Terminology | 2008 | 15 251 International Conference on Lexicology and Terminology: Theory, Practice, History, to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of John Kruops ROBERTAS STUNŽINAS Institute of Lithuanian Language The 100th anniversary of the birth of John Kruops was the focus of the the Lithuanian Language Institute on 23–25 April 2008. 21 speakers from national conference Lexicology and Terminology: Theory and Practice, held at Lithuania and abroad presented their papers on terminology topics. During the plenary session, Prof. V. Skujinia (Institute of Latvian Language, University of Latvia) spoke about the similarities and differences between lexicology and terminology and their branches – lexicography and terminology. This should help to clarify the problems related to the role of various elements of the terminology language. Prof. habil. dr. S. Grinevas-Grinevičius (Balstogė University) read a report on lexicography and terminology. Recently, the attitude to general and special lexicon has changed, the differences between these areas are disappearing. Comprehensive translation dictionaries can reveal the peculiarities of national terminology. Working with translation dictionaries, it is possible to establish formal criteria for semantic deviations in the translation of terms, limits of polysemantic and homonymy, partial and absolute synonymy without experiments. The problems of Hungarian national and borrowed terminology were discussed by A. Foris (University of Western Hungary). In the 18th and 19th centuries, loanwords were used only in exceptional cases. The Hungarianization of words continued until the middle of the 20th century, when Hungary experienced significant influence from the Soviet Union. After joining the European Union, difficulties were caused by the fact that Hungarian has very few international terms. This is particularly difficult for Hungarian translators. A. Kaulakienė (Vilnius Gediminas Technical University) and E. Makariūnienė (Institute of Physics) presented the normative aspect of four physics terminography prints. The beginnings of standardization can already be found in the bilingual Physics Terms Dictionary by P. Brazdžiūnas. The normative aspect of the 1979 quadrlingual Physics Terms Dictionary is particularly obvious.
252 I. Druce (National Terminology Centre of Moldova) spoke about the factors of emergence of new words and aspects of their creation in Moldova. The presentation by Latvian terminologists J. Borzov (University of Latvia, Riga Institute of Information Technology) and I. Ilzina (Riga Institute of Information Technology) listed the problems caused by English borrowings in Latvian IT terminology. R. Andžius (Institute of Mathematics and Informatics) presented the features of computer structuring of terms dictionaries articles. The main difficulties in uploading the glossary text to the computer database are due to the completeness of the glossary, terminology, heading terms, punctuation and references inconsistency. Antonyms found in textbooks of Lithuanian literary theory from 1922 to 1942 are discussed in the report by A. Mitkevičienė (Institute of Lithuanian Language). The basis of the antonym of terms is the dichotomy of concepts and binary division. Therefore, contradictory oppositions are more common than contradictory. The literary science of the period under consideration is characterized not only by its own antonyms, but also by the antonym of the general language foundation. S. Ovseichik (T. Shevchenko National University of Kiev) examined the issues of Ukrainian ecological terminology borrowings. The independence of the science of ecology leads to the fact that debts in the terminology of Ukrainian ecology can be direct and indirect. Terms derived from foreign-language lexicons show that an important indicator of the lexical assimilation of a borrowed term is its usage activity. L. Piete (Institute of Latvian Language of the University of Latvia) presented the Latvian and Lithuanian eponymous plant names made from anthroponyms and toponyms, their formation methods, differences and similarities. There are several ways of producing eponymous plant names, but mixed forms are also common. Plant names can be made both in the language itself and taken as derivatives. N. Jacenko (Institute of Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences) read a report on the development of Ukrainian military terminology. Since the 19th century, the Ukrainian language has had many lexical and phraseological means of expressing the concepts of war. The systematic nature of these measures allows us to speak about an organized system of military terminology. The terminology of warfare of the period under consideration is characterized by old lexicon, borrowing of foreign elements, phonetic and constructive variation, synonymy. R. Stunžinas (Institute of Lithuanian Language) introduced the 1910–1937 period. Robertas Stunžinas | TarptautinėkonferencijaLeksikologija ir...
Terminology | 2008 | 15 253 scientific publications in Lithuanian construction terminology. The researched terminology consists of terminated ordinary vocabulary, semantic derivatives and derivatives. In terms of the terminology of the current construction, a significant part of the termology under consideration has been preserved to this day, although there are a number of outdated terms. The approach of Lithuanian and Latvian terminologists to lexical values was presented by A. Ščucka (Institute of Latvian Language, University of Latvia). The report also examines a glossary published in 1922. The collected data allows us to speak about the positive influence of another language on its terminology. R. Kvašytė (University of Šiauliai) raised the problems of the lexicon describing national realities. Lacunes are cultural elements that are not understood by the representative of another culture. Specific national realities are also referred to as beekvivalent vocabulary, exotic vocabulary. The most appropriate term for such a vocabulary is beekvivalente lexika. V. Ščerbinas (J. Kolas Institute of Linguistics of the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences) presented a report on the relationship between terminology and special conceptography. Terminology studies the theoretical and practical problems of terminology dictionaries, while special conceptography covers the theory and practice of creating conceptuarials. The main difference between terminology and special conceptography is that terminology aims to cover as much special vocabulary as possible, while conceptography is characterized by a strict selection of the main concepts. Prof. V. Drotvinas (Vilnius Pedagogical University) talked about the new, modified and borrowed terms in A. Dambrauskas’ textbook. The analysis of the textbook's terms shows the author's efforts to present Lithuanian grammar terms. Due to the limited distribution of the textbook, these terms did not have a greater influence on the terminology of Lithuanian linguistics. V. Kudirka’s medical terms were discussed by P. Zemlevičiūtė (Institute of Lithuanian Language). At the end of the 19th century, Lithuanian print publishing accelerated. V. Kudirka was one of the most prominent public and press figures of the time, he made a great contribution to the creation of Lithuanian medical terminology. Some of V. Kudirka's terms are novels. S. Sprindienė (Lithuanian National Library M. Mažvydas) introduced the problems of restoration terminology. There are many inappropriate terms in the language and documents of restorers, and terminology gaps make it difficult for specialists to organize their work. The correct terms are searched for in dictionaries, standards and other documents from other fields, but this does not fill the terminology gaps.
254 J. Klimavičius (Lithuanian Language Institute) spoke about the issues of language use, survival and globalization. The Lithuanian language is polarizing – although the layer of common language is wide, the aggressive layer of slang is expanding. Standardization lacks systematic approach, the capacity of linguist terminologists is low, and public activity is insufficient. Retrieved 2008-12-16.
