p oblems. I is ideal o engaging, hands-on eaching o ele an da a skills in
enginee ing and is also used by scien is s and enginee s a leading companies ac oss
he globe.
While he undamen al skills add essed in his session include unde s anding a ia ion
and unce ain y, we will also look a applica ions like da a modeling, designing
expe imen s and quali y managemen – all om a s uden ’s pe spec i e.

cu iosi y and each enginee ing da a skills which a e mos in-demand in indus y oday.

1 TEACHING WITH REAL CASES
This sho pape summa izes he key ideas om he p ac ical wo kshop by JMP and p o ides
he links o all ee esou ces sha ed wi h he audience.
1.1 Why eaching wi h eal cases?
Why should you conside using eal p oblems – ypically sha ed as case s udies – in
eaching da a analy ics? The e a e many good a gumen s, which include
1. Real cases help o each he analy ical skills which will be ele an o s uden s in
a u u e wo k o ce ( e e o cus ome s o ies [1] o examples who sha ed o
inspi ed he cases discussed he e)

We will also discuss ha eal cases pe ec ly suppo he GAISE s anda d in
s a is ics educa ion [4], especially he i s ecommenda ion on eaching s a is ical
hinking. Each case is an example o a "p oblem-sol ing and decision-making
p ocess" and equi es mul i a iable hinking:

2 LIVE DEMO
A li e demo will p esen he solu ion o case #52 on p ocess op imiza ion in bio ech
om LONZA [5] (Fig. 3), showing sample con en and s yle o a JMP case s udy. The
demo will also p o ide a p ac ical example abou applying s a is ical hinking,
combining JMP capabili ies o s a is ical disco e ies o sol e a eal-wo ld p oblem.

3 CASES IN THE CLASSROOM
The e a e se e al op ions o use ou cases s udies in eaching: While educa o s can
use case s udies o in-class demons a ions, he mos e ec i e use a e assignmen s
o s uden s as homewo k o g oup p ojec s. The cases can s imula e discussions
abou which s eps o ake o compa isons o al e na i e solu ions. S uden s can also
be asked o p esen he lea ning ou come o “o he decision make s”, o o explain
why and how ce ain me hods ha e been applied.
