194 Aušra Rimkutė | Scientific Scientific conference Language theory and practice AUŠRA RimKUtĖ Institute of Lithuanian Language On November 9, 2007, the Department of Language Culture of the Language of the Faculty of Humanities of Kaunas University of Technology, together with Institute of Kaunas University of Technology and the Department of Linguistics the Centre for Terminology, organized a scientific conference entitled “Language Theory and Practice”. The conference was opened by Jurgita Mikelionienė, Head of the Department of Linguistics, and Prof. Giedrius Kuprevičius, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities. Two reports were read in plenary. Aldona Paulauskienė, Professor of the Department of Linguistics, Kaunas University of Technology, will present her thesis on Oppositions and their neutralization in the paradigms of grammatical categories. According to the speaker, the search for oppositions in paradigms is a principle established by general linguistics for the description of language phenomena. Intelligently applying the principle of oppositions in morphological descriptions, it is possible to easily solve problems that are difficult to solve at first glance. A. Paulauskienė spoke more in detail about the grammatical categories of the verb – person, condition, kind and object, since the members of all these categories paradigms are related by oppositional relations, the opposition of the designator and the undesignated member is visible in all categories. Jurgita Girčienė (Vilnius Pedagogical University) in her presentation New words in translated literature: choices and discrepancies examined new words in fictional texts translated into Lithuanian from 1990 to 2006. She distinguished two main problems of naming new realities with new words. The first is related to the competition of new foreign words and their equivalents expressed in new compound names or new forms, the second is related to the adaptation of new foreign words. After the plenary session, the work continued in two sections. One section was devoted to terminology and translation problems. Aušra Rimkutė (Institute of Lithuanian Language) read a presentation on the organization of the terminology of religion in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. According to the speaker, Lithuanian terminology of religion is one of the oldest Lithuanian terminology. Late 19th century– conference Theory of Language... Terminology | 2007 | 14 195 At the beginning of the 20th century, there was concern about the language of religious writings, and the terminology of religion became very unclean. Especially important was the work of the Potters Commission established in 1909, when in cooperation with clergymen and linguists, the Potters language of more important prayers was arranged, most of the foreign terms were replaced with Lithuanian ones, leaving only those that do not have equivalents in Lithuanian to be used. The presentation of Diana Šilobritaitė (Institute of Lithuanian Language) Synonymy of terms in mathematics textbooks of the first half of the 20th century is devoted to mathematical terminology. According to the structure and origin, she discussed synonyms of terms in early and mid-20th century mathematics textbooks, pointed out that the terminology of this field is not old, and the period under discussion was very important in the development of school mathematics terminology. Dalia Masaitienė (Vytauto Didžiojo University) in her presentation Influence of English on the formation of linguistic terms examined the importance of English in the formation of the latest Lithuanian linguistic terms. She discussed the new English loanwords and their adaptation in Lithuanian, also examined some of the most characteristic tendencies in the use of linguistic terms, showing the influence of English, named some cases of synonymy of terms and discussed their reasons. The speaker relied on new linguistic works and scientific articles. Virginija Stankevičienė (Kaunas University of Technology) talked about synonymy and variantity of Lithuanian and international terms in economic terminology. Using the Dictionary of Economic Terms (R. Vainienė, 2005), scientific articles and textbooks, she discussed the origin of single-word and compound economic terms, as well as synonyms. Vilija celiešienė (Kaunas University of Technology) read the presentation Computer loanwords and their equivalents. The aim of the paper is to analyze the usage tendencies of computer loanwords and their Lithuanian equivalents in the language of students and to identify the factors determining their choice. The data of the questionnaire show that computer terms are used much more frequently than their Lithuanian equivalents: 60.5% of respondents use borrowed terms, and only 39.5% of respondents use Lithuanian terms. The choice of foreign words is mainly determined by their usualness, convenience and comprehensibility, and normativity is not an important factor. Judita Džežulskienė (Kaunas University of Technology) discussed the word order in structures of compound terms. When translating or forming compound terms, the question arises as to what should be the order of the elements, therefore, according to the speaker, it is appropriate to analyze the structural configurations of such compounds, and it is also important to determine the word order tendencies in terminology. 