166 J. Klimavičius | Term to Term. VII Deadline after deadline. VII Jonas KLIMAVIČIUS The most important part of the article is the terms of photography. However, its natural connection with light makes it necessary to go back and forth. The subjects of photography (technics) and photography, the techniques and history of their methods are referred to here only insofar as they are important for the history and present of the words of interest – special (terms) and common – polysemy and synonymy and their elimination (at least reduction) – norming and codification. For general orientation, it is necessary to mention the technical types of photography: ultraviolet and infrared photography, radiography, electrophotography (the most common of the numerous types of electrophotography), digital photography; Astrophotography and aerial photography (the part of the earth's surface) VLE VI 2004. At the very beginning, it is important to emphasize the picture. On July 19, 1822, the French scientist Joseph Nezifer Neyps discovered the world's first radioactive element, the plutonium. Scientifically accurate: In 1826 [in the 3rd century of the 19th century VLE VI 2004] the Frenchman J. Niepce recorded an image on a zinc plate covered with a light-sensitive asphalt – this was the first n u t r a u k a (h e l i o g r a f i j a; the exposure lasted as long as 8 h) TechEnc I 2000 624. The date of the emergence of modern photography is January 7, 1839, only its name was then daguerreotype. By the way, in Vilnius in 1840. “demonstrated daguerreotype brought from France” and “daguerreotype studio set up in 1843” VLE VI 2004. Having fixed the term photograph in the current – both serious encyclopedic and popular – usage, we can add the official – legal statutory: The Civil Code of the Republic of Lithuania establishes the right to a photograph. A natural person’s face (part of it), portrait or other image may be reproduced, sold, displayed, printed, and the person himself may be photographed only with his consent. Sav su TV 2007 42 7. So photography, but a photo. Why? Photography begins with a photo-.

You should not miss the greatest extraordinary – photosophy. On 19 August – 4 September 2010 took place the exhibition of the winners of the international photography competition “Photosophy”. It was explained that the title of the exhibition was borrowed from the philosopher Arvydas Šliogeris’s concept of “photosophy”, which in Lithuanian would mean “wisdom of light” and, it seems, could hardly define the specific concept of the exhibition, which unites different works. The subject is at least 15 years earlier and perhaps slightly different: Among the 80 participants – museums, f o t o m e n i n i n k a i, critics, historians, restorers, monument protection specialists, even f o t o f i l o s o f a i LA 1995 108 17. And that’s not all – there is already the exhibition of photographs of the former member of KTU FOTO studio Raimundas Tuminauskas Š i z o g r a f i j a, which exhibits works, according to art critics, it’s like a vision in the style of minimalism StA 2009 12 5. And what else can the artists of boring aesthetics come up with? Some of them were taken from other languages, but not overcome – they remained non-Lithuanian, jargon: To photograph the participants of the summit, <…>.
173Terminology | 2011 | 18 called f o t o o p u (from the English photo opportunity) LA 2000 6 6 (opportunity – favorable opportunity). At the end of this at least somewhat evaluated, divided inventory, two things need to be said. The varied spot photography was noticed and regulated quite early (Drotvinas 1963: 49–50) and, although not so quickly, the writing separately – photo – almost disappeared. The abundant and frequent use of abbreviated abbreviations, although influenced by the not entirely consistent and not entirely uniformly oriented use of equivalents in other languages*, although not entirely consistent, but inexorably – for reasons of brevity, i.e. economy – resolves the issue in their favor. Perhaps the most typical examples – camera, photo camera, photo lens, photo printer, photo photography, photo art, … They are not at all new – photo lens TŽZ 1936, photo camera (1934) A. Gric VN 1989 342. The camera DŽ 1954 and 1972 were later supplemented by the long (I would not say – full) version of the camera DŽ 1993 and 2000, but this does not change the importance of the variants – camera, camera TechEnc I 2000, VLE VI 2004. The flash "impulse lamp of photography, shining during photography" DŽ 1993 and 2000 remained without extension variant (also next to the flash is given the flash FTŽ 1979, photoflash – фотовспышка LRKŽ 1988, фотовспышка – 1. photoflash, 2. 