1 Desc ip ion o he expe imen
Goal o he COPS expe imen is o imp o e he Quan i a i e P ecipi a ion Fo ecas (QPF)
which has been s agna ed du ing he las 16 yea s due o a lack o comp ehensi e, high-
quali y da a se s usable o model alida ion as well as o da a assimila ion, hus leading
o imp o ed ini ial ields in nume ical models. An In ensi e Obse a ions Pe iod (IOP) is
he backbone o he P io i y P og am SPP 1167 o he Ge man Resea ch Founda ion
(DFG) by p oducing he demanded da a se s o unachie ed accu acy and esolu ion (see
Figu e 1-1). The Uni e si y o Bay eu h con ibu es wi h ou ene gy balance s a ions
(su ace in-si u), a Soda -Rass ins umen and a 9m Mas , who’s measu ing a angemen
