International Scientific Conference on Terminology and Special Lexicon: Use and AUŠRA RIMKUTĖ Lietuvių kalbos institutas System On 19-20 February 2009, the international scientific conference on Terminology and Special Lexicon: Use and System was held in Riga to mark the 136th anniversary of the birth of academician Janis Endzelyns. The conference was organized by the Institute of Latvian Language of the University of Latvia. Presentations will be read in Latvian, Lithuanian, English and Russian. A collection of conference theses has been published. The conference was opened and greeted by the President of the Latvian Academy of Sciences Prof. Juris Ekmanis. Ilga Jansone, Director of the Institute of Latvian Language, gave a brief overview of Latvian linguistic research in 2008. Juris Baldunčiks spoke about the theory and practice of Latvian terminology. Interesting was the presentation by Maris Baltins from the Terminology and Translation Centre in Riga, in which he confirmed or denied the myths of Latvian terminology in the 21st century, such as the lack of Latvian terms, and also talked about the importance of accurate designation of terms, discussed the need for term databases, valuations and current translation problems. Raimondas Apinis (Raimonds Apinis) presented how terminology work is carried out in Latvia after accession to the European Union. Valentina Skujina, academician of the Latvian Language Institute, discussed the stability and change of the principles of term formation. Linda Piete, an employee of the Latvian Language Institute, spoke about the establishment of the Latvian Language Terminology Commission in 1919 and its activities. Anita Ščucka’s presentation was dedicated to values. Iveta Pūtele examined the terms profesija, specialitate and nodarbošanas used in Latvian. Anitra Roze discussed the semantics and usage of the adjectives lilla and violets in Latvian. Regina Kvašytė, associate professor of Šiauliai University, compared terms of Latvian and Lithuanian language stylistics and talked about their synonymy. (Kornēlija Pokrotniece) (Latvian Academy of Sciences) spoke about the use of adjectives in the terminology of religion. Aušra Rimkutė, a doctoral student of the Lithuanian Language Institute, in her presentation “Concept of the term religion in catechisms of 1883—1916” discussed the most important groups of meanings of the terms religion used in catechisms published in 1883—1916 and tried to define what is the term religion. Brigita Alekseeva examined the concepts of philology found in ancient Greek writings (Aristotle, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, etc.). Beata Biesiadowska- -Magdziarz read a report on the Polish language vocabulary used in the works of the famous Latvian novelist Adolfs Ers. Danutė Bulzgienė, lecturer at Šiauliai University, discussed the words of Ernest Hemingway’s novel “Kilimanjaro- ’s Snowmen”, which denoted extreme moments. Computer terminology was not forgotten. Maija Brede read a report about it. Katrina Erštikė (Katrina Erštike) and Ilze Ilze Locika examined the problems of terminology harmonization. In the report of Irina Kalinina were discussed French economic and financial terms borrowed from English. Viesturas Šules and Inesé Ėdelmane spoke about international botanical nomenclature. Malgozata Ostruvka (Malgorzata Ostrowka) examined the vocabulary used in the Polish press published in Belarus between 1917 and 1937. Dorota Kristina Rembisevska (Dorota Krystyna Rembiszewska) discussed the phrases used in eastern Latvian dialects. At the conference Aldis also read his papers Lauzis, Rasma Miltinia (Rasma Miltina), Janis Sylis (Janis Silis), Imantas Šmidebergas (Imants Šmidebergs), Eduardas Cauna (Eduards Cauna), Biruta Uzija. During the two-day conference, which was attended by scholars from Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, the problems of terminology in various fields and language in general, language policy and translation were discussed. They shared their experience in terminology and computer-aided terminology management. The next conference, dedicated to academician Janis Endzelynas, is scheduled to be held in 2010.
