Pair work for developing speaking skills

Abstract

Este relatório foi baseado na questão “como podemos fazer os alunos entender a relevância do trabalho a pares na sala de aula de Inglês?”, e o propósito do mesmo é ver as relações entre as actividades a pares na sala de aula de Inglês, a importância destas actividades e o desenvolvimento das capacidades orais na aula de Inglês. Os trabalhos a pares apresentam vários benefícios, especialmente com alunos no ensino primário, e este estudo irá analisar como os alunos reagem a actividades a pares, num período de três ciclos. Durante esse período de três ciclos, foram realizadas actividades a pares, seguidos por um questionário. De seguida, foram analisados esses questionários, que nos deram a informação da opinião dos alunos em relação a actividades a pares, assim como a opinião dos alunos sobre o seu propósito. Os resultados indicam que os alunos têm uma reacção positiva face a trabalhos a pares, mas é necessária uma explicação do seu propósito. Também está provado que os alunos com melhores resultados não necessitam de uma explicação, pois o seu interesse é genuíno desde o primeiro questionário; e os alunos que têm resultados abaixo da média têm uma melhor prestação no uso da L2 e nos trabalhos a pares, após lhe ser dada uma explicação.

Resumo

Os abalhos a pa es ap esen am á ios bene ícios, especialmen e com alunos no
ensino p imá io, e es e es udo i á analisa como os alunos eagem a ac i idades a pa es,
num pe íodo de ês ciclos. Du an e esse pe íodo de ês ciclos, o am ealizadas
ac i idades a pa es, seguidos po um ques ioná io. De seguida, o am analisados esses
ques ioná ios, que nos de am a in o mação da opinião dos alunos em elação a ac i idades
a pa es, assim como a opinião dos alunos sob e o seu p opósi o.
Os esul ados indicam que os alunos êm uma eacção posi i a ace a abalhos a
pa es, mas é necessá ia uma explicação do seu p opósi o. Também es á p o ado que os
alunos com melho es esul ados não necessi am de uma explicação, pois o seu in e esse
é genuíno desde o p imei o ques ioná io; e os alunos que êm esul ados abaixo da média
êm uma melho p es ação no uso da L2 e nos abalhos a pa es, após lhe se dada uma
explicação.

The idea o pai wo k in he English class oom has always puzzled me, since my
expe ience in eaching young lea ne s was p ac ically none be o e beginning his
Mas e 's deg ee. I ha e done e y li le pai wo k ac i i ies in my sho eaching
expe ience, as I was a aid i would be a s i ing ac i i y.
I wan ed o esea ch how pai wo k wo ked in he p ima y class oom, wha
s uden s hough o i and how bene icial i was o he s uden s. The ques ion I based my
esea ch on was “How can we make s uden s see he ele ance o pai wo k in he English
class oom?”. I wan ed he s uden s o unde s and he bene i s o ha ing wo s uden s
wo king oge he , i hey unde s ood he objec i es, how hey would use L2 and,
ine i ably, hei L1 and i hey enjoyed i o no .

Wu (2003) sugges s he e is a mis aken idea ha child en’s skills o lea ning a

s udy, o as long as child en a e p o ided wi h a suppo i e lea ning en i onmen and an

Acco ding o Cu ain & Dahlbu g (2010), in e ac ion is e y impo an o language

3.2.3.2. Ques ionnai es
The ques ionnai es had 11 ques ions and s uden s had o op be ween ou possible
esponses on a ou -poin Like scale (see Appendix II), and he ques ions we e exac ly
he same in all h ee cycles. This was because I wan ed o see i he e we e any no o ious
changes h oughou he s udy, especially a e he class discussion on pai wo k. The i s
h ee s a emen s in he ques ionnai e was o me o unde s and wha s uden s hough o
pai wo k ac i i ies and wha languages s uden s hough hey used du ing pai wo k. The
eigh o he s a emen s we e o s uden s o hink abou why hey did pai wo k ac i i ies.
3.2.3.3. Reco dings
The s uden s selec ed o he eco dings we e d awn a andom. I pu all s uden s’
names, whose pe mission om pa en s o gua dian’s names had been deli e ed o me, in
a bag and I chose wo names. Then I eco ded he s uden and hei espec i e pai , a e
making su e I had pe mission o include hem in my s udy.
3.2.4. Da a analysis
The da a was analysed by doing a compa ison o all ques ionnai es om he h ee
cycles. Fi s ly, I analysed all ques ionnai es answe ed om each cycle, men ioning he
ends om each ques ion. Secondly, I analysed he changes be ween all h ee
ques ionnai es, and las ly, I analysed di e ences om indi idual s uden s ha ha e
no o ious di e ences be ween hei ques ionnai es. I selec ed i e s uden s’
ques ionnai es o analyse based on hei pe o mance in class, wo s uden s we e
no o iously he bes s uden s in English class, wo s uden s we e a e age, and he o he
s uden had a poo pe o mance in class.
I analysed he eco dings by ansc ibing wha he s uden s ha e said on o pape ,
and hen wha each s uden said indi idually.

