pe encies (PIAAC) was commissioned by he OECD o examine he basic compe-

su ey was conduc ed in 2011/2012 and consis ed o adul s om age 16 h ough
65 ha li ed in Ge many (on he e e ence da e o 1 Decembe 2011). The coop-
e a ion p ojec PIAAC-L o GESIS (Leibniz Ins i u e o he Social Sciences) aimed
a ans o ming he PIAAC s udy in o a longi udinal su ey wi h h ee epea
wa es. In 2017, households om his s udy we e in eg a ed in o he SOEP.
– Subsample O: In coope a ion wi h he Fede al Ins i u e o Resea ch on Build-
ing, U ban A ai s and Spa ial De elopmen (BBSR), new households we e e-
c ui ed in 2018 in a eas pa icipa ing in he so-called "Socially In eg a i e Ci y"
(‘Soziale S ad ’) p og am and combined in o subsample O.
– Subsample P: The " op sha eholde " subsample P consis s o households con-
aining indi iduals whose own company sha es o high alue. The p ima y ob-
jec i e o d awing his sample was o pu he ede al go e nmen 's Po e y and
Weal h Repo on a mo e solid empi ical oo ing.
– Subsample Q: In 2019, he SOEP was expanded o include he so-called LGB sam-
ple (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual). This subsample Q supplemen s he SOEP wi h da a
on he li ing condi ions o homo- and bisexual indi iduals.
– Subsample R: In 2022 he SOEP was e eshed by subsample R by addi ional
households. R is a na ionwide ep esen a i e andom sample d awn om he
egis e s o esiden s' egis a ion o ices.
– Subsample S: This sample was d awn in 2024 on he basis o a esiden s' egis-
a ion sample in 300 municipali ies. S is a na ionwide ep esen a i e andom
sample.

2.1 Panel Samples (A-R, M1, M2, M7, M8a-M8c)
The main s udy panel sample su ey began in Feb ua y 2024 and ended in De-
cembe 2024. 22,609 households we e con ac ed du ing his pe iod, and 13,155
households ook pa . The in e iews we e conduc ed in he ollowing modes:

wa e. In p inciple, all ac i e pa icipan s (households and household membe s)
om he p e ious wa e as well as he empo a y d opou s om his wa e - i.e.
hose who suspended hei pa icipa ion in 2023 - a e asked again in 2024 o pa -
icipa e in he s udy. Households o indi iduals who indica ed in 2023 ha hey
a e no longe willing o able o suppo he s udy in he subsequen wa es, on he
o he hand, will no longe pa icipa e in he s udy and do he e o e no ecei e
ano he in i a ion.
As a esul , 22,078 households o m he g oss sample o he 2024 su ey wa e
(see Table 3). O hese, 14,960 belong o he epea edly su eyed households. Pe
design, households o he e eshmen sample om 2023 (M8c) we e only de-
ployed in 2024 i hey pa icipa ed in 2023.

3.1.2 Design
The mixed-mode design used in he IAB-BAMF-SOEP Re ugee Su ey in 2024 is
p esen ed below (Chap e 3.1.2.1). In addi ion, he su ey ins umen s used a e
p esen ed (Chap e 3.1.2.2) so ha an insigh can be gained in o wha con en was
su eyed in 2024. The con ac s a egy (Chap e 3.1.2.3) is hen p esen ed a
household and indi idual le el. Finally, his chap e p esen s in o ma ion on
aining and deploymen o he in e iewe s (Chap e 3.1.2.4).
3.1.2.1 Mixed-mode Design
The IAB-BAMF-SOEP Re ugee Su ey used a simila mixed-mode design as he
main su ey (see Chap e 2.1.2.1), bu wi hou he use o pape -based ins umen s
(PAPI) and s anda d elephone in e iews (CATI).
In he 2024 wa e he sample was spli in o wo anches, wi h he ield pe iod o
he majo i y o households s a ing in May. Bu o a small g oup o households
in he subsample M9-SUARE he ield pe iod only s a ed in he beginning o July,
as he households in ques ion had only ecen ly aken pa in a ollow-up online
su ey be ween he wa es 2023 and 2024 and we e gi en a li le b eak be ween
su eys.
The su ey o a household s a ed wi h he eco ding o upda ing o he household
composi ion in he so-called household ma ix. The upda ing o he household
