The variability of strength production capacities during a judo contest

Abstract

Background. The muscular response of athletes in a judo contest is one of the most important aspect to measure with precision. Objective. Our purpose was to obtain and analyse the variability of strength associated to muscular performance parameters during a judo contest. Methods. Thirty-five men performed five 5-minute bouts with 15 minutes of passive rest. Immediately after each bout, muscular performance parameters were tested: countermovement jump (CMJ), maximal dynamic strength capacities (mean power velocity (MPV), mean strength (MS), maximum strength (MXS), mean power (MP) and maximum power (MXP)) in upper body, dominant (DHS) and non-dominant handgrip isometric strength (NDHS). ANOVA to compare baseline test data and successive bouts was used. Results. ANOVA revealed significant differences in NDHS (p<0.001), DHS (p<0.001), CMJ (p<0.001), MPV (p<0.001), MXS (p<0.001), MP (p<0.001) and MXP (p<0.001). No significant differences in MS (p = 0.008) were found. Some significant correlations between NDHS and ΔPMX (r=0.368, p=0.050), MPV and ΔMXS (r=0.528, p=0.001) and ΔMXP (r=0.683, p<0.001), MPX and ΔMXS (r=0.528, p=0.001) and ΔMP (r=0.877, p<0.001) were found. Conclusion. Due to judo contest can be considered a high intensity exercise, it produces an amount of muscular fatigue and therefore significant loss strength that it cannot be recovery during rest-times between successive bouts. For this reason, it was a high variability in strength production capacities, which are modified during a judo contest.

INTRODUCTION
An analysis o he speci ic demands o each spo is an indispensable s a ing poin o es ablish
and design in e en ion lines in aining [1]. Speci ically in judo, he unde lying idea is he possibili y
o de ea ing opponen s wi h g ea e physical s eng h [2]. Wi h his heo y, echnical excellence means
using s eng h, ine ia and body balance abili ies o he opponen agains hemsel es [3-5]. In
de eloping o g appling igh , one mus unbalance he opponen , and in execu ing h owing judo
echniques, high le els o muscula s eng h and endu ance a e equi ed, in ol ing he uppe and
lowe limbs [6]. Th owing echniques a e explosi e ac ions ha ea n sco es du ing he ma ch and
demand bo h lowe - and uppe -body powe [1]. The e o e, p o essional p epa a ion o judo ma ches
calls o he de elopmen o o ce and he dynamic and explosi e s eng h necessa y o pe o ming
h ows [7].
Analysing he speci ic leg ac ions in a judo ma ch, cons an explosi e eccen ic-concen ic
con ac ions (s e ch-sho ening cycle-SSC) [6] a e obse ed. This kind o ac ion gene a es a high
mechanical load, p oducing g ea s ess in muscle s uc u es [8]. In addi ion, judo ma ches may induce
a igue in he lowe limbs, which could p obably be de e mined by a es in ol ing SSC, such as a
coun e mo emen jump (CMJ) [9,10]. Thus, mos o he ma ch- ime is spen in g ip dispu es, equi ing
high le els o isome ic and dynamic s eng h-endu ance, especially in he o ea ms [11]. Speci ically,
he g appling dispu es du ing he ma ch a e main ained h ough o ea m s eng h endu ance [7], he
high in ensi y echnical ac ions execu ed o h ow he opponen a e ela ed o lowe -body muscle
powe [7,12], and immobilising mo emen s in ol e whole-body maximal s eng h [13]. Thus, judo
a hle es need o de elop a wide ange o s eng h abili ies o execu e he echnical ac ions needed o
sco e du ing a ma ch [2,7].
Acco ding wi h handg ip s eng h, one s udy [12] in es iga ed he in luence o 4 successi e
judo bou s o 5 minu es each one. In his s udy, a signi ican dec ease in maximal isome ic s eng h
was ound in bo h hands a e he hi d and ou h ma ches, compa ed wi h baseline alues. Ano he
s udy o h ee 5-min simula ed judo con es s showed ha a educ ion in s eng h occu s om he
second ma ch onwa d, which indica ed ha s eng h and endu ance a e po en ial p edic o s o judo
pe o mance [14,15]. Besides, some au ho s [16] de e mine he e olu ion o muscula pe o mance
pa ame e s du ing a judo con es , ob aining a loss s eng h pe cen age o 5.30% be ween he baseline
es and pos ma ch 1 es in maximal powe o uppe limbs. Subsequen ly, in an o icial compe i ion, i
was ob ained signi ican di e ences be ween p ema ch, pos ma ch 1 and 2 wi h pos ma ch 3 [7,12].
I is said ha CMJ can be conside ed as an absolu e indica o o lowe limb muscle powe [17]
due o independency wi h he body size cha ac e is ics. Rela ed o his capaci y, esul s o assessmen
in G eek junio na ional a hle es, as an indica o o his capaci y in judois o high le el, show
26.0 ± 4.2 cm in a CMJ [18]. Besides, some au ho s [6] ound a 3.6% (a e 2nd bou ) and 3.2% (a e
bou 3 d) o dec ease in CMJ alues du ing successi e judo bou s.
Se e al judo ac ions in ol ed o maximum dynamic s eng h (MDS) on judo con es [7,12,19].
This capaci y e e s o mo e, wi h a high demand o eloci y, an ex e nal load. In a compa ison
be ween Olympic and Pa alympic judo playe s, Olympic a hle es showed a highe alue in MDS [20].
Speci ically in a simula ed judo con es [1], i was ound a dec ease a e only a single judo bou in a
compa ison wi h he baseline es . Also, i was ob ained ha aining p og ams o 8 weeks wi h linea
and undula ing p o ocols induced simila dec ease in MDS du ing a simula ed judo con es wi h
3 ma ches [16].
Taking in o accoun some p e ious conside a ions [8], he e a e many ac ions wi h impo an
s eng h implica ions, which ake place in un a ou able me abolic condi ions. This is one example o
he high physical demands o a judo ma ch. Fo his eason, he p oblem s a emen o his s udy is he
necessi y o knows wi h accu acy he e olu ion o s eng h capaci ies du ing a judo con es . Thus, he
no el y o his s udy was he measu emen o muscula pe o mance pa ame e s du ing an en i e judo
con es and u he p ocessing o da a ocused on inding di e ences. The main pu pose o he cu en

