ANNOTATION The article examines dialects from the 6th–7th decades of the 20th century, which have not been studied in detail by linguists from the point of view of pronunciation. Material from the manuscript sources of the eastern Altay Utena dialects. The aim of the study is to determine the pronunciation tendencies of consonant words found in these descriptions (in the answers to the questions of the Lithuanian Language Atlas collection program and in the transcribed texts). Based on a fairly large amount of material, accentuation patterns prevailing in the Utenis dialect during the investigated period are discussed, variants of pronunciation of words and their forms, possible reasons for their existence are explained, a list of word forms with accentuated variants in the same speech is given. 20th Century Fox. pp. 6–7. The accentuation of consonant words and their forms in the eastern Altay Utenis dialect was influenced by the formation of the law of accent deduction, morphological equalization of the paradigm, preservation of ancient pronunciation relics, disappearance of the accentual and semantic model of two plurals – the simple and the coopinė, tendency to oxytonesis and other factors. ABSTRACT The article examines the manuscript sources of the Eastern Aukštaitian subdialect of Utena dating from the 1950s–1960s, which are stored in the Dialect Archive of the Centre of Geolinguistics at the Institute of the Lithuanian Language and which were collected in the 1990s. have not yet been thoroughly studied by linguists from the perspective of accentuation. Based on the substantial amount of material, the article disthe possible reasons for their existence. A list of word forms with accentual variants within the same local dialect is provided. The study examines how cusses the accentuation patterns, the accentuation variants of words and word forms prevalent in the subdialect of Utena during the studied period, along with the accentuation of declinable words and their forms phological levelling of paradigms, the preservation of ancient accentuation relics, the decline of the accentual and semantic model of two plural forms (simple and collective), the in the Eastern Aukštaitian subdialect of Utena during the 1950s–1960s was influenced by factors such as the formation of the rule of stress retraction, the mortendency toward oxytone accentuation, and other factors. ĮVADAS The phenomena of the pronunciation of the Utena dialect of the eastern Altays have been studied fragmentarily by scientists so far. Dialectological works have discussed in general terms the nature of accent retraction in the area of this dialect (LKT 1970: 34–35; LKA 1982: 123–124, ref. no. 105; Zinkevičius 1994: 74; 2006: 94; LKTCH 2004: 126–127; Markevičienė 1999: 16; Urbanavičiūtė-Markevičienė, Grinaveckis 1992: 12; RAU 2010: 35) and words pronounced differently in conversations1 (DST 2013: 23–24; MLT 2019: 24; Balčiūnienė, Meiliūnaitė, Rinkauskienė 2019: 189). Researchers focused mainly on the phonological secondary accent (Kosienė, Girdenis 1979: 48–56), monophthongs, inessive and iliative, plural noun and suffix prepositions (Kosienė 1982: 61–71; Bacevičiūtė, Rinkauskienė 2007: 4–11; 2008a: 78–84; 2008b: 229–237). Therefore, there is a lack of studies of the pronunciation system of this proverb, publications devoted to discussing the signs of accentuation and tendencies. The aim of this article is to describe the dialects of the eastern Altay Utenis dialects in the 6th and 7th decades of the 20th century from a synchronic point of view. in the manuscript sources rinkta nagrinėti vieno laikotarpio medžiagą – iki šiol kalbininkų išsamiau were found linksniuo1 words in Omen, which are pronounced in most of the Altay dialects saugomų XX a. 6–7 deš. rankraštinių šaltinių duomenis. according to a different accent paradigm or the main variant of pronunciation is a different pronunciation than in the studied dialect.