174 J. Klimavičius | Term to term. VII. The motif of solemnity or the desire to emphasize the significance of photography, but by no means scientific – the pursuit of clarity, accuracy, because clarity in itself – from usage is enough. Some of them – photodocumentary, photojournalism, photoforum, … – may not have had long variants at all, only resembling abbreviated abbreviations. One another – photography, phototyping 1. ‘printing method from photosensitive glass plates containing a photographic image’, 2. „print of such a plate“ TŽZ 1936, „photomechanical berastris plate press method for reproduction of tone originals“ TechEnc I 2000, fototeka „systematic collection of photographs or negatives“ TŽZ 2001 – could not even have (and not „library of photographs or photography“!). The division of the long (it is not always appropriate to say: full) variants – compounds and their abbreviations into possible and impossible – even in terminology, in scientific style – could be only partial. The possible motive for such a distinction – the spot photo has another meaning – “light” (it is even the main one), would certainly not be decisive – as long as these words – not abbreviations! – a feature of the group – almost continuous thermality: photosphere “a surface of the sun that emits light and heat” TŽZ 1936, photoenergy MkslL 2010 10 4, photometer 1. in physics – “an instrument for measuring the intensity of light”, 2. in astronomy – “an instrument for determining the brightness of stars” TŽZ 1936, “a measuring device for photometric quantities – brightness, light intensity, luminous flux, illuminance” AETZ 2010, photopsy “subjective perception of absent light” M and G 1984 7 25, photosynthesis “the formation of organic compounds (chlorophyll) in plants from inorganic materials under the influence of light” TŽZ 1936, photosynthesis “the formation of saccharides from CO2 and H2O in plants under the action of light energy” TŽZ 1997, “the formation of organic compounds in inorganic plants and some bacteria under the action of light energy” TŽZ 2003, photoperiodism “the effect of the length of day and night (periodic change of light and darkness) on plant growth” TŽZ 1936, phototropism “the uniform movement of plant parts induced by light towards, from or <…> the light source” TŽZ 2001, phototaxis “light-induced taxi (shifting to or from the light source)” TŽZ 2001, Photomorphosis "light-induced change in plant shape" TŽZ 2001, photokinesis "active animal movement caused by light stimuli" TŽZ 2001, photoreception "reception of energy from light stimuli acting on the organism and its conversion into a nerve impulse" TŽZ 2001, photoreceptor m and g 1971 11 14, photobiology "biol. field of study of the processes that take place when exposed to ultraviolet or infrared radiation (photosynthesis, photoperiodism, phototaxis, etc.)“ VLE VI 2004, fotoimtuvas m ir g 1973
181Terminologija | 2011 | 18 In 2000. The branch of geodesy known as topography, which "researches and develops methods of representing the Earth's surface in plans and maps" TechEnc IV 2010, has the term topographical photograph in TechEnc II 2003 (Geodesy section). In the press there is already a contractive abbreviation toponuotrauka Sav with TV 2009 10 65. Primitively – made from the eye – glasses n u o t r a u k a – глазомерная с ъ ё м к а RLKŽ IV 1985 (LKŽ I1 1941 and I2 1968 are not available). Photography is used for precise work (but it is not enough), for example, phototheodolite photography "plans and maps are made from ground photogrammetric photographs. It is photographed from the earth's surface with a phototheodolite. The resulting photographic images are processed by stereophotographic devices and digital methods” TechEnc I 2000. In the field of geodesy, photogrammetry, the main purpose of which is to determine the shape, size and position of objects from f o t gr afi n ų nu ot r a u k ų measurements, to draw up plans and maps TechEnc I 2000, is gravimetric photography – “the totality of gravimetric and geodesic work for heavy field investigations of a certain area” for measuring and determining coordinates TechEnc II 2003. Thus, such a