As every year, the conference was organized by the General Language Department of the Lithuanian Language Institute together with the Department of Lithuanian Language of Vilnius University. The theme of this year’s conference is “Lithuanian language survival and renewal in modern society”. The twentieth edition of the conference is devoted to examining changes in general language norms and usage, to discussing the status of the Lithuanian language and its implementation. The conference was attended by speakers from various Lithuanian institutions and a scientist from neighboring Latvia. Seventeen papers were presented at the anniversary conference. The director of the Lithuanian Language Institute, doc. dr. JoAnta Zabarskaitė. The introductory speech was delivered by the head of the General Language Department of the Lithuanian Language Institute, senior researcher dr. (HP) RiTA miliūnAiTė. The first part of the first meeting was devoted to the life and work of the linguist Jonas Jablonskis, the functioning of the Lithuanian state language, language policy. The first presentation at the conference was given by the linguist JonAS KlimAVičius. The guidelines for language education were discussed, and it was emphasized that J. Jablonskis should be seen as a coherent modern personality. In studying his works it is important to highlight his life guidelines, guidelines of activity. About common language and changes in its conception spoke the senior researcher of the Lithuanian Language Institute lAimA KAlėDienė in the presentation Common Lithuanian language concept at the beginning of the 21st century. The state of common language in Lithuania is discussed. The project Modern geolinguistic research in Lithuania was briefly presented, its preliminary results allowing to say that in Lithuania common language is used essentially universally, which has not been the case so far. The presentation briefly outlines changes in the standardization of the common language abroad, discusses the creation, maintenance and dissemination of the common language in the 21st century in Lithuania.
318 Language Culture | 86 It is concluded that the weakest links in the standardization, codification and supervision of Lithuanian common language are the dissemination of common language norms and the raising of prestige. DAiVA VAiŠnienė, Chairperson of the State Lithuanian Language Commission, spoke about language policy in the modern multilingual and multi-media world in her presentation The Present of Language Policy: About Traditions and New Insights. The report discusses the current development and standardization of the Lithuanian language, the standardization situation of the Lithuanian common language, the latest changes in standards and proposals for variants. The questions examined are whether it is possible to combine tradition and change, to seek a harmony of scientific validity and diversity of usage, leaving space for specific expression, including non-common language variants. KAZimieRAS GARŠVA, senior researcher of the Lithuanian Language Institute, read a report on the origin and authentic spelling of the name book of South-Eastern Lithuania. The presentation dealt with the origin of names of places of residence in Vilnius and Šalčininkai districts, water names (most of the names are of Lithuanian origin) and the spelling of personal names. The second part of the first session is devoted to discussing language changes in various areas of society. Two reports deal with advertising language. Vilnius University professor ReGinA KoženiAuSKienė in her presentation Figurative play of updated phraseology in the media drew attention to updated phraseology, which shows the special stylistic vivacity of Lithuanian language. The paper takes a new look at the reconstructed phraseology: it is described and analyzed along with syntactic destructive figures. In general, the authors are desperately trying to attract the attention of the recipient with figurative play. Intertextuality in advertising was presented by iRenA SmeTonienė, associate professor of Vilnius University. It discusses the concept of intertextuality and its characteristics. The speaker talked about how different types of intertextuality help the creator of advertising to highlight the characteristics of the advertised item, interest or intrigue the potential buyer and push him to purchase the product. She illustrated her presentation with numerous examples from advertising. The other two reports were on language changes in the media. RASA DoBRžinSKienė, lecturer at Mykolas Romeris University, read the report The image of police officer in Lithuanian media. The report aimed to show what connotations – positive or negative – reports about police officers prevail in the media. The speaker was

The existence and renewal of the Lithuanian language in modern society 319 opinion that the media has an influence on poor police ratings, that only negative information is published about police officers. The collected material showed that positive and negative connotations of statements are approximate. Inga nAnARTonYTė of Kaunas Faculty of Humanities of Vilnius University described the main ways of lexical updating in journals for adolescents. It is emphasized that in magazines for teenagers, especially in magazines for boys, the border between the journalistic and the colloquial style is blurred in order to achieve pragmatic goals (to like and please readers) or to create certain roles. In the rapporteur’s opinion, authors of magazines for teenagers should not follow the manner of young people, but show readers an example of illustrative, normative language use. encouraged to undertake the research by senior researcher of the Lithuanian Language Institute RiTA miliūnAiTė, who in her presentation New contamination forms in current usage, based on the Naujažodžių database, examined the causes, sources and structure peculiarities of these forms. The linguist stated that the majority of such structures come as borrowings, especially from English, other contaminative structures are translated from other languages to the substrate and own – those whose context testifies to the creation in