibi ed a as e inc ease in emale au ho ship o e ime. In summa y,
he indings o his s udy con e ged o show a p e ailing upwa d end
in he majo i y o he a iables examined in he AJSM and A h oscopy
(Dynako e al., 2020).
In es iga ing neu osu ge y esea ch ends o e a decade, Ga g e al.
(2022) analyzed schola ly ou pu om six academic jou nals spanning
2011 o 2020. A o al o 39,239 pape s we e included in he examina-
ion, wi h a peak eco ded in 2019 a 6811 pape s. The esea ch e ealed
heigh ened ac i i y om na ions including he Uni ed S a es, China,
Japan, Wes e n Eu ope, and Tu key. Addi ionally, he s udy e ealed a
p opo ional co ela ion be ween he numbe o published pape s and
na ional indica o s, such as popula ion size, illi e acy a e, GDP pe
capi a, and su ge in he numbe o neu osu geons.
In a ecen s udy by Gallaghe e al. (2023), 2738 pape s published in
se en majo w i ing esea ch jou nals be ween 2000 and 2019 we e
analyzed. The da a ex ac ion encompassed se en academic jou nals,
including no able i les, such as College Composi ion and Communica ion
and College English. No ably, his s udy e ealed ha he highes numbe
o esea ch publica ions occu ed in 2019. Du ing his pe iod, he ol-
ume o e e ences used in hese pape s inc eased concu en ly wi h he
inco po a ion o new pape s as e e ence sou ces. Mo eo e , an in e -
es ing obse a ion eme ged: a decline in he di e si y o wo ds was
disce nible ac oss wo dis inc pe iods: he ini ial 2000s and subse-
quen ly, he 2010s.
Howe e , i is no ewo hy ha while he s udies men ioned ea lie
ocused on using he SNA me hod o examining ends ac oss publica-
ions, ecen li e a u e does no speci ically add ess he segmen a ion o
esea ch ends o e dis inc pe iods. This s udy iden i ied his gap and
endea o ed o b idge i . In esponse, ou s udy segmen s he analysis
in o h ee well-de ined pe iods: 2009–2014, 2015–2018, and
2019–2022. Th ough his segmen a ion, we aim o comp ehensi ely
explo e he esea ch dynamics wi hin each in e al. By conduc ing a
keywo d analysis o pape s published wi hin hese de ined pe iods, ou
s udy seeks o con ibu e bo h quan i a i ely and isually o he cla i-
ica ion o he in e ela ionships and in e ac ions among keywo ds. This
endea o is signi ican , as i p omises o o e a holis ic unde s anding o
he e ol ing esea ch landscape.
3. Me hodology
The SNA me hod is based on Eule ’s g aph heo y (1741) wi h
quan i a i e cha ac e is ics. The SNA me hod was in oduced o un-
de s and and in e p e he s uc u e o indi iduals and he join a ilia-
ion ela ionships o med a ound social ela ionships composed o
indi iduals and o ganiza ions (Lim & Jeon, 2011). The e o e, SNA has
he ad an age o g asping connec ions by de i ing he cen ali y o he
ela ionship be ween each node (o ganiza ion, socie y, and class) o he
ne wo k.
Acco ding o F eeman (1979), SNA analysis can be la gely di ided
in o deg ee cen ali y, be weenness cen ali y, and closeness cen ali y;
each cen ali y is di ided in o absolu e and ela i e deg ee cen ali y.
Absolu e deg ee cen ali y measu es he numbe o o he nodes con-
nec ed o each node, whe eas ela i e deg ee cen ali y de i es alues by
conside ing he size o he ne wo k.
Deg ee cen ali y deno es a quan i a i e assessmen o he ex en o
which each node wi hin he ne wo k is linked o o he nodes (F eeman,
1979). In essence, connec ions be ween nodes a e es ablished ia links
ha in e connec each node wi hin he ne wo k, and he g ea e he
numbe o connec ions be ween a gi en node and o he nodes, he

