Gina KAVALIŪNAITĖ KELETAS TO BE AMENDED DEADLINES 1. Ką what does the word presentation mean? The use of foreign words ir in international words often makes our language vague and inaccurate. ir Unnecessary use of presentation is one such — example. iš Į 66 The list of foreign words considered by the Lithuanian Language Commission, published in the "Language Culture" booklet, does not include this word. If we have good local equivalents, there is no need to borrow an international word. Latin origin word presentation (lot. praesento, -are “1. presented; 2. delivered") is available in many languages: angl. presentatio presentation, “1. introduction; 2. (gift) delivery; 3. Theater. pastalymas’; vok. Prūsentierung “1. offer; 2. presentation"; French. prėsetation “1. presentation, demonstration; 2. service, transfer; decoration; 3. delivery 4. (e.g. award)". For each meaning of this multi-meaning word we have good Lithuanian equivalents, so it is better not to use the presentation where necessary, say in Lithuanian more precisely ir and clearly: exhibition, showroom, o store, company — ir — ne presentation, o opening, presentation; here it would be appropriate to say the opening ir ceremony of the exhibition: the concert presentation, — ne the first o concert; presentation of the song; — book presentation, — introduction to the book. su Don’t forget that instead of presents we have a good Lithuanian word gift. It happens that, apparently, presentdcijq confused (pranc. representation “representation” citas (=representative visit, representative (=representative team). Where the idea can be more accurately expressed in Lithuanian, there will be no international words. 2. Ar can a medical center, where the functions of the system are restored after a disorder, be ne called a o rehabilitation center? jų on su representation ) is said ir presentational vivification), presentational team tina grips the patient orgagoma is maintained unchangedWord abilitation related to the usual term ir rehabilitation 41
(lot. rehabilitatio "recovery"). The latter is quite obvious, the prefix re-, meaning renewal of the action, repetition, lat. ir ir habilitas, -atis “suitability, ability". Since the functions of the patient are not renewed in this centre, but only maintained, the name rehabilitation o centre is logically appropriate here. But it would be better to call such a center in Lithuanian: sveikūtos palaikymo centras. 3. How to name a round muffin-shaped toy for children with teething teeth so that they should chew? su ką Tą Let's call the toy a cripple. 4. Ar can you say interest-free loan, visa-free entry? Pagal “Lithuanian language grammar” (V., 1994, 215 p.) suffixes -inis adjectives can be made of prepositional constructions: iš pre-notification, postpositional keličnė, international relations. Adjective-prepositional adjectives have a meaning depending on both components, distinguish the marked objects and indicate the type, e.g. interstellar nebulae. ir jų Adverbs -inis derivatives should not be used terminologically with the su prefix be-: e.g., asymptomatic (=asymptomatic) form of disease (see section 4.4). : “Terminology corrections” V., This is 1992). corrected ir “Language Practice Tips”. Thus, in this case, the most suitable prefix derived interest-free loan, visa-free entry. We can say loan procenty, ir entry visa. be be Instead of interest-free loan The “Terminology corrections” propose to use the term interest-free loan. S. Criminogenic, criminological ar state of crime, situation? These words are used in crime reports, but they are perfectly appropriate, even though ne the words themselves are quite good. jų Let's analyze each iš jų values. The ir criminology of crime is the criminology of iš crime. crimen, criminis ‘crime’, Gr. genos “family, origin" ir gr. logos "Word, concept, science". So criminogenic means “criminal, arising in violation of permissible norms, of a criminal nature”, cf. autogenic, carcinogenic. Although neither Dictionary of Modern Lithuanian Language ( V., no 1993), "International Dictionary of Words" ( V., the word 1985) criminogeninis is not presented, it is quite correct to use, only not ir to be presented in this word combination. Criminology is — the science that studies crime, its 42
causes, and prepares measures to prevent crime. To indicate belonging to a particular field, in this case the science of criminology, it is better to use the descriptive causative than the suffix -inis: criminology methods, criminology situation, etc. When we hear the term "situation", we understand that we are talking about the situation or circumstances of the event itself. Thus, in the above-mentioned case, when publishing a criminal chronicle, none of the listed signs of this compound is appropriate. Here it is better to use the state of crime, situation, criminal situation. The abstract noun criminality "forbidden by law, punishable, unlawful", denoting a detached, abstract characteristic, is appropriate here. In this case, you can also use the word kriminalinis, generalized compound suffixes of international words -aline derivative. 43