capaci y. The hypo hesis is ha a judo con es will cause muscula a igue and impai s eng h
p oduc ion in bo h he uppe and lowe limbs, p oducing a iabili y in hese capaci ies.
METHODS
Expe imen al app oach o he p oblem
The cu en s udy consis s o a simula ed judo con es wi h i e 5-min successi e ma ches, and
15-min o passi e es be ween each one. When an ippon was sco ed, he ma ch con inued un il he
end o ma ch- ime, aking in o accoun o he simula ed judo con es p o ocols [16]. The simula ed
con es ook place a he end o he mesocycle immedia ely be o e (app ox. 2 weeks) an impo an
ou namen (such as he Na ional Championship, Eu opean Cup, e c.). A e amilia isa ion wi h he
physical i ness es , subjec s we e submi ed o a muscula pe o mance es immedia ely a e each
ma ch (a es - ime), consis ing o maximal dynamic s eng h (MDS), handg ip isome ic s eng h (HS)
and coun e mo emen jump (CMJ).
Pa icipan s
Thi y- i e male judo a hle es (age: 22.35±3.19 yea s; weigh : 76.23±6.22 kg; heigh : 173.7±3.4
cm; body mass index (BMI): 23.41 ±1.89 kg/m2; body a : 10.47± 4.98%; muscle mass: 64.03±5.83%)