photograph is "making" (Russian: съёмка, not снимок) or "work", and based on the data of the gravimetric photograph, gravimetric maps are made TechEnc II 2003. There is also the meaning of this photograph as a “method”: geological photograph – “a complex method of geological work, which helps to thoroughly investigate the structure of the Earth’s crust in a certain territory <…> and to represent the data obtained in geological maps” TechEnc II 2003. Sometimes from the definition (or not quite successful interpretation), for example, the article lithochemical photo TechEnc III 2008, the meaning remains incomprehensible. The “method” is more the method of the photograph than the photograph itself. According to his motivation, the photo should be the “result” rather than the “doing”. We find that this is the case: survey – 1. ‘the act or operation of taking measurements to determine the relative positions of points on, above or below the Earth’s surface’ means measurement, 2. ‘result of such operations’ – photograph: engineering survey, engineering photograph K and GdŽ 2000, as well as photograph – photo(graph); picture, but site photograph – survey LAKŽ 1991. In this situation, the meaning of photographic photograph is somewhat different: photographic survey – “a photograph taken both on the basis of aerial photographs and on the basis of photographs, i.e. based on their combination” – photographic photograph” K and GdŽ 2000. There is also a photo where the photograph is not used as a basis, but simply mechanically supplements the textual data. Under the new aggressive inter-
182 J. Klimavičius | Term to term. VII. In the fashion of precision it is called photography and quoted: the assertion of factual circumstances, or „t e s i n ė f o t o g r a f i j a“: The factual circumstances can additionally be fixed by v a i z d o r b a g a r s o recording means, that is, n u o t r a u k o s or f i l m u o t a material Vd 2011 20 46. Finally, there is photography, seemingly without photography at all: фотография – 5. spec. photography (fixation of work actions, processes): фотография рабочего времени – photography of working time RLKZ IV 1985, fo tochronometrazh – "a method of studying the cost of working time, when simultaneously observing, measuring and examining the duration of certain elements of the work operation and other categories of costs over <…>. ∆ is a combination of working time photography (working time study where all costs of working time are measured without exception) and chronometry” VLE VI 2004. Thus, since the photograph is both x-ray and topographic, gravimetric, geological, in interdisciplinary usage the quite accurate term is also photographic photo. However, both the fields and the meanings of those pictures are so different that the picture of photography (not of technology) and plain language is clear without a mark – unlike those only term pictures. From the short and abundant usage we should at least mention the old one: Nuvedė Klubą pas f ot ogr af ą, <…> (1897) V. Kudir R I 1989 160. The photograph I would have sent it long ago, <…> (1898) V. Kudir R II 1990 846. <…> I stopped photographing (1905) J. Basan MGKr 1997 174. <…> interrupted several of my photographs (1907) J. Basan MGKr 1997 200–201. It happens that something extraordinary: Polianskis <…> promised a t e i t i s u his f o t o g r a f i j a and all of us nu tr a uk ti A. Čech JV 1961 379. The most important is the representative use: the photo studio VLE VI 2004 212, well-known from posters and mentioned from earlier times, although it did not enter the international dictionaries of words and normative lexicography, was later unsuccessfully changed to the already mentioned photograph 3. ‘institution, …’ and ‘workshop, …’ are nevertheless fixed in some places, e.g. фотоателье – fotoateljė and фотография – 3. (darbtuvė) photography, photo studio (but сняться в фотографии – to take a photo in photography!) RLKŽ IV 1985; Lietuvos fo t omėg ė jų sąjunga (1933) TechEnc I 2000 624, fotomėgėjas – фотолюбитель LRKŽ 1971, 1988, фотолюбитель – fotomėgėjas, fotografas mėgėjas (although фотолюбительский – fotomėgėjų), fotografamatininkas – fotografijos mėgėjas RLKŽ IV 1985, fotograf-amatininkas – fotografas mėgėjas RLKŽ II 1983, mėgėjas fotografas – любитель-фотогроф LRKŽ 1971, 1988; Lietuvos f ot ogr af ijo s m en o draugija (1969) and Lietuvos f ot ome ni nin kų sąjunga (1989) TechEnc I 2000 624.
