JOURNALISM IR BOOK STUDIES ENCYCLOPEDIAS DEADLINES 1997 m. encyclopedic publications appeared almost at the same time: the du Vilnius University Institute of Journalism prepared ta The Encyclopedia of Journalism! (hereinafter — ZE) the ir encyclopedic dictionary of book studies prepared by the Department of Book Studies of this university? (hereinafter referred to as — KEŽ). The latest publication published under The State Programme for the 450 Anniversary of the Year of the First Lithuanian Book. Both books are very beautifully published. The volume of publications varies considerably: KEŽ consists of 2006 various articles in alphabetical order, of which iš 1035 (about half) are interpretations of terms in this field, covering o ZE about articles, 6000 the term iš interpretations are nų correspondingly more. In this article, we discussed ir the questionable me terms (without taking definitions, although they jų are far from objectionable) presented in the aforementioned ne be publications. The use of these encyclopedias is complicated by the fact that they are both untranslated. For this reason, a frequent reader may encounter difficulties in spelling su terms, especially international ones, which make up a large part of the terms in these publications. Also, the origin of all ne international terms is indicated, e.g.: autograph jų (ZE 44); autotype (ZE photo 45); landscape, photo portrait, photo review (ZE 136); photoreducer, photoreport, photojournalist (WITH line 137); spacingZas (KEZ 132); housing (KEZ 204); Textology (KEZ 365); typographer, typography (ZE triplex 522); (ZE 526) ir kt Pastebéta gera KEZ provision if the term is — called an international Lithuanian term, most ir often preference is given to the Lithuanian (it is written first; other, less common international be terms are presented with ar references to Lithuanian terms). su į However, there are some inaccuracies and inconsistencies. For example, the term stamp is given (p. 339) (without international stamp synonym) ir the following 3 jo meaning, for 0 the term stamp (p. 360) provided by ! the Journalism Encyclopedia. V.: Prada, 1997. 606 p. * The Encyclopedia Dictionary. V.: Alma littera, synonym 1997. 413 p. 143 stamp definition, ir duplicate (only not specifying) the interpretation of the previously given term stamp 1-th meaning. The term defisas is accompanied by the Lithuanian term brūkšnelis (p. 87), but the latter is not even put apart. Meanwhile, in our spelling terminology, the real term is only a dash. Term bilingual publication (p. 67) has a reference to į the term (more representative synonym) bilingual publication, but the term trilingual publication (p. 372) does not have such an indication; jo the trilingual publication in the article is ne presented as a o synonym, as an interpretation of the meaning. Also next to the term hinge (p. 356) required ir Lithuanian word lankstas. More information about the synonymy of terms ŽE should be given. Attention should be drawn to a į couple of su points ir jų relating to synonyms. Firstly, although this encyclopedia sometimes also tries to give preference to Lithuanian terms, but there are much more frequent cases when in addition to international (or su international accent) terms should be given Lithuanian ir synonyms, e.g.: adapteris (p. 9) — a sound sensor; definition (p. 101) — definition; lexicon (p. 269) — a glossary; server (p. 448) — the control unit; scanner (p. 452) — scanner, scanning device; multimedia (p. 342) — a multimedia medium; stamp (p. 494) — the stamp; Video recorder (p. 555) — video recorder etc. ir By the way, ŽE perhaps it ir would not be appropriate to propose the unfamiliar term vertiklis as the Lithuanian synonym for the term modemas (p. 334), although next to the ir latter in parentheses is written angl. modem — converter. Secondly, ZE the existing synonyms of terms are printed in bold as the ir main terms and, depending on the ratio to the capitalized main term, in upper or lower case su letters (here it should only be added that the terms hectograph, hectography (p. 161) are not synonyms). However, there are more frequent cases when the synonym is somehow assigned to the interpretation of the meaning of the term, i.e. an international term is interpreted by a Lithuanian synonym or vice versa. As already mentioned at the beginning, the ZE provides a lot of up-to-date information, as well as new terms (including new media (p. 584)). However, there are jų some ir unusable foreign words, e.g. briefing (= brief meeting, brief press conference) (p. 73); daigest (= (periodical) review; summary 144 (p. 93; KEZ 84); content (= analysis (p. 241); mixer converter) (= (p. 329) ir kt Some of these terms (e.g. digest) The State Commission for the Lithuanian Language has classified it among the major language errors. True, some of the referenciš es given by these adulterers su see. (perhaps intended to show unpresentabiljų ity), but unpresentable terms are usually marked with a certificate ntk. (yes ir In this case, o the reference is to a synonym. In this encyclopedia, also ir Because there are some non-new ir foreign words to be corrected, e.g.: bzacas indent, paragraph) a (= (ZE exlibris 9); in exlibris) (= (KEŽ 97); forced (= front page) (ZE 133; KEZ 107); hartas (= kiečius) (ZE 161; KEZ 124); kolontitulas (= puslapiné heading) (KEZ 201); falcons (= lanksté) (ZE262); folding (= folding) (ZE 262); KEZ 105); rapidas (= rapid phonogramy transcription; fast motion filming) (OJ 418); preprint of (= future publication) (ZE 401; KEZ reprint) 298); (= - (ZE 425;KEZ 310); tonfilmas (= garsinis filmas) (ZE 524) ir kt Salia of some spoken language professionalisms (e.g., grandmother (NOT fresh 69); head (ZE noticed 498)) semanticalir ly inaccurate terms, e.g. apmirimas (= slopinimas) (ZE 28); yearbook, annual (= publication) (ZE 325; KEZ press 257); repertoire press visit) (= (KEZ 343) i ir kt The generic ŽE elements of some of the presented compound terms should have noun forms, e.g.: adekvatus, autorizuotas, laisvas (adequate, authorized, free) translation (= (ZE hard 554); hard) (= drive (ZE official 222); official) (= newspaper (ZE light, 364); black, narrow, normal, wide, straight light, black, (= narrow, normal, wide SIS, straight) font (ZE 494) ir kt On the other hand, the writing of noun forms should be considered as hypernormalisms KEŽ in cases such as: free free) publication (= (p. 271); (purchased) book (= (p. 274) ir kt Also, sometimes adjective suffix should be used for je adjective adjective naming a place-species element su -inis, -inė, e.g.: repeated repeated) release (= (ZE 374); perforated Ji (= perforation)in the stripta (KEŽ.288); : perspective perspective)bibliography (= (KEŽ 145 290); retrospective (= retrospective) bibliography (KEŽ 312) etc. However, often the adjectives of the above mentioned suffix, which are in the compound terms, should be replaced by the noun's pronoun, e.g.: autorinė (= autoriaus) teisė (ZE 45); publishing (= publishing) firm (KEŽ 215); publishing (= publishing) organisation (OJ 267); publishing (= publishing) law (ZE 267); publishing (= publication) data (ZE 267; KEZ 215) etc. Although the terminological inaccuracies we have mentioned here are minor, they could easily have been avoided.
