International Terminology Information Centre (International Information Centre for Terminology) (INFOTERM) ir Lithuanian Language Institute (LKI) COOPERATION THE CONTRACT Institute of Lithuanian Language (LKI), csantis P. Vileišio g. 5, LT-2055 in Vilnius, Lithuania (hereinafter referred to as LKI is ir represented by its Director, Dr. Jolantos Zabarskaitės), International Ir Terminology Information Centre (International Information Centre for Terminology), esantis Aichholzgasse 6/12, A-1120 in Vienna, Austria (hereinafter referred to as INFOTERM, ir represented by its Director, Dr. Christian Galinski), considering that į LKI ir INFOTERMAS supports the communication and dissemination of knowledge ir among professionals by promoting cooperation in the field of terminology, so that organizations of professionals from different fields can improve ir jų the production of reliable multifunctional terminology in support of a global multilingual information society; Considering that this objective ir should be achieved by providing information on terminology activities, as well į as by recording and disseminating data on terminology publications and existing terminology e resources, by promoting the further development of a global network of terminology documentation centres, by ir establishing electronic communications between the institutions of ir organisations that actively collect and disseminate e terminology information, by providing information and sharing experiences on harmonised methods and recommendations ir for the establishment and management of terminology documentation centres, and by ir developing high-quality terminology systems; taking ir into account that the LKI, founded in nę 1939, aims to e 180 develop lexicology. lexicography and study the grammatical structure of the Lithuanian language and the functioning of the language in society, e study the history of the Lithuanian language, the vocabulary and dialects, conduct sociolinguistic studies,. to collect language data and publish the results of scientific work, and to the fact that in 1952 the Institute began to work on terminology, which aims to investigate the history and current state of littuviy terminology, to establish the principles and norms of littuviy terminology, to participate in the preparation of terminology dictionaries and to standardize Lithuanian terminology; Considering that INFOTERMAS was established in 1971 by an agreement between the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Austrian Institute of Standards (ON) and transformed in 1996 into an international non-profit association with the objective of being a framework for cooperation between international, regional and national terminology organisations and institutions (in particular officially recognised terminology documentation centres and terminology planning institutions) as well as among specialized organisations and institutions engaged in terminology work and authoritative in their field, to collect information on terminology activities and their results, to advise, in particular international intergovernmental or non-governmental organisations as well as public bodies and non-profit organisations on the multilingual aspects of specialized information and documentation, the application of harmonised principles and methods, as well as the organisation of exemplary terminology work and other terminology activities, and, above all, 181 e to support and promote cooperation in the field of terminology with a view to accelerating the development of multilingual and multidisciplinary terminology infrastructures; with a view to developing an efficient structure for terminological cooperation, have concluded the following agreement: Article 1 LKI and INFOTERMAS agree to assist each other in: promoting cooperation in the field of terminology at national, regional and international level; e to inform regularly about its activities; e promote terminology training; + to exchange icide and provide mutual assistance in their release; + —to organise meetings, conferences, other events and, when necessary or useful, joint events; e to exchange views on a regular basis on the possibility of commercialising certain information through networks or in published form; e offer each other the most favourable conditions; * link the websites of both organisations with mutual links. Article 2 Specific areas of cooperation 2.1 INFOTERMAS supports the LKI terminology activities and provides assistance where necessary and possible. 2.2 LKI and INFOTERMAS shall cooperate in developing and supporting terminological cooperation infrastructures and networks of terminology centres. In view of this, the LKI particularly supports the development and implementation of terminology strategies and activities in the Baltic States. 2.3 LKI and INFOTERMAS cooperate at 182 international level in standardisation structures where methodological standards relating to terminology as well as information and documentation are discussed. 2.4 LKI and INFOTERMAS promote and support the following global terminology organizations: e International Network for Terminology (TermNet) — for the development and promotion of the terminology market, e Association for Terminology and Knowledge Transfer (GTW) — for standardized applied terminology research, + International Institute for Terminology Research (IITF) — for fundamental terminology research as well as terminology training, e ISO Technical Committee ISO/TK 37 Terminology and other language resources. 2.5 The LKI shall assist INFOTERM in collecting information relating to terminology publications and terminology activities by providing INFOTERM with a regular copy of all its terminology publications in exchange for INFOTERM publications. 2.6 INFOTERMAS shall endeavour to make its data available to the LKI through information networks and to provide its data sets and information services to the LKI under the most favourable conditions. 2.7 LKI and INFOTERMAS mutually support each other’s conferences. 2.8 LKI supports the development, planning and implementation of a regular terminology training system and the training of terminology consultants. INFOTERMAS assists LKI in implementing terminology training programmes and organizing terminology consulting seminars whenever necessary or important. 2.9 LKI and INFOTERMAS seek to join (jointly or separately) joint research and development activities funded under existing bilateral or multilateral cooperation agreements at national and regional level or supported by influential intergovernmental or non-governmental organisations. Article 3 Membership LKI is an associated member of INFOTERM. 4 Article Entry into force and duration of the Agreement This Agreement shall be in force for an initial period of two years from the date of its signature by both Parties and shall be automatically renewed unless terminated by either Party with three months' notice before the end of the year. In any case, the agreement shall cease to be effective upon termination of the membership in LKI or upon conclusion of a new agreement by both parties. 5 Article 2 Work plan A more specific plan shall be drawn up separately and shall be attached to this contract. Further action plan is envisaged in ongoing consultation between the two parties. 6 Article Supplementary agreements and amendments Both parties may conclude any supplementary agreement which they deem necessary for their cooperation. Such a contract should be concluded separately and attached to this contract. All annexes and amendments to this agreement, in particular those relating to finances, staff and the status of cooperation partners, must be agreed in writing. On behalf of the Lithuanian Language Institute On behalf of the International Terminology Information Centre Dr. Christian Galinski, Ph.D. 184 Appendix Draft work plan INFOTERM and LKI cooperation agreement 2003-2005 1. the LKI provides INFOTERM with: . bibliographic data on dictionaries, thesauri and classifications containing Lithuanian data, and the publications of this type themselves, as far as possible, so that INFOTERM can serve as a repository of terminology in various languages and documentation on an international scale; regular information on terminology activities, Lithuanian publications and other production. 2. INFOTERMAS provides LKI with: information on terminology publications and available terminology resources; information on harmonised methods and recommendations for the establishment and management of terminology documentation centres and for the development of high-quality terminology; information on the development of the standardisation system in which INFOTERMAS is involved, when considering methodological standards relating to terminology, thesauri and classifications; regular data on terminological information documentation (for internal use). 3. LKI shall regularly provide INFOTERM ir with terminology publications published by the Institute in exchange for INFOTERM publications. 4. The CCI and INFOTERMAS shall cooperate through participation in research and development activities funded under existing bilateral and multilateral cooperation agreements at national, regional and international level or supported by influential intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations. 5.