196 Aušra Rimkutė | Scientific conference Theory of language... J. these terms consist mainly of one noun and two elements that describe it. Asta Mitkevičienė and Albina Auksoriūtė (Institute of Lithuanian Language) presented the terminology portal www.eurotermbank.com, which is the result of the EuroTermBank project (collection of European terminology resources in cooperation with terminology institutions) carried out by seven countries (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Hungary, Germany and Denmark) in 2005-2006. It is a European term bank, where Lithuanian terms can be found alongside Latvian, Estonian, Polish, Hungarian, English and other languages. It currently contains more than 1.5 million terms in various fields, over 600,000 term articles. The new terminology portal will be useful for translators, terminologists, editors, etc., as well as for organisations and individuals wishing to make their term sets publicly available. Gintautas Grigas (Institute of Mathematics and Informatics) in his presentation The specifics of software interface translation and adaptation discussed the specifics of software interface with humans (windows, menu items, command names, computer messages), which leads to their translation peculiarities. According to him, it is not only necessary to translate the text, but also to adapt it so that it accurately represents the action of the program. Experience with localization of open source and commercial applications has shown that these problems can be overcome by translating creatively, using translations into other languages, and performing comprehensive testing of the entire localization. Erika Rimkutė and Jolanta Kovalevskaitė (Vytauto Didžiojo University) presented the paper Machine translation and/or language culture?, which also addressed translation problems arising from automatic translation of texts into Lithuanian. Other speakers on translation issues included Eglė Kontutytė, lecturer at the Department of German Philology at Vilnius University (Legal forms of companies: problems of equivalence of German and Lithuanian terms), Sigita Stankevičienė, lecturer at the Department of Linguistics at Kaunas University of Technology ((Non-)translation of international words) and Aurelija Leonavičienė (Translation of French divergent syntactic constructions from a stylistic perspective), Janina Liatukaitė, lecturer at Vytautas Magnus University (English legal institutions and positions: translation or perception?), Vitalija Liutvinskienė (Translation of means of connection into Lithuanian), Professor Milda Danytė (Changes in literary translation norms after 1990), Associate Professor Irena Ragaišienė (Peculiarities of addressee and recipient forms and the significance of intertextuality in the translation of Helen Fielding’s novel “Bridžita Jones’ Diary” into Lithuanian). Vitas Labutis (Vilniaus University) read a presentation Bepersonal sentences in English and Lithuanian, carmen caro (Vilniaus University) – The problem of the verb time category in translation from Spanish to Lithuanian and from Lithuanian to Spanish. Semantics of Past Tense. The presentation of Saulė Juzelėnienė (Kaunas University of Technology) and Ilona Sideravičiūtė-Mickienė (Kaunas Faculty of Humanities, Vilnius University) will be on the subject of the expression of grammatical tenses in the scientific discourse of English and Lithuanian. The presentation of Dana Švenčionytė (Kaunas University of Technology) on Structural types of syntactic predicates, their morphosyntactic expression and the problem of analyticality in English and Lithuanian also deals with syntax problems. Asta Kazlauskienė and Gailius Raškinis (Vytauto Didžiojo University) presented Principles of creating spoken language sounds in their presentation. They presented the Vytauto Didžiojo University methodology of collecting spoken language sounds, preparing them for publication on the Internet, transcription, linguistic and non-verbal marks. Presentation by Inga Bertašienė (Vilnius College), Vaida Buivydienė and Regina Žukienė (Vilnius Gediminas Technical University) – Distance learning course “Specialty language culture” and the realities of its application. At the end of the conference, a discussion was held on Teaching the language of specialty in higher education institutions: dissemination of experience, in which Jurgita Girčienė, Regina Žukienė, Virginija Stankevičienė, Vilija celiešienė, Saulė Juzelėnienė, Judita Džežulskienė, Erika Rimkutė, Asta Kazlauskienė participated.
