Trijų Baltijos valstybių terminologijos seminaro deklaracija

The participants in the seminar “Terminology work now and in the future in Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia: plans for cooperation in the context of the EU states”, organized by the State Language Commission of the President of the Republic of Latvia for the three Baltic States — Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia, + having heard the ideas expressed in the main presentations of the participants of the seminar from the three Baltic States; + aware of the essential importance of harmonised, clear terminology both for internal development and for successful cross-border cooperation; + Understanding that broad sections of society should be involved in solving urgent terminology issues, and on the other hand, seeing at present a destructive lack of terminological competence (including among specialists in various fields); + updating the tasks already highlighted by the 2002 Brussels High-Level Terminology Meeting, call on their Governments to support terminology infrastructures and to promote the development of terminology policy as part of the overall language policy, in particular through education and information programmes, and by ensuring the necessary funding. This means: + promote the widespread implementation of harmonised terminology in official use, the development of automated term databases and their free wide availability; + Ensure better teaching of the basics of the state language in the system of primary and general secondary education; + to introduce a compulsory specialized language and terminology course in all vocational education programmes, thus promoting the terminological competence of young professionals for work in national as well as EU structures; + establish a joint regional cooperation centre for translation, terminology and terminography in the three Baltic countries, supported by the EU Commission Translation Services Agency in Latvia. If these areas are neglected, it is foreseen that there will be major difficulties in ensuring that EU Member States act together to achieve common objectives for the benefit of the peoples of EU Member States.
