Terrius — "what else aš do I remember- ?" Here are a few examples: ichthyofauna, ichthyology, ichthyosaurs, iguanodonts, iguanas, marine fauna, sea cow, sea cabbage, sea lilies, sea lions. Is the principle of abandoning special terms specific to the geography of more distant countries being adhered to? After all, ichthyosaurs are only one of the extinct reptile families iš of the bird-like dinosaurs. be The listed representatives of marine fauna are definitely not something special that they should be mentioned specifically (the biology terms in this dictionary are only about a third). The list could go on. Even the possible excuse that it was decided not to include in the dictionary terms that are understandable to everyone is not appropriate here. If it is clear to all students what the term settlement means, it is also clear what is a town or a single village. ir | Thus, before starting to write a dictionary, it is necessary to know for whom, for what purposes it is intended, what volume it will be. If it is used for school, it is worth avoiding such interpretations of terms as gargždas “coarse fraction of loose and cemented rocks <...>” (perhaps the interpretation of DŽ “sea, river water broken, rounded stones” would be better). If it is not possible to include all the terms of the field in the dictionary, the necessary ones should be carefully selected according to abstraction, frequency of use, place in the structure of terms of the field. An alphabetical order of synonyms would be very useful; For example, a student finds the term isohypse in a textbook, but the dictionary does not explain it, and how does he know that in this case he must look for the interpretation at the horizontal. And if he found an arrow with the reference “Zr. horizontales”, there would be no misunderstanding. In addition, it is a real way to popularize Lithuanian equivalents of terms: the reader would notice that “a specially organized public sale, trade, periodically operating in a certain marketplace” is an auction, also called an auction, and not the other way around. In addition, the material of previous publications in this field should be used creatively. Then there would be no more such awkward terms as oscillating movements of the Earth’s crust, when in the Lithuanian translation of S. Agapov’s “Geography Dictionary” there are simply oscillations of the Earth’s crust. Therefore, in order for the dictionary to be really useful for students and others interested in geography, it should be improved, the idea of preparing such a publication is really good. | | jį o Jurgita JERINAITE II Stasio In Vaitekūnas’s “Encyclopedic Dictionary of Geography” (Kaunas, “Šviesa”, 96
1994) the articles are arranged one after another in alphabetical order of the headings. The headings are cross-referenced. Most of the dictionary articles containing international words in their titles are accompanied by etymologies. The dictionary is intended for secondary general education schools. As it is written in the preface, “unlike previous translation dictionaries and reference books (mainly from Russian), this dictionary has given up on highly localized (local) and special terms and concepts that are unnecessary for Lithuanian students and are characteristic of the geography of distant countries. Here more attention is paid to Lithuanian geography terminology” (p. 3). However, in contrast to this the author explains what is The African Development Bank, the Doha Plan, the European ir Coal and Steel Communitir y, etc. Be therefore, the dictionary contains terms with little su geographical relevance, e.g.: cholera “[gr. cholera < cholera — bile-+rheč — teku], acute infectious bowel disease <...>" (p. 34). (There is no reference to other diseases in this geographical dictionary. Why is the ši disease distinguished? ), wholesale kdina “the price at which a manufacturer sells his goods in large quantities to other enterprises, organisations or retailers. The wholesale price of a product is lower than its retail price paid by an individual buyer" už ka (p. 41), Retail kdyne “the price that the residents ka pay for už goods and ir services. Ji always higher wholesauž le prices" (p. 120), plywood “[vok. Furnier], sheet wood material. There is a broken, broken ir bridge. Glued plywood — 3-9 thin sheets ar of birch alder wood, glued together so that the directions of the wood fibers of the adjacent sheets are perpendicular. Glued in hot presses. Its thickness — 1-12 mm <...>" (p. 50), price ‘wage rate per unit of work. už Applicable in the case of a single pay system <...>” (p. 73), Peisisha “[lot. pension — payment, allowance), subsistence funds, regularly paid to the elderly or overworked (=worked) the statutory period People, disabled, family members, lost survivor" (p. 147). Well, that separately is explained, means ką elements bio-, geohydro-, but could be explained anthropo-, sub-. ir Ne all terms are clarified according to the general requirements of terminology ir language culture. The dictionary contains even Cases of disregard of the decisions of the State Language Commission, e.g.: (=natural) exchange, Liz in-gas (=long-term rental), spelling errors: fjord (=fjord). The term radiosonde instead would be more appropriate radiosonde. Ne one should use ne suffixes -inis adjectives, o genitive, e.g.: 97
ekonominė (=ekonomikos) reforma, valstybinės (=valstybés) pajamos, valstybinės (=valstybés) paskolos, va Istybinis (=valstybés) bankas, valstybinis (=valstybés) biudžetas, etc. 224 the term unified energy system (in Russian edunan snepeemuveckan cucmena). Next to it, there was an attempt to correct — the general energy system, but both these terms are bad. Instead of them, a common energy system would be appropriate. -. Incorrect terms are used in the interpretation of terms, for example, echo sounder “electronavigation (=electronic navigation) device for measuring the depth of the sea by ultrasonic waves <...>". Instead of the economic term capital investments (p. 89) in the geography dictionary, perhaps capital contributions would be more appropriate? o The dictionary contains very categorical but imprecise statements, for example, “International languages – English and French” (p. “Language”, p. 87); “The international languages are English and French” (p. “World languages”, p. 145). But are only ar these two languages considered international? no further evaluation of this dictionary has been undertaken. This time it was only concerned to show a few obvious inaccuracies. jo ir In 1993, the very needed explanatory translation dictionary "Pedagogical Terms" prepared by Prof. L. Jovaišas was published in 3000 copies by "Šviesos" publishing house. It is the first explanatory dictionary of pedagogy terms published in Lithuania, covering about 1000 more common terms of theoretical and applied pedagogy, its history and methodology. It was reviewed, pronounced and reviewed by linguists together with other scholars. The publication is useful for both researchers and lecturers, teachers and students preparing for teaching. The preface of the dictionary says that this “the first attempt to describe the concepts of ir human education in Lithuanian language” (p. 3). However, we had long ago, although only a couple of years earlier, the first time printed manuscript, unfinished prof. iš St. Šalkauskio! Jovaiša L. Pedagogical terms. London: Light, 1993. 264 p. 98