es ablished in he Decla a ion o Helsinki (2013). Subjec s younge han 18 yea s old had o p o ide
his in o med consen signed by hei pa en s. The s udy was app o ed by he local e hics commi ee
and was conduc ed acco ding o he Eu opean Communi y’s guidelines o good clinical p ac ice
(111/3976/88; July 1990) and he Spanish legal amewo k o clinical esea ch on humans (Real
Dec e o 561/1993 on clinical ials). Fo de elop he simula ed judo con es , g oups o 6 judois we e
es ablished in a andomized way and aking in o accoun ha he e could no be a di e ence g ea e
han 10% in body weigh be ween he judokas o he same g oup.
All pa icipan s we e medalis s in he Na ional Championship in se e al age ca ego ies, and
had a leas 10 yea s o expe ience o judo and 4 yea s’ expe ience o judo compe i ions. As an
inclusion c i e ia, pa icipan s ained a leas 8 hou s pe week, being na ional medalis in he 2 yea s
p e ious o his s udy. On he con a y, as exclusion c i e ia, pa icipan s had no been inju ed o
mo e han one week in he 3 mon hs be o e he s udy. None we e in ol ed wi h any p og am o
weigh loss acco ding o o icial weigh ca ego y This ac could in e e e wi h he esul no only o he
con es , bu also o all es .

P ocedu es
The cu en s udy was a epea ed measu es esea ch ( igu e 1). In o de o ob ain he
muscula pe o mance impac , some s eng h pa ame e s we e assessed immedia ely a e each ma ch
(MDS, CMJ and HS). Judo a hle es we e di ided in o weigh g oups so ha he e was a di e ence in
body mass o less han 10% be ween a hle es in a g oup [1,21]. Pa icipan s pe o med all physical
es s one mon h be o e he simula ed judo con es in o de o become amilia wi h he es
p ocedu es. Also, on he day o he simula ed con es s hey comple ed all he es o his s udy as
a baseline e e ence. The p o ocol used was eplica ed in an o icial con es (weighing, wa m-up ime,
es - ime, e c.).
Pa icipan s pe o med a CMJ [1,21] in which hey we e equi ed o lex hei knees a a 90°
angle, wi h bo h hands on hei wais and hei legs shoulde -wid h apa . Th ee a emp s we e
pe o med, sepa a ed by 15 seconds o eco e y. The bes o hem was selec ed. The CMJ was eco ded
using he Op oGai sys em (Mic oga e, Bolzano, I aly), which has been used in simila s udies
[11,14,16,22,23].
A bench p ess exe cise was used o calcula e he mean powe eloci y (MPV), mean s eng h
(MS), maximum s eng h (MXS), mean powe (MP) and maximum powe (MXP) o he uppe limbs.
The exe cise was pe o med only once a e each ma ch o minimise a igue o pa icipan s. Bench
p ess is amilia o pa icipan s due o i is equen ly used in physical aining o comba spo s [24].
Pa icipan s we e equi ed o achie e an execu ion speed o a leas 1 m/s (60% o 1RM) [25-27] o
de e mine he load o he nex epe i ions [28]. The T-Fo ce Dynamic Measu emen Sys em (E go ech,
Mu cia, Spain) was used o quan i y bench p ess capaci y, as in simila s udies [29-31]. I is a dynamic
sys em o assessing and aining muscle s eng h and enables one o ob ain a di ec es ima e o load
shi eloci y in each epe i ion. The sys em au oma ically ecognises an eccen ic-concen ic phase as
a epe i ion.
The ecommenda ions o he HS measu emen om p e ious s udies we e conside ed in his
s udy [14,29,32-34]. A digi al hand dynamome e (TKK 5101 G ip D; Takey, Tokyo, Japan) was used o
eco d HS in kg. Op imum g ip was adjus ed acco ding o he calib a ion o mula gi en in p e ious
s udies [35-37]. Pa icipan s we e encou aged o achie e maximum handg ip s eng h. Th ee 5s HS
ials we e pe o med wi h each hand (dominan and non-dominan ), sepa a ed by 15 seconds o
eco e y; he bes esul was selec ed.
S a is ical Analysis
The da a we e analysed using SPSS e sion 19.0 o Windows (SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) and
he signi icance le el was se a p<0.05. The da a a e p esen ed as means and SDs. Le ene’s es and
he Shapi o-Wilk es we e used o con i m ha he da a we e no mally dis ibu ed. A one-way
epea ed measu es analysis o a iance (ANOVA) was used o compa e da a be ween p e- and pos -
es . Bon e oni’s es was used o pos hoc assessmen s o pai wise di e ences. O dinal
da a—RPE—we e assessed using he nonpa ame ic F iedman and Wilcoxon con as es .
Addi ionally, a Pea son co ela ion analysis was conduc ed. Inc eases in all a iables wi h he
di e ence be ween esul s in pos ma ch 5 and basal esul s we e calcula ed (∆).
RESULTS
Table 1 summa ises he esul s o epea ed measu es ANOVA o muscula pe o mance
pa ame e s and signi ican le es showed by p- alues and e ec size. pa ame e s. Signi ican
di e ences in NDHS and DHS we e e ealed. Pos hoc analysis con i med signi ican dec eases in
NDHS and DHS (Figu e 2). In pe cen ages, NDHS dec eased in 13.14% (Figu e 1) in ela ion o he
baseline es , and DHS dec eases in 11.29% espec o baseline da a. The Pea son es e ealed
signi ican co ela ions be ween NDHS and ∆PMX ( =0.368, p=0.050).