183Terminologija | 2011 | 18 Although photography is old, its semantics is still changing. Definitions not yet fixed in the lexicography: “activities based on photography; images obtained by photography technique – a set of photos and/or a variety of genres, as well as genres”, in the usage it has long been: theory of photography, history of photography, development of photography; artistic, documentary, scientific, advertising, press photography; photo art, photography, photo archive, photo library, photo anthology, … As there is sculpture (genre) and not sculptures (works), graphics and not engravings, watercolors and not watercolors, so there is an exhibition of photographs. The unsuccessful overexertion, after mechanically understanding the essence of the category of the grammatical number, is the exhibition of photographs, and the second mechanical action – if photographs, then not photographs, and therefore the photograph is pushed in this way. What else is an individual photography / photo exhibition of an author or an exhibition of the author's photographs / a collection of photos in a general photography exhibition. It does not forget the long-existing, but still lexicographically unrecorded, even suspected (without ground) photography and film media NŽA 2010 9–10 334. In the periphery there is an overview of photographic life Iq 2010 7 114 (cf. cultural, artistic, literary life), even the subject of photo anecdotes Iq 2010 7 114. 3.Lithuanising attempts of photography (of various meanings). Those of us in Lithuania who got acquainted with photography as photographers did so first of all not in Lithuanian, without Lithuanian terms. And what only from the pictures, it's no good. For the beginning, it was sufficient to use the well-known, although applied to a slightly different picture, and thus of a different semantic connection, barbarism abrozdas: Einam a b r o z d ė l i ų (fotografijų) nusitraukt (Surviliškis) LKŽ I1 1941, I2 1968, as well as ZnŽ I 2003, abrozas: Anas a ( t ) d a u š t a s kap un a b r o z e l i o LzŽ 1985, abrozas, abrazikas ZtŽ 1998. Some even from the very high elite have fun not being able to understand how the sheep carried by the wolf and lost, but running after him crazy: <…> from the fourth cover, from two giant format a b r o z d ė l i ų, pretending to models looking at the poses of the author NŽA 2007 8–9 430. Photography, which has entered into the living language, is only a “photo” and only “applaud” – patagrapija (Gervėčiai, Marijampolė) and patagrapuoti (Simnas), patigrapija (Kamajai, Palomenė) LKŽ IX 1973, patigrapija (and patigrapuotis) ZnŽ II 2004, potigrafija ZtŽ 1998 (and patigrafuoti), LzŽ 1985 or and “applaud” – fotigrapka, patigrafka LzŽ 1985, fatagrafavoti DvŽ I 2005. There is also a fotografikartka and card 3. ZtŽ 1998. And in the poem of Mykolas Vaitkaus there is a card: Lying on the table this k o r t e l ė, / Looking from her sad face, <…> 1969. pp. 365.
184 J. Klimavičius | Term after term. VII Lithuanianization began quite early. Antanas Baranauskas wrote in 1876: Send me your face p ave k slą, š vi eso raš ta is i šrašy tą A. Baran R II 1970 195. In 1887, it was no longer the letters of the light, but the letters of the light: My p a v e k s l ą š v i e s r a š t í, affectionately requested by Tamsta, I send A. Baran R II 1970 144. In the second sentence, however, there is only a picture: It would be nice to have my dear Tamstos p a v e i k s l ą. The Picture of Living Language and Ancient Writings – 3. ‘appearance, form’; and 4. „vaizdas“ already from M. Daukša is also 1. „artistic image in the plane“, so it was easy to find 2. „photography, image“ LKŽ IX 1973. The LKŽ presents this picture from various places in the Lithuanian language area: Juzis p a v e i k s l u s i m s t ė (Žagarė). A[r] have taken off the painting (Miežiškiai); also Pagėgiai, Kuršėnai. With certificate inserted in DG: Figure 2. ‘photography’ DŽ 1954 and 1972, 3. ‘photo’ JZ 1993, and photo 1. is interpreted as ‘picture of photograph’ JZ 1954, 1972, 1993. Much more widely used verb paveiksluoti “to photograph” and abstract painting Mosėdis, Grūšlaukis, Šatės, Telšiai, Kretinga, Kuršėnai, Eržvilkas; Žagarė, Meškuičiai, Jurbarkas, Skirsnemunė, Kiduliai, Geistarai, Krekenava, Alizava, Kirdeikiai (reference 2. “described on paper” Tauragė, painted “decorated with paintings, illustrated” Marijampolė), painter Kiduliai and painter 1. 1979. pp. 9. "The New York Times". Even in 1972 and 1993, the paintings were "photographed". It should also be recalled that A. Baranauskas’s new work “painter” was published in LKŽ IX 1973. By the way, among the possible authors of the word vaizdarašys „painter“ (as well as vaizdakalys „sculptor“, vaizdakalyba and vaizdakalystė „sculpture“ – they, apparently, were intended to replace Aušra (1883 146) skaptorius, skaptorysta, although a similar term was also used later – J. Basanavičiaus skaptorystė, Vydūno skaptyba, Vydūno and J. Basanavičiaus skaptininkas, raštų skapitonis LKŽ XII 1981) the most likely author would probably be Jonas Jablonskis, because his imagery 2. „paveikslas kūrinys, tapymas“ (1. „paveikslinis, pictografinis raštas“), pictorial work, perhaps also pictorial art „paveikslas“ (pictorial art – Antanas Lelis) LKŽ XVII 1996. In the old dictionary of K. Sirvydas (~1620) the image is 5. „art image“ LKŽ XVII 1996: obraʒ / imago, simulachrum, statua. wayʒdas / abraʒas, from the old writings – and „statula“, SNŽŽ 1907 – painting, abrozdas, risunkas (r.), even DŽ 1954 and 1972 is still figurative language see sculptura. But write 12. „painting, ornamenting“, although there is actually also „painting“ (for roses, writes a string), „writing a picture“, although the imagery is used even by J. Balčikonis or included in LRKŽ V 1968, more resembles Russian. п и с а т ь картину. Perhaps not without reason J. Jablonski and the visual artist LKZ XVII 1996 were seized.