The main tasks of the research are: 1) to identify the accentuated and accentuation variants2 of conjugated words according to one accentuation paradigm, to compile their summaries; 2) to discuss the prevalence of words pronounced according to the paradigms of fixed and/or mobile pronunciation and particular forms with accentuated variants in the dialect area; 3) to identify the factors determining the pronunciation tendencies of inflected words. The descriptive analytical method is used in the study, as well as comparative and internal reconstruction methods. The article examines the pronunciation of accentuated words according to the variation of accentuation and/or pronunciation paradigms of word forms, the frequency of use of accentuated variants and their prevalence in the dialect area, etc. The research is new and relevant. The article, based on the material collected from the entire eastern Highland Utenis area, describes for the first time the pronunciation tendencies of conjugated words, and provides a list of word forms with accent variants in the same speech. This study should be of particular interest to researchers of dialect pronunciation tendencies and accentuation phenomena. Especially since it is possible to compare the material discussed in the article and the conclusions presented with the studies already carried out in the 6th–7th decades of the 20th century on the southern Highlanders, western Highlanders Kaunas and eastern Highlanders Kupiškis and Anykščiai. results of research of manuscript sources (Ragaišienė 2012: 219–231; 2018: 176–201; 2019: 1–19; 2020a: 1–17; 2020b: 211–226; 2022: 230–270). It is likely that this type of research can also have practical use for dialectologists and lexicographers who prepare dialect texts and dictionaries. 1. CONTAINING SUBSTANCE Collecting material for the Lithuanian Language Atlas3, 6th–7th decades of the 20th century. were investigated the residential areas (points)4 belonging to the area of eastern Altay Utenis and prepared their dialectal descriptions. In the linguistic literature, words and their forms with different pronunciations are referred to as pronunciation variants (Kardelytė 1975: 11; Zinkevičius 1979: 91 and others), accent variants (Stundžia 1995: 22), pronunciation proximities (Pakerys 1994: 7) or pronunciation proximities (Mikulėnienė, Pakerys, Stundžia 2007: 8). In recent years, a tradition has emerged to use the terms accent variant and accent proximity as synonyms (Ragaišienė 2010; 2020a: 1–17; 2020b: 211–226; 2022: 230–270; cf. also Stundžia 2009: 66). 3 LKA 1977; LKA 1982; LKA 1991. 4 Places of residence to be studied (point names and numbers) determined by the editors of the Lithuanian language atlas.

Kai kuriais the words is not specified. In the investigated sources the words are written with different transcription, inaccuracies and errors are not avoided. For example, in the case of a single word, there are often several variants of the same word. When transcription is not relevant for the discussed accentology phenomena, the article provides examples in common Lithuanian characters. Forms with a degressive accent and cases of a column accent are indicated to be transcribed. 7 The article does not indicate the abbreviation of the studied settlement (village), but the name and number of the point of the Lithuanian language atlas. This is done for convenience. It is not advisable to enter several abbreviations of one point, because the map has the possibility to indicate data only at Lithuanian language atlas point. 8 Research shows that the pronunciation of a word cannot be determined solely by the local forms, because their pronunciation may differ from that of other verbal forms, i.e. they do not always show the accent paradigm (Ragaišienė 2023: 190–210). 9 For words with different pronunciation forms, the first is the main pronunciation variant.

Based on the collected material, it is not possible to determine the pronunciation tendencies of some specific words or types of verbs, to discuss in more detail the interaction of stems and the effect of productive stems on the accentuation of non-productive ones. However, the available data is certainly sufficient for the 6th-7th decades of the 20th century. to assess accentuation of eastern Altay Utenis dialect and to determine pronunciation tendencies of consonant words. Especially since the sources discussed reflect relatively well the characteristics of the studied dialect. The material presented in them is valuable and reliable, because most of the manuscripts were prepared by experienced linguists – K. Eigminas, E. Grinaveckienė, K. Morkūnas, Ž. Urbanavičiūtė, A. Valeckienė, K. Vosylytė, A. Vanagas and others. 2. PRONUNCIATION TENDENCES OF INTERPRETATION WORD 2.1 In the Eastern Utenis dialect, accentuation tendencies of conjugated words and their forms are primarily related to the detachment of the accent. The material of manuscript sources shows that the 6th-7th decades of the 20th century. In part of the Uteniškiai area two laws operated – weak conditional cut-off and more intensive conditional cut-off (see LKA 1982; reference no. 105). In the Gataũčiai, Vabalniñkas, Šaltẽniai, Õnuškis, Bučiennai, Obẽliai, Rõkiškis neighborhoods the consonant was regularly detracted from the short ending to any penultimate long syllable, e.g.: gauotta, juųsva, leñdi, piėki, su ruūka, šattta ruūka, viėna Gtč (114), skųra, eeenni, eeennu, gaūdva, liaupsna, lijattus, jaũni, kaųbi, piėki Bč (121), baųsu, gųvi, laūki, viėni, žmų.na Ob (148) and others.10 About Moltus, Suginčiùs, Panemunlį, Kriaunàs, Sùviekas, the accent from the short end was inclined to detract into the long syllable, which is based on a long vowel or ie, uo, 10 In the manuscript sources, in cases of detracting accent, diphthongs and long vowels are usually marked with a middle suffix, and diphthongs – with a strong suffix.