3.3. Resul s
3.3.1 In oduc ion
The ques ion o his esea ch was how we could make s uden s see he ele ance
o pai wo k in he English class oom, and hey we e asked o answe hones ly o hese
ques ionnai es. I was hoping s uden s would no ice and unde s and he impo ance o pai
wo k a e hey had an explana ion abou i , bu I also wan ed o see hei opinions on pai
wo k a e ha explana ion. As we can see abo e, his was done in a pe iod o h ee cycles.
The i s cycle was a pai wo k ac i i y ollowed by a ques ionnai e; he second cycle was
class discussion, ollowed by a pai wo k ac i i y, ollowed by a ques ionnai e; and he
hi d cycle was a pai wo k ac i i y ollowed by a ques ionnai e.
3.1.2. S ep 1 - Ques ionnai e 1 analysis

he i s Ques ionnai e (Table 1). The e we e a o al o 16 pa icipan s. Below we can see

The emaining ques ions ocused on unde s anding why s uden s hink hey do
pai wo k ac i i ies in he English class oom. 81% o s uden s unde s ood ha hey wo k
in pai s o imp o e hei ela ions wi h o he s uden s and wo k be e wi h hem. S uden s
did no seem o hink ha hey did hese ac i i ies o speak mo e L1 han L2, and 93% o
s uden s unde s ood ha pai wo k was used o hem o p ac ise wha hey we e lea ning
in class, and gi e hem mo e con idence in using L2 in eal-li e si ua ions. All s uden s
hough pai wo k ac i i ies we e un o mo e o less un, e en hough he answe s we e
dis ibu ed be ween “T ue” and “Mo e o less ue”; and las ly he majo i y hough he
objec i es o English class was o lea n how o communica e in English, which is he
pu pose o English classes se by Minis é io da Educação.
3.2.2. S ep 2 - Ques ionnai e 2 analysis
To his ques ionnai e (Table 2), he e was a o al o 17 pa icipan s. Be o e his
ques ionnai e was gi en o s uden s, he e was a class discussion in Po uguese on pai
wo k ac i i ies, i s abou ad an ages o pai wo k ac i i ies, why s uden s hough hey
did i , and how hey could bene i om i . I s a ed by asking he s uden s why hey
hough hey did pai wo k ac i i ies and I w o e down on he boa d answe s s uden s
we e gi ing. Then I asked i hey enjoyed doing pai wo k and all class ag eed o ha .

and s a emen se en ha ing 14 s uden s answe ing T ue), and ha pai wo k ac i i ies
we e o s uden s o p ac ice wha hey had been lea ning in class and o gi e hem mo e
con idence in day- o-day communica ion (s a emen 11 ha ing 64% o s uden s
answe ing T ue). The same pe cen age o s uden s hink we do pai wo k ac i i ies
because hey a e un, al hough he pe cen age o s uden s ha hink o he wise g ew. And
las ly, some s uden s clea ly changed hei opinions on he objec i es o he English class
being lea ning how o communica e using L2, since in ques ionnai e 1 all s uden s hough
his was ue, bu in ques ionnai e 2, 76% o s uden s hough i was T ue and wo s uden s
answe ed Mo e o less T ue, bu wo s uden s also answe ed False. This is an in e es ing

discussion, and a e I explained ha his was one o he easons why hey did pai wo k
ac i i ies.
3.3.3. S ep 3 - Ques ionnai e 3 analysis
To ques ionnai e 3 (Table 3), he e we e a o al o 14 pa icipan s. The e was no
a class discussion on pai wo k, and he ques ionnai es we e answe ed a e doing he pai
wo k ac i i y. E en hough he numbe o s uden s answe ing o his ques ionnai e
dec eased, he esul s we e no e y di e en ega ding answe s. As we can obse e
below, he majo i y o s uden s (78%) s ill enjoyed doing pai wo k ac i i ies; and eigh
s uden s answe ed T ue, ou answe ed Mo e o less ue, and only wo answe ed Mo e
o less alse when s a ing ha hey used mo e L2.
The e was also a no iceable change be ween using mo e L1 han L2 du ing hese
ypes o ac i i ies, wi h 57% o s uden s answe ing T ue o speaking mo e English
(s a emen 2), and also 57% o s uden s answe ing False o speaking mo e Po uguese
(s a emen 3). Howe e , on s a emen 2, 28% o s uden s also answe ed Mo e o less ue
and 14% o s uden s answe ed Mo e o less alse.
This ime, s uden s did no seem o hink pai wo k ac i i ies we e mean o he