185Terminologija | 2011 | 18 A. Baranauskas’s light-writing would be literally accurate, but vaguely motivated by the simple word photographia (or French photographie), but the picture light-writing also resembles German. Light image. The name is actually motivated not by light, but by light, shines, shone 5. fot. „to act on light while taking a photo, expose“ LKŽ XV 1991, but in no way can be motivated to write words or written semantics. Only in the interpretation of digital photography the word write is needed: If a t v a i z d a s u ž r a š o m a s electron. way in a matrix of light-sensitive charge interface elements, the photograph is called digital. Video recording on a medium is not photographic, but magnetic (and sound) – record 3. „recording sound or image on a magnetic disc or tape” DŽ 1993 (recorded on a tape recorder DŽ 1972 is inaccurate), record and record: audio record, video record EncKompŽ 2005. Whether the video or audio recording devices Vd 2011 20 46 used by the court are both photographic and magnetic may be unclear. A. Baranauskas's light paper 2. „fotografija, nuotrauka“ much later – already unnecessarily tried to use in the meaning 1. „fotografija (atvaizdo gavimo būdas)“ in RLŽ 1933 (not yet RLŽ 1924) and LRŽ 1933 (and šviesoraštis), in writings – and 3. „kalkės nuorašas“ LKŽ XV 1991. The limestone n u o r a š a s is unmotivated in any way: the copy is only handwritten, and the copying technique is a copy. It is this light print 3. without any *светопись, and from световая копия, светокопия grew into 3-meaning term light print – 1. The TechEnc lightbook has been abandoned, leaving the diazocopy with the new synonym diazotype TechEnc I 2000, although how such a copy should be called is unclear (diazocopy?). The 1972 edition of DŽ still exists as DŽ 1993 and DŽ 2000. Rare and quite individual is Vincas Pietaris’ picture 4.: I went several times to f o t o g r a f ą, asking about p a v a i z d u s (1897) V. 186 J. Klimavičius | Term to term. VII Even more individual M. Valančiaus reworking with the words „portrait“ LKŽ I1 1941 „image“: The walls were decorated with v e i d u a t a d u o s m i a i s, or with port keys LKŽ I2 1968. Give up 12. „to look like“ is illustrated by M. Valančius Salantų sentence: So you give to Valančius’ Man 2nd ed. 1969. The image in LKŽ I1 1941 is interpreted only as „portrait, picture“, but here is interesting J. Jablonski’s sentence: Čia jis mūsų a t v a i z d u s r a š o. LKŽ I2 1968 atvaizdas 1. the explanation is supplemented with the word „fotografija“, but neither J. Jablonski’s other sentence – Ar esi matęs jo atvaizdą?, nor J. Šlap LKŽ 1940 atvaizdas – portret, fotografja, obraz sufficiently confirms „fotografijos“. J. Jablonski’s portrayer “image maker” in LKŽ I1 1941, later in LKŽ I2 1968 supplemented by BŽ 405 (this is RLŽ 1924 портретистъ – portrayer), by no means a “photographer”. In 1954 and 1972 (and later) the image does not have the meaning of "photograph". The prepositional verb to reflect the meaning of living language and writings 14. „turn back, reject back (rays, light)“ // „make to reflect“ LKŽ VIII 1970 made rare reflection 1. „atsimušimas (vandeny)“ (A. Juškos dictionary, M. Pečkauskaitė-Šatrijos Ragana) LKŽ I1 1940, I2 1968, and from the undoubtedly later atmušti meaning, but presented above – 13. „nufotografuoti“: took the Club to f o t o g r a f ą, a t m u š ė jį <…> (V. It will take some time, but it will be necessary to document p a t a g r a p i j ų (Daugėliškis) LKŽ VIII 1970 (also Alovė, Dieveniškės) – also a relatively rare rebound 2. „atvaizdas“: At mu ša jo graži, adistar (just, completely) jis o jis at si muš ęs (A. This is the value of the fraction. odbitka (by the way, also “language lime – value”), odbić. But not badly adapted to beat semantics – “to photograph” is also beating: Mušė patagrapijas Leipalingis. The 24th and 25th rows are broken up into 24 rows, and the 26th and 27th rows are broken up into 24 rows. A fairly old loan of meaning: I would have sent the photograph long ago, but I do not have it – I cannot leave taken (1898) V. Kudir R II 1990 846. LKŽ IV 1957 does not mean to take these translative meanings, and the translator is misrepresented: [image] takes off the portraits of those objects A. Mick LBP 1975 320. Aloyzas Vidugiris noted: remove 5. (cf.) “photographed LzŽ 1985, but ZtŽ 1998 – not. The most likely source of these translations is Polish. zdjęcie and zdjąć, zdejmować (probably from German Aufnahme and aufnehmen), plg. and rus. снимок and снять, снимать. Unfortunately, the photograph was inserted in DŽ 1954, 1972, although neither DŽ 1972, nor DŽ 1993 does not have this value. 4. a photo. From the relatively early and now quite common picture 1photo 1. „picture of photography“ is not much later – from Aušra 1885 277. In LKŽ VIII 1970 it is quite rightly distinguished as a homonym from the derivatives of other meanings of the verb nutraukti (and even nutrūkti – 2photo 2.). DG does not do this – picture 1. „picture of photography“ DŽ 1954, 1972, 1993, 2000. Photo and (nu)traukti (already from Tėvynės sargas 1899 7–8) – undoubtedly translations from German. Abzug ir deduct. Ernst Fraenkel, in his etymology of the word traukti, presenting its derivatives, does not mention the picture (none!) (Fraenkel 1955–1965), Wojciech Smoczyński presents the picture of the word traukti in the article not only 1. ‘tear; przerwa“, but even 2. „photo, photography“ (Smoczyński 2007). Some of these Lithuanian semantic connections may be seen – traukti 7. // „to change the position of an object in relation to other objects (to zoom in or out)“: Pulk nuo kelio trobą (Rokiškio r. Panemunis), 43. // „turn to oneself“: Apparently, the lightning guard (Seinai) is drawing fire, maybe more 36. „to be like (to what)“: graži, laiba, aukšta – on tėvą traukus (Miežiškiai), phraseology as from (one) eye pulled – about very similar to what LKŽ XVI 1995. Now this new pull semantics is very common and diverse: pull 50. „fotografuoti, paveiksluoti“: Ėjo visi in pasus t r a u k t i s, <…> (Many), even pulled out 28. ‘interrupt, photograph’: Muno mare as a nt po tog ra fij os from tr auk ta – so beautiful (Šatės),

The photograph, although not systemic in photography, saved it from the remaining undesirable ambiguity, since it has long since lost its meaning of “workshop” or “company”. Quite often the photograph is used alongside the photography: photography cycle and photography cycle NŽA 2006 3 73, Tomas Vyšniauskas photography and Tomas Vyšniauskas photography NŽA 2005 10 484 and 485. This is also the case in the sentence: Instead of the cardiologist V. S. n u o t r a u k o s was announced the anesthesiologist V. J. f o t o g r a f i j a Vd 2006 12 11. This is quite a student, straightforward unnecessary stylization. And there is also a totally unsuccessful use: in pictures and photographs NŽA 2009 7 267 (Nerijus Šepetys) emerges. However, there are also those who feel the necessity of photography: In the extensive documentary f o t o g r a f i j o j e the most convincing N and NN <…> n u o t raukos KB 2007 7 36. <…> today f o t o g r a f a i, it seems, do not take their n u o t r a u k o s e to develop the “big” themes Iq 2011 4 110. Drawing clearly descends to international photography, but it is also sometimes necessary, e.g.: fotog ra fa s vis n ut ra ukdav o o their tribesmen NŽA 2007 10 504. If used more frequently, it would also strengthen the position of the picture.
