INTRODUCTION
The de elopmen o a bidi ec ional acous ic ag implies a signi -
ican ad ancemen in he ield o ish and unde wa e species
acking and moni o ing (e.g., Single base anscei e poin ange
calcula ion), imp o ing knowledge on he mo emen s and spa ial
beha iou s o hese o ganisms, and hus helping be e p o ec
hem om o e ishing and ano he human-caused endange -
men . This wo k aims o p o ide a highly modula and lexible
pla o m o de elop and implemen new communica ion algo-
i hms and p o ocols. Addi ionally, he pla o m has he capabil-
i y o be connec ed and con igu ed emo ely, which allows us o
connec i o he OBSEA unde wa e cabled obse a o y [1]. This
s udy is a con inua ion o he i s design and p oo o concep
p esen ed p e iously [2].
THE PLATFORM
ELECTRONICS
This i s encapsula ed e sion consis s o a basic unc ioning
acous ic ansmi e wi h ep og ammable i mwa e. This ollows
he p ocess low diag am shown in Fig.1, wi h h ee main blocks:
(A) communica ions and powe supply; (B) da a p ocessing and
I/O; and (C) signal condi ioning, ampli ica ion wi h a ce amic piezo-
elec ic elemen uned a 69 kHz.
COMUNICATION PROTOCOL AND FUNCTIONING
Fo communica ions and powe supply, a plug-and-play module
has been designed based on he Lan onixⓇ Xpo Ⓡ and a Di ec
Cu en (DC) powe supply con e e (DC o DC) isola ed b ick
om T acoPowe (model TEL 8-1210), swi ching he 9-18 V om
he base s a ion o he 3.3 V used in he ag’s sys ems. A cus om
communica ion commands p o ocol o e E he ne has been im-
plemen ed, his enables emo e au oma ion, con ol, and con ig-
u a ion wi h he LabVIEW applica ion designed. Communica ion is
di ided in o wo phases. Fi s , a e powe ing on he sys em, he
mic ocon olle expec s, du ing 30 seconds, a go o no-go om
he use o launch a ailo -made speci ic boo loade , o new i m-
wa e uploading. And i hose 30 seconds ha e passed, he second
phase s a s wi h he ou ine p og am loading p e-se alues and
wai s o a s a command o begin a con inuous 69 kHz emission.
I necessa y, he use can con igu e, ia es ablished commands,
one o he o he modes. The h ee modes a ailable in he cu en
i mwa e e sion a e he ollowing: (i) Con inuous Emi ing Mode
a a gi en F equency; (ii) Single Sho wi h a use -choice numbe
o pulses (e.g., 50 pulses a 69 kHz wi h a 3/3 powe le el); and
(iii) Pulse Posi ion Modula ion (PPM) wi h con igu able pulses and
s op ime.

ASSEMBLY AND ENCAPSULATION
The boa d con aining all h ee blocks has been assembled in a
longi udinal s ick o m ac o , his acili a es he encapsula ing
p ocess. The elec onics a e connec ed o Subconn (McCa -
ney Unde wa e Technology G oup, Denma k) connec o cable
h ough a wi e o an E he ne connec o (see Fig 2.). A igid plas ic
ma e ial s ip is added on bo h sides o educe bending and o -
sion ac ions, an epoxy-based esin is pou ed in hea sh ink ub-
ing, se ing as a mould and inal ou e mechanical p o ec ion. The
piezoelec ic elemen has i s own encapsula ion in a mo e igid
esin o enhance acous ic pe o mance [3].
RESULTS
The es s done in he Labo a o i d’Aplicacions Bioacús iques (LAB)
esea ch g oup pool acili y om he Uni e si a Poli ècnica de
Ca alunya (UPC) e ealed a ansmi ing powe o 145 dB e 1 uPa
a 3/3 powe d i e le el. This es also alida es he ope abili y o
ha ing a boo loade o change he i mwa e. Field es s ega ding
ange ha e been conduc ed in he OBSEA’s egion a 4 km o he
Vilano a i la Gel ú coas . Up o 220 m he signal could be ecei ed
by a comme cial uni and 340 m wi h he ins alled Hyd ophone
on he obse a o y a he sea loo (Fig. 2 Showing he las 255 m
app oxima ion o he hyd ophone posi ion).
CONCLUSIONS
This newly de eloped pla o m se ed as a baseline o es he
i s capabili ies o he ansmi ing sys em composed o he
piezoelec ic and he d i e , his is he i s s ep in de eloping a
majo es bed sys em o es he designs and new sys ems o de-
elop a bidi ec ional acous ic ag.