4. Empi ical analysis
The esea ch keywo ds o he AJSL we e selec ed h ough a sys-
ema ic collec ion o a ailable li e a u e in his jou nal be ween 2009
and 2022. A o al o 331 academic publica ions we e e ie ed om he
online sou ce Science Di ec , and each esea ch keywo d used by he
au ho s was included in he da abase. Fo his s udy, publica ions we e
di ided in o h ee pe iods (2009–2014, 2015–2018, and 2019–2022) o
assess ends and p o ide an in-dep h analysis o he jou nal’s iews on
he e olu ion o he sec o .
4.1. Fi s pe iod (2009–2014)
4.1.1. Deg ee cen ali y analysis
Deg ee cen ali y measu es he numbe o links o which a node is
connec ed o he emainde o he ne wo k. In o he wo ds, i shows he
in e ac ions a keywo d has in a social ne wo k, which ansla es o a
highe use o ha keywo d in esea ch pape s. The sco es ob ained om
he deg ee cen ali y analysis o his pe iod a e lis ed in Table 1.
Following he analysis esul s, he keywo ds “con aine shipping,”
“logis ics,” and “po ” lead he anking wi h he same alue (0.044). A
isual ep esen a ion o his p ocess is shown in Fig. 1. These s udies
appea ed ollowing e o s o eco e om he 2008 inancial c isis,
which led o an inc ease in global demand and posed a challenge o he
exis ing economic model o in e na ional con aine iza ion. Resea che s
using he “con aine shipping” keywo d co e ed opics ela ed o ship-
ping cos s (Chow & Chang, 2011), in e na ional policies and cons ain s
on shipping line ope a ions (Nai , 2012), and o e all anspo a ion
indus y assessmen unde di e en me hodologies (Miyashi a, 2009).

and anspo ne wo ks in shipping and logis ics (Duc ue & Lugo,
2013), po p icing (Accia o, 2013; Banda a e al., 2013), g een logis ics
(Esmem e al., 2010; Li e al., 2011; Pa k & Yeo, 2012), ma ke o ien-
a ion (Bae & Ha, 2014), po managemen (T an e al., 2011), con aine
de elopmen s a egies (Lu e al., 2010), and ee ade zone policy
analysis (Chiu e al., 2011). Following he same economic-cen e ed in-
e es s, pape s ela ed o g een po logis ics ha e eme ged.
The equal p esence o he h ee keywo ds indica es a simme ing
in e es in ma i ime logis ics, a end ha pa icula ly seemed o ackle
he Ko ean shipping indus y, as e ealed by he ollowing keywo ds in
he ank, “Ko ea” (0.034) and “shipping indus y” (0.034). In summa y,
be ween 2009 and 2014, Asian and global con aine shipping indus ies
expe ienced a dynamic pe iod ma ked by economy- ela ed publica ions
a ge ing manage ial challenges, compe i i eness, ace, in as uc u e,
and echnological and en i onmen al ad ancemen s. The indus y’s
esponse o hese de elopmen s laid he ounda ion o subsequen
changes and adap a ions in he yea s ha ollowed.
4.1.2. Closeness cen ali y analysis (2009–2014)
Closeness cen ali y analysis indica es he sho es pa h, and he e-
o e, he as es keywo d ha in luences he ne wo k. Table 2 p esen s
he esul s o closeness cen ali y analysis.

ional humani a ian elie o ganiza ions. The op- anking posi ion o

sanc ions imposed on I anian con aine po s on e iciency.

Nguyen e al. (2021) and T.L.H. Nguyen e al. (2021) de eloped a
concep ual amewo k o Vie namese po hin e land se ings and he
po en ially ele an ole o d y po s. Kuo e al. (2020) conduc ed a
pe o mance and compe i i eness analysis o Vie namese po s by
implemen ing DEA. Pham and Lee (2019) also s udied Vie nam’s e i-
o y by de eloping a g een ou e model o d y po selec ion.

and Nguyen (2020) examined he ac o s ha impac Vie namese lo-

senbae and Dus (2020) in oduced imp o ed benchma k sugges ions

5. Conclusion
In he con ex o he Asian logis ics academic scene and i s cons an
economic, legal, and in as uc u al shi s, his s udy aims o disce n
esea ch ends in he publica ions o he AJSL. This s udy implemen ed
he SNA me hod using h ee app oaches (deg ee cen ali y, closeness
cen ali y, and be weenness cen ali y) o highligh he connec ions
be ween esea ch keywo ds published om 2009 o 2022.