Lithuanian (the latter were found the least). The speaker emphasized that it makes sense to talk about contaminative derivatives, which have become more frequent in usage, in order to update both their concept and the fund of examples of new words of this type in scientific and educational literature. The first part of the second session is devoted to vocabulary, its use, innovations. DZinTRA Šulce, associate professor of the University of Liepaja, in her presentation “International words use in the present” discussed the principles of adaptation of international words in a language, presented the dictionaries of international words published in Latvia, and the institutions that deal with the adaptation of international words. The speaker compared the adaptation of international words in Latvian and Lithuanian languages. It was noted that Lithuanians dealt more successfully with most of the international words and fully adapted them to the Lithuanian grammar system. RASuolė VlADARSKIENĖ, senior researcher at the Lithuanian Language Institute, in her presentation “Administrative language lexical innovations” talked about the reasons for language change, and presented the most easily changing layer of language – lexicon. It was talked about the innovations of the lexicon of the administrative language, individual groups of them were discussed in detail illustrated with examples of usage. The speaker summarized that the reason for the emergence of innovation is the translation of the European Union

AuReliJA leonAVičienė, professor of Kaunas University of Technology, and DAliA liePuoniūTė, student of the Bachelor’s programme in French Philology at Vilnius University, presented a report on the translation of European Union documents from French into Lithuanian, entitled Translation of lexical analytical structures of European Union documents from French into Lithuanian. The paper examines one genre of administrative style – court decisions in French and Lithuanian. The speakers emphasized that the topic of the present thesis is relevant because of the frequent errors in translation of texts from analytical languages (English, French, etc.) into synthetic Lithuanian language, the disregard of the peculiarities of the native language system, norms and stylistic usage. Two papers are devoted to the General Dictionary of Lithuanian Language. DAiVA muRmulAiTYTė, senior researcher of the Lithuanian Language Institute, read the presentation Semantics of the names of monetary units. The presentation presents the lexical semantic group of monetary unit names and discusses the formulation of definitions of this semantic group in dictionaries of various languages. Based on the material of the dictionaries of various languages, the speaker assumed that the names of currency units have three meanings (or three shades of meaning): the unit in terms of value compared to other monetary units (single use only); the monetary symbol of its value (banknote and/or coin). The speaker presented a possible article for the name of the currency unit in the General Dictionary of Lithuanian Language. AuReliJA TAmulionienė, a researcher of the Lithuanian Language Institute, read the second presentation on the subject of the Common Lithuanian Language Dictionary, entitled Names of Monetary Units in the Common Lithuanian Language Dictionary. The report examines the problems encountered in describing the names of monetary units in the Common Lithuanian Language Dictionary, presents possible criteria for selecting the names of monetary units, discusses the variation of some forms of monetary names, shows non-standardized cases. The second part of the second session is devoted to questions of evaluation of language phenomena and syntax. LIna MuRinienė, associate professor of the Lithuanian University of Education, presented the paper “Degrees of evaluation of language phenomena: on the (non) limit of the norm”. The report raises a new problem of evaluating the degree of correctness of linguistic phenomena. The key question that often arises for language users and language practitioners is which of the four levels of evaluation are indisputablely considered to be common language.
A. Tamulionienė. the existence and renewal of the Lithuanian language in modern society 321 errors? The report focuses on the most controversial second degree of evaluation of the correctness of linguistic phenomena – the avoidable language phenomenon. The presentation on the syntax of legal documents Feature of the syntax of legal documents was read by lecturer lAimA PečKuVienė of Mykolas Romeris University and professor GieDRė čePAiTienė of Šiaulių University. The law language reviewed in the report is characterized by cases of conjugation of verbs, prepositions, conjunctions, sentence parts in relation to the general language norm. The statements are illustrated with examples from the codes of the Republic of Lithuania, their commentaries and the Supreme Court’s online publication Jurisprudence. The last conference presentation on the normative evaluation and presentation of some syntactic phenomena was read by ViDAS VAlSKYS, associate professor of the Lithuanian University of Education. He presented the project “Study of the relationship of Lithuanian language syntax norms and recommendations with current usage” funded by the State Lithuanian Language Commission and carried out by the Department of Lithuanian Linguistics and Communication of the Lithuanian University of Education since 2012. The report discusses several syntax phenomena, about which the rapporteur has some doubts and invites discussion. The present usage and normative evaluation of the phrase believe in what was discussed, as well as the avoidable localising of the attribute of an object. The speaker stated that in the current usage, conversations with locals are quite abundant and productive, and therefore invites to consider whether the constructions in question should really be avoided. The closing word was given by JonAS KlimAVičius. The speaker summarized the presentations and expressed his satisfaction that the tradition of the conference continues and this year it received so many listeners and speakers.