In these dialects, the law operated in unequally regular manner, for example, in the Debeėkiai and Vidẽniškiai neighbourhoods, lijattus, formos, regis, buvo vartojamos pramaišiui, pvz.: bda, dienàs, i.rà / ∙ra, lietùs, sveki, vienà / vina, žmogùs Dbk (274), aiù, i.rà, suŋkù, uždėtà / raudų∙na (cf. raudanų∙s), ų∙ška, skų∙las Vdn (450) maintaining and diverting the accent. During the investigation period, the manifestations of this phenomenon were also observed in the non-accent conversations of Utenis11. formų su šalutiniu arba „dviviršūniu“ kirčiu12 vartojimas (plg. Urbanavičiūtė-Markevičienė, Grinaveckis 1992: 12; Stundžia 1995: 70; Ragaišienė 2014-02-15. pp. 214–215. It is true, that in the investigated sources few cases of this type of consonant notation were found, e.g.: αang.nù, audjujà, suukkù, teekkùs, uukkstė, vaukkù, viennà Spt (309) and others.13 The spread of the pavieniai kirčio atitraukimo atvejai. Kirtis atitraukiamas nuo trumpos gaphenomenon in the area of the dialect is also shown by the occurrence of lunes into syllables consisting of ie, uo or long vowels, e.g.: liattus (cf. letaũs), raud.ni (cf. raudanan.s), viänni / vienak Kkt (380), geltóna (cf. gelta.naj.), negag.va, sennus, viänna (cf. vienà) Brč (245) and others. Often forms with a deductive adjective are used as adjacent ones, e.g. skūrà / skau.ra, sūnùs / sau.nus, vienna / vienà, tvo.rà / tvau.ra, etc. Lb (414), gi.và / gag.va, pæ.ne / po.nè, sūnùs, sūnaũs / sæn.nus, etc. Bjt (479). Researchers of the Eastern Highlands dialects have pointed out that not all similar cases are related only to the deflection of the strike (cf. Zinkevičius 1979: 90). First of all, this applies to the forms of the singular noun, genitive, pronoun and plural suffix that are pronounced in the root of nouns of the second (rarely fourth) accent. In non-accentuated speeches, the forms of these vowels tend to be pronounced in the stem (75 cases out of 109), e.g.: su susijędu, kolkųzi, buran.kus, lupų∙nas, sijė∙nus Ds (212), mrrkvas, ma.kų∙kla, darbinų∙ku, kolkųzi, blų∙nus, merėtes, sėdus Prv (413), ma.kų∙kla, sijė∙nus, višū∙kus Mdk (481) and others. The appearance of na.r∙gus, ka.p∙stus Tlm (311), agukus, kn.gas, rzus, vastus Trg (346), stem-pronounced forms is primarily related to the morphological alignment of the accent ma.k∙klas, rbus, sta.v∙kla Int (480), su didu, barav∙kus, ragutlas, rbus, paradigm. Ana11 For example, the description of the Spitran-Shnekt states that “the process of de-impingement has already affected this dialect. In some words two accents are clearly heard” (Urbanavičiūtė 1966). 12 In the Western Highlands, the type of lateral interjection – the “double-vertical” interjection – was first discovered and described by the Lithuanian linguist A. A. Stulginskis. Aleksas Girdenis (Girdenis 1978: 75–76). 13 Tikėtina, kad XX a. 6–7 deš. uteniškių patarmėje aptariamas reiškinys buvo nevienodo
186 GENDRINĖ KALBA | 97 logically, these forms tend to be pronounced in other Altai dialects as well (see Grumadienė 1994: 101–104; Mikulėnienė 1996: 149; Urbanavičienė 2006: 220; Ragaišienė 2010: 53; 2019: 11 and others). It should be mentioned that the forms in question in the Utenis dialect can testify to both the tendency to detract from the accent and to the paradigm alignment, cf. In the Spitrn dialect, where cases of the "two-pointed" accent have been found, forms with blan∙nu, with kariattu, kruuppas, teekkùs have been recorded. In particular, the stem accent tends to be generalized in the penultimate syllable of words, which is based on a long vowel or ie, uo (weak conditional accent deduction). At the very eastern and southeastern edge of the Uteniškiai area, the pronunciation system may also be influenced by Polish, and less frequently by Gudi languages (see LKTCH 2004: 123; Geržotaitė, Meiliūnaitė 2014, XIV map). The formation of a paradigm of constant pronunciation in these dialects is also related to the tendency to align the paradigm with the example of the Slavic languages, i.e. a gradual transition to a model of two types of pronunciation – column and terminal (Zinkevičius 1966: 31; Mikulėnienė 1995: 450; Tuomienė 2005: 65–69; Urbanavičienė 2006: 221 and others). According to the paradigm of colony pronunciation, newly arrived words are also pronounced in the investigated dialect (Markevičienė 1999: 16; DST 2013: 24; MLT 2019: 24; cf. Bacevičiūtė 2004: 27; Urbanavičienė 2006: 220; 2010: 177). For example, polysyllabic nouns of the ā root tend to generalize the dominant paradigmic accent, e.g.: mãšina Vb (142), Krš (149), Svb (150), Avl (213), Blč (347), Sgn (379), Int (480), be mãšinos Drš (172), po mãšina Bjt (479) / mašėnos Zr (244), mašėną Int (480), mašėnom Prv (413), ganýkla Rb (177), mokýkla Prv (413), Bjt (479), Int (480), vãlanda Bč (121), Rg (178), Jnš (506) / hour Lks (120). Not all forms of the root pronunciation of consonant words are related to the retraction of the accent, the alignment of the accent paradigm, or the formation of the column type of pronunciation. It is likely that some of them can be inherited from the old. This applies primarily to the root-pronounced singular noun forms of the adjectives of the two-syllable u stem baassus, -i, brángus, -i, lýgus, -i, suñkus, -i, etc. (Skardžius 1935: 140–145; Būga 1961: 78; Vanags 1990: 75–81; Lazauskaitė 1998: 65–70). 20th Century Fox. pp. 6–7. they were more often pronounced at the root, e.g.: bausus, -i Sgn (379), Mlt (451), Kkt (380), bausus Avl (213)14, baassi Bjt (479) / baisùs, -i Bjt (479), baisùs Ds (212), Lln (344), Blč (347), Pst (453), Jnš (506); brángus, -i Ds 14 In answering the questionnaires, the forms of both genus are not always indicated. Some forms are found in stories.

It is understood that there is no way to reliably determine which cases are associated with the abduction of the accent, and which have arisen as a result of the formation of a constant accent paradigm, by analogy or inherited from the past. It is likely that the phenomena discussed are interrelated and operate in the council on a blanket principle. An example of the interaction of these phenomena in the Utena dialect is the noun žmõgus, žmõgaus Lkm (415), žmõgus, žmõgum Ob (148) / žmogùs Krn (179), Atz (211), Vlč (240), Brč žmogus kirčiavimas, pvz.: žmõgus Lkš (120), Rk (147), Svb (150), Krn (179), Alk (180), Atz (211), Brč (245), Ut (308), Ld (312), Pst (453), Mdk (481), (245), Ld (312), Pst (453), Gdr (504), žmogùs, žmogaũs Rg (178), Blč (347), žmogaũs Rk (147), Svb (150), Alk (180), žmoguų Ob (148). M. Daukša’s writings and the 1605 catechism show that the variation in the pronunciation of this word may have historical presuppositions (Skardžius 1935: 124; Zinkevičius 1975: 26–27). In sentences with the accent from the short end to the long syllable, forms that are pronounced in the root may have also appeared newly, e.g. žmõgus / žmogaũs Rk (147), Svb (150) and others. The analogy of the human pronunciation of the noun form of the root count. 2.2.Words of feminine genitive in the Utenis dialect are usually pronounced according to one accent paradigm, e.g.: kráutuvė Vlč (240), Brč Rb (177), Ut (308), Lb (414), Kmn apibendrinimas gali būti aiškinamas priebalsinio kamieno žmuõ ir daugi- (278), iš laškõs „from bed“ Skd (378), markà „place to dip linen (e.g. peat); linmarka“, markõn Rb (177), markõs, markõn Vdn (450), iš markõs Mdk (481), pirkià, pirkiõs, pirkiõj, pirkiõn Tlm (311), Sgn (379), Blč (347), Lb (414), Vdn (450), Pst (453), 15 Non-verbal forms of adjectives are also (245), Pst (453), kráutuvė, kráutuvėn Šlt (173), Grs (412), Bjt (479), kráutuvėj pronounced two-way in the adverb, e.g.: baisù Vsk (241), Blč (347), Skd (378), Kkt (380), Pst (453) / baassu Sgn (379), Arn (526), brángu Vlč (240), Lb (414), sunkù Vsk (241), Brč (245), Skd (378), Kkt (380), Lb (414), Vdn (450) / suñku Brč (245), Mdk (481), Gdr (504), šviẽsu Grs (412), Vdn (450), skaadru, suñku / baisù, bjaurù, skaudù, tylù Vlč (240).

The two-pronounced forms found in the same speech confirm that several interrelated factors led to the emergence of pronunciation variants. Some variants may have historical assumptions (related to the reconstructable model of the simple and copulative plural), others – newly arisen (explicable by the declination of the accent, the formation of the paradigm of column pronunciation, the analogy of accentuation). The data in the table shows another important point. The pronunciation of the masculine type of the word varies more in the Uteniškiai dialect. Women are less likely to have an accentuated variant, and are usually pronounced according to a single accentuated paradigm.

