J. Balčikonis' articles are interestiir ng now, they contain at least some Summary of ir topics relevant to current terminology work. Below we present J. Balčikonis' thoughts on terminology. The creation of new words, started by the first writers, has continued uninterruptedly throughout the ages ir and continues to this day. Iš writers, distinguished by the abundance of novels, just before "Aušros" times will be Daukantas. In his writings, he touched on a wide range of areas of cultural life, and in every area he made a considerable number of ir innovations. Say, when describing ko wars, he will have given almost all the terminology of war. The writers ir of "Aušra" somewhat later, who were particularly concerned about the purity of the language, worked on a lot of novels to express new concepts, to replace barbarisms. Iš of all the to writers of all times, the most deserving will be Jablonski, who contributed to the formation of terminology in almost all areas of our ir scientific practice. Today we constantly use feelings, su with which we have become so familiar that it seems to us that they are the most alive words, that no one has ever had jų to worry about them. Here are a few such Words: match, glasses, newspaper, train, bullet, school. Thus, the culprit Words, all kinds of terms, enter our everyday language, become an inseparable part of it. į nę Jų are many. But we have far more terms of the living language iš itself, which brought them to us from ancient iš times. Let us [...) take agricultural tools horse, harrows, wheels or ships, nets, clothes of people, foods how many terms — there are as beautifulir ly language would make up! Or take the human body itself, animal bird, how many terms of anatomy ar physiology — we will find there. Geography terms can ar be obtained from rivers, lakes, sea, mountains, etc. i ir G can almost indefinitely increase the names of v, insect plants. ir Thus, before the terms of the living language appeared the terms of the language, which were simply faked by looking at iš the foreign language į people, living in the list of š terms of the native language, adding the animals, birds, fish as culprit terms number is very small. o Moreover, the living spirit of our thinking, o ne os which is part of it, is clearer to us. 67
ir Therefore, it is understandable why a large number of rų newlanguages are rejected after some time. Iš to the lesson is that when making a term, we must first look at the living language, there we į will not find the right ar word. 1939 m. Our language and terminology // Balčikonis J. Selected Writings. V., 1978. T. 1. P. 164. Sometimes someone į turns to the Lithuanian language dictionary editor to obtain terms for some scientific purpose. Often the editorial cannot satisfy the to desire. The dictionary editor only selects ir words for to the adverb. Among its collections, of course, there is a considerair ble number iš of terms, some of which are necessary for various branches of science, — others for other matters of life. Most of the terms are culprits, but there is no ir shortage of living, iš borrowed from popular language. These terms are charactir erized by clarity and accuracy. There are many more terms in the folk iš language than — ne most of us think only of everyday life, but ir iš the field of science. Especially a lot of terms could be found in those sciences that are more related to the life of the people, say, medicine, law, agronomic. ir 1946. Collecting living terminology // Balčikonis J. Selected Writings. V., 1978. T. 1. P. 194. Our language is much richer than anyone might think. Worth more ja worry, worth collecting words. It is worth collecting not ne only for teachers, but for doctors, ir lawyers, agronomists, mathematicians, and all ir those who deal with people. su There are the greatest treasures of our iš language, there we can be ko another to pick up lively, beautiful terminology.