da a dec eased in 12.74% (Figu e 3).
Wi h ega d o MDS esul s, signi ican di e ences in MPV, MXS, MP and MXP (p<0.001 o all
o hem) we e ound. P alue o MS was 0.08, dec easing in 12.63% (Figu e 3) du ing successi e
ma ches. The Pea son es e ealed signi ican co ela ions be ween MPV and ∆MXS ( =0.528,
p=0.001) and be ween MPV and ∆MXP ( =0.683, p<0.001). A dec ease o 12.78% in MP was ob ained.
In MXS, he e was a dec ease o 6.42%. In MXP, a dec ease o 10.40% was ob ained. MPV dec eased
12.63%, co ela ing signi ican ly wi h ∆MXS ( =0.528, p=0.001) and ∆MP ( =0.877, p<0.001).
DISCUSSION
The pu pose o he cu en s udy was o ob ain he s eng h capaci y alues associa ed wi h
muscula pe o mance pa ame e s du ing a judo con es , showing pe cen ages o possible loss and he
e ec s on he capaci y o he p oduc ion o o ce. The main inding was ob aining he a iabili y o
s eng h p oduc ion capaci ies associa ed o muscula pe o mance pa ame e s, which showed ha
he e was a conside able decline du ing a judo con es . Wi h his inding, i can be said ha only 15

and lowe limbs, ob aining a high a iabili y du ing successi e judo ma ches.
Analysing p e ious s udies abou HS, one [35] epo ed a dec ease o 12.7% in handg ip
s eng h o he dominan hand a e one judo ma ch and a 15% a e ou judo ma ches. In o he s udy
a dec ease o a 5% was epo ed in HS a e he i s ma ch and 15% a e second ma ch [1]. In o he
s udy [14], i was ob ained a dec ease o 12.57% in he dominan hand in he i s ma ch and 14.80%
in he second ma ch o he same hand, while he non-dominan hand dec eased he alues a 10.25%
and 13.11% espec i ely, a guing ha he non-dominan hand eco e ed less be ween ma ches han
he dominan hand. I can be a gued ha HS is mo e speci ic o judo han maximal s eng h, because