196 GENERAL LANGUAGE | In 97 conversations a number of double-pronounced forms of conjugated words were also found (Ragaišienė 2010: 139). It is assumed that in the eastern dialects of the Highlands there is a small, uniform area where variantity as a phenomenon is the most intense compared to neighboring dialects. Based on the material of manuscript sources alone, it is not possible to reliably determine the distribution of variants in different sub-areals. SUMMARY 2000-2001 Eastern Conference 6th-7th place. The following conclusions can be drawn from the analysis of the pronunciation of conjugated words found in manuscript sources: 1. In the Eastern Highlands Utenis dialect, different accentuation patterns are characteristic for the masculine and feminine conjugation types – ā stem words are pronounced according to the baritone conjugation model, ē stem nouns have more common terminal conjugation forms, masculine conjugation stem words are characterized by a tendency to accentuate variants and oxytonese. 2. the system of pronunciation of interjections is influenced by a complex of interrelated factors: the formation of the law of more intensive conditional digression, the equalization of the accent paradigm and the formation of two types of pronunciation – column and terminal; analogy of Vedic accentuation of words of the same root and type of verb; strain interaction. The emergence of differently pronounced forms of masculine conjugation type nouns and the tendency to oxytonesis is related to the paprastosios ir kuopinės – akcentiniu ir semantiniu modeliu. Akcentuacijos sistemos raidai poveikį daro ir senovinio kirčiavimo reliktų (šakreconstructable preservation of two plurals – nin-pronounced u-root adjectives, copulative plural forms. In terms of accentuation variantity, the pronunciation system of the Utenis dialect can be considered as stable (pronunciation affinities in the ta mažiau nei pusėje tirtų punktų; daugumoje jų užrašyta tik po vieną ar du atvejus). Įvairiai kirčiuojamos žodžių formos patarmės plote pasame dialect are distributed unevenly – most of the forms that are pronounced twice in the same dialect were found in the southeastern edges of the Utenis dialect area, on the border with Vilnius dialect).

Vilija Ragaišienė. linksniuojamųjų žodžių kirčiavimo polinkiai XX a. 6–7 dešimtmečių rytų aukštaičių uteniškių šnektų rankraštiniuose šaltiniuose 203 VILIJA RAGAIŠIENĖ ACCENTUATION TENDENCIES OF DECLINABLE WORDS IN THE MANUSCRIPT SOURCES OF THE EASTERN AUKŠTAITIAN SUBDIALECT OF UTENA FROM THE 1950S–1960S Summary The article analyzes the material from the manuscript sources of the Eastern Aukštaitian subdialect of Utena dating from the 1950s–1960s, which are stored in the Dialect Archive of the Centre of Geolinguistics at the Institute of the Lithuanian Language, from the perspective of accentuation. The study takes a synchronic approach to describe the features of accentuation of declinable words of references and found in these sources and to discuss their accentuation tendencies. The article consists of an introduction, three chapters, conclusions, and lists abbreviations of inhabited settlements. The first chapter presents the research material. The second chapter investigates the accentuation tendencies of declinable words and discusses the factors influencing the variation in the accentuation of word forms. The third chapter provides a list of word forms with dual accentuation found within the same local dialect and discusses the distribution of these variants across the subdialect area. The study resulted in three main findings. First, different accentuation patterns are characteristic of the masculine and feminine declension types in the Eastern tuation pattern, while ē-stem nouns are more commonly stressed on the ending; Aukštaitian subdialect of Utena: ā-stem words tend to follow the barytone accenwords of the masculine-declension stems typically exhibit a tendency towards accentual variability and oxytone accentuation. Second, the accentuation system of tion of a more intense rule of conditional stress retraction, the levelling of accentual paradigms, and declinable words is influenced by a complex of interconnected factors: the formathe development of two accentuation types – columnar and inflectional; the analogy of accentuation for words of the same stem and derivatives of the same derivational type; the interaction between stems; the preservation of ancient accentuation relics (such as root accentuation in u-stem adjectives, collective plural forms); the accentual and semantic model of two plural forms (simple and collective) is reconstructed. Third, variously stressed word forms are distributed unevenly across the subdialect area – the majority of the forms with dual accentuation within the same local dialect were found in the southeastern edges of the subdialect area of Utena, near the boundary with the Vilnius dialect. Thus, from the perspective of accentual variability, the accentuation system of the Eastern Aukštaitian subdialect of Utena can be considered stable (accentual variability).
