Resea ch has mainly ocused on he s ock assessmen o he s iped soldie sh imp, Plesionika edwa dsii
(B and , 1851), because i has shown mode a e o high le els o ishing yield and abundances compa ible
wi h he de elopmen o a new sus ainable ishe y in he Cape Ve de Islands.

was used. Each ishing line was composed by 40-65 aps ope a ing a ound 2.4 m abo e he sea loo ,
using Decap e us maca ellus (Ca angidae) as unique bai o he aps. Fishing dep h was 66-458 m, and
e ec i e ishing ime was 16-18 h. Each ap was a ached o he main bo om line e e y 15 m, and he
maximum a ac ion o his bai was es ablished o be 100 o 150 m, acco ding o he expe ience gained
om he local ishe y o deep-sea lobs e s. So densi y by a ea was calcula ed assuming wo di e en
a eas o a ac ion o he ishing gea . Ini ial biomass was es ima ed om deple ion expe imen s a di e -
en abundance s a ions by applying he Leslie & Da is (1939) me hod, modi ied by Ricke (1975). Each
ishing ope a ion was classi ied acco ding o i s yield (CPUE in g/ ap/nigh ). The po en ial ishing plana
a ea was es ima ed be ween he isoba hyme ic lines be ween 90 and 220 m. To al biomasses (B ) we e
calcula ed om a eas (km2) and mean minimum/maximum densi ies (kg/km2). Maximum sus ainable
yield (MSY) was es ima ed om B using he Bedding on and Cooke (1983) model by en e ing na u al
mo ali y (0.6), g ow h a e (0.53 yea 1) and ec ui men age (1.32 yea ), which a e he pa ame e s o
his a ge species published o he Cana ies. These pa ame e s es ima e a biological exploi a ion a e
() o 0.262. In e pola ions we e applied o es ima e MSY o insula s ocks ep esen ing lesse han 5%
o he o al ishing g ounds o his species in he a chipelago.