simila loss pe cen ages (13.14% in he dominan hand and 11.29% in he non-dominan hand)
be ween he baseline es and successi e judo ma ches we e ob ained. Co ela ions show ha judo
a hle es wi h he highes alues in he non-dominan hand we e hose who de eloped he highes
peaks powe and s eng h. This can be explained by he speci ic ac ions done by his hand. Wi h hese
conside a ions, i seems ob ious ha a judo con es demands a high isome ic e o , accumula ing
a igue in he uppe limbs due o he isome ic e o du ing successi e judo bou s.
Acco ding o ou esul s, judo con es s cause a igue in he lowe limbs, as shown by he decline
in CMJ alues (12.74% a e bou 5 when compa ed wi h he baseline es ). Some au ho s [8,11] jus i y
simila dec eases due o he high load (eccen ic-concen ic) in speci ic judo ac ions on he lowe
limbs. The esul s o he cu en s udy con as wi h o he s ha ound no di e ence in his capaci y
a e only one bou [8] and a e 2 bou s [1]. Only one s udy [18] was ound an inc ease o 1.62% in
CMJ alues a e a judo ma ch. Ano he s udy [11] ob ained a lowe dec ease in his capaci y a e
ma ches o 0.93%, 3.62% and 3.20% in pos bou 1, 2 and 3, espec i ely. Along he lines o he cu en
s udy, co ela ions be ween muscula pe o mance pa ame e s show ha judo is a comple e spo ha
de elops no only uppe limbs bu also lowe limbs [35]. In lowe limbs, al hough judo ac ions ha
a ec hem a e mo e in e mi en han o uppe limbs, he high numbe o hese ac ions, hei ene gy
cos and he explosi e condi ions demanded o hem also causes a loss in muscula pe o mance.
Acco ding o hese esul s, i can be deduced ha successi e judo bou s ha e an impo an e ec on
he muscula pe o mance esponse o lowe limbs, wi h e ec s no only in powe p oduc ion bu also
in subsequen eco e y.
Simila o ou esul s, ano he s udy [8] ob ained loss pe cen ages in MDS pa ame e s,
speci ically in MP (3.21% in he cu en s udy e sus 6.20%, aking in o accoun an only bou ). A e
his s udy [35], i was ob ained a 5.30% dec ease in MXP alues be ween he baseline es and
pos bou 1. This dec ease in s eng h capaci y is ound in some muscula pe o mance pa ame e s
om bou 1 un il bou 5 (12.63% in MPV, 10.40% in MXP and 6.42% in MXP). Co ela ions show he
alidi y o execu ion eloci y as an indica o o peak powe and s eng h, acco ding o some au ho s
[21]. As is highligh ed by some au ho s [2,7] when well- ained judo a hle es a e s udied, i is
equen ly ound ha hey ha e highly de eloped dynamic s eng h and muscula endu ance. E en
wi h hese conside a ions, judo a hle es expe ience a dec ease in s eng h p oduc ion, showing
signi ican muscula a igue du ing successi e bou s.
CONCLUSION
Ou s udy highligh s ha a judo con es modi ied he s eng h capaci ies due o he signi ican
a iabili y ob ained in hese capaci ies, which becomes g ea e as he successi e ma ches un old. Judo
a hle es ha e o s a a bou wi h signs o muscula a igue p oduced in p e ious bou s, sugges ing ha
15 minu es o es - ime is no enough o eco e 100% o he muscula pe o mance capaci y.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS
Compa ed o baseline es s esul s, in his s udy, i can see ha he loss o muscula

coaches can ha e aluable in o ma ion abou he e olu ion o his capaci y in a judo con es o design
judo speci ic aining and compe i ion p og ammes. Also, a high quan i y o eedback will be
p opo iona ed as measu e o aining a each momen .
Wi h he aim o main aining high le els o muscula pe o mance pa ame e s du ing a judo
con es , s eng h endu ance aining p og ammes o uppe limbs a e ecommended. This should be
de eloped by some judo speci ic ac ions on judogi: main aining g ip wi h opposi ion, di e en ypes o
awls ellow (lying, esis ing, pulling, e c.), and ac ions in ol ing he mos muscle g oups as possible.
I is essen ial o blend his kind o ac ion wi h explosi e mo emen s whose execu ion is ca ied ou as
as as possible, as in a eal compe i ion. This las conside a ion can also be used o lowe limbs, wi h
a plyome ic s imulus ha p o ides po en ia ion wi h a imp o e in powe p oduc ion capaci y.
Taking in o accoun he high pe cen ages o loss in muscula pe o mance capaci y, u he
s udies could be conduc ed on he possibili y o using eco e y me hods du ing a judo con es a es -
ime be ween each ma ch, wi h he aim o main aining o dec easing he pe cen ages o s eng h loss
be ween ma ches. This way, u u e esea ch could in es iga e he e ec o di e en me hods o
eco e y: passi e o ac i e, wi h speci ic judo mo emen s and low loads.