189Terminologija | 2011 | 18 CONCLUSIONS Photo-, photography and photo – like a pyramid. Its lower part consists of two parallel sections. The first – abbreviations of photographic meaning – with the emphasis on photo- – abbreviations, more abundant and frequent than the full (long) variants, reveal the multilayered diversity of photography – this is photosensitivity and various photographic techniques with photographic supplies, photographic activities and results, photography fields, types (and photography with a frame, by the way, are not unambiguous), genres and various terms, preterms and occasionalisms. The competition between the long and short variants (the photographic machine and the camera) is determined by the use, although not entirely consistent and universal (similar to the duplicity of the equivalents in other languages), in favour of the short ones. Long variants, although rarely necessary, are more common in technical terminology, and less in photography, especially in its non-technical part and in quasi-technical usage. For terminology, both options would be suitable, with the shorter ones being preferred. Some (photodocumentary, photojournalism, photoart) will not even have had longs, while others (photography, phototyping, photo library) could not have had them at all. The second section – terms of various sciences, the focus of which is photo- – not contractive from photography – means “light” (photosphere, photosynthesis, photobiology, photochemistry). The semantic difference of the terms in these sections is almost completely clear, even the ambiguity of some of them is understood, and sometimes they are separated (sensitivity to light and photosensitivity, light technology and phototechnology). The meanings of photoelectricity, photoelectronics and photochemistry are also clearly implied, but the abbreviations of the meanings of “photoelectric”, “photoelectronic”, “photochemical”, whose basic compound is not the obvious word photoelectricity, photoelectronics, photochemistry (photocell, photoeffect, photomultiplier, photorelay; photoemission; photosmog), become unclear (even for specialists – whether photoelectric or photoelectronic). Photoelectric element and effect; photoelectronic devices (multiplier, diode, relay), photoelectron emission; photochemical smog understood. Non-syllable word – crossword photo is not provided and cannot be provided. The second part of the pyramid is the whole photography of two sections – although already without 3. „workshop“ or „company“ (it is a photo studio), but still at least partly ambiguous, and photography 2. and synonymous – and (photo)photo. 1–2, pp. 1–2. two attached suffixes – photographic frame (both ambiguous). Since both photography and cameras (photogrammetry) are different, this is also gravimetric, topographic, geological, etc. photography – not photography, because it began with a glasses photo. The meaning of these pictures is twofold – and
190 J. Klimavičius | Term to the term. VII “making” (Russian: съёмка, not снимок), and “result”, only sometimes they are distinguished – engineering m a t a v i m a s and engineering n u o t r a u k a. In interdisciplinary usage, an accurate systematic term would be photographic photograph, not photophotograph (topophotograph is still relatively rare, and a photo of a location is already rare), even not a photograph, which is quite sufficient for the activity of photography (not technically) and for ordinary language. Legal photography (maybe also a photo?) is “the statement of factual circumstances in text with photographs or filmed material”. The semantics of photography is still changing, expanding – it is already “a activity based on the technique of photography; photographs, their genre diversity, genres" and so on. The history of Lithuanianization of photography is long and wide: photography 1. – this is A. Baranauskas’s translation of the light print, 2. – painting light print, painting, image, V. Pietari’s portrait, M. Valančiaus’s re-creation of the portrait, rare reflection(s); photographing – painting, beating, taking. The top part of the pyramid – the established picture and (un)break. The photograph saves photography from unwanted ambiguity. The use of the English word photograph is completely reckless, because there is no ambiguity in English: fotografija (and fotografavimas) – photography. Although the pull descends to international photography, but the pull is necessary and strengthens the position of the photo. In serious – encyclopedic, legal usage, the photograph is firmly anchored. Lithuanian photography school cannot be allowed to be without Lithuanian photography.
