LITHUANIA. VITŲ KALBOTYROS KE AUS L MALT LIER V. O S T S R Academies of Science Lazūnų! TARMES TEXT J. SENKUS About the main characteristics of the dialect see the article “Some characteristics of the Lazūnų dialect” (Lithuanian TSR Journal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences A, 1, 183-194, 1958). Additional and broader knowledge or individual interpretations are expected to be given later. The texts presented here are recorded in 1952-1955 from the following dialect representatives (Jūrėtiškių raj., Belarusian SSR, 1952-1955). TSR): Audzevičiūtės Viktorija, b. 1892 m., Dervagių (Dievergių, Gervagių) k., Buikos Juzepos, b. 1872, Lazūnų k., Jarmalavičienės Antaninos, b. 1856, Lazūnų k., Kemeišio Jono, b. 1912, Ūosiagirių k., Maceikienės Marijos, b. 1870, Joskūnų (Jaskūnų, Jaskevičių) k., Labočiaus Juziuko, b. 1884 1889, Pasalii (Pūsalio) k., Varnelio (Varnelės, Varaniuko) Jono, born 1902, Pasalių k. Texts written by A. Laigonaitė, J. Paulauskas and the author of these lines. The latter had to prepare them for the press, removing some inconsistencies, ambiguities… Part of the inconsistencies, especially that is the dialect itself, had to be left. A glossary of rarer words and Slavic borrowings has also been added. In the texts presented here, phonetic transcriptions have been used only for some of the most essential characters different from those of the literary language, e.g.: 64, 4, I, a', e* (not pronounced long). In some respects, they are also important for dialect phonetics. In addition, these texts are significant in some other respects, such as folklore, history, ethnography. As can be seen from these texts and from the article, the dialect of Lazūnai and the neighbouring villages belongs to the pointinky dialect of the Dzūki. Both of these phonetic features are quite pronounced, although, Of course, there are regular and unregular exceptions. The phonetics of the language of some dialect representatives is more distorted and corrupted, others — less, but in all of them there is already a very marked influence of Belarusian and Polish languages. Ji 1 Local people pronounced Lazūnai, Lazūnus (Laziinai, Lazūnai). Some believe that I should be writing Hazelnuts (plg. pronunciation laze on the spot 1k, /azda), but until the etymology of this placename is finally clarified, it is written here Lazūnai, Plg, the above-mentioned article and P. Arumaa, Litauische mundartliche Texte aus der Wilnaer Gegend, Dorpat, 1930, 215
are obviously visible in the dictionary. Valuable material for the history and dialectology of the Lithuanian language is provided by the dialect morphology —especially the surviving forms of the four locals and the imperative pronoun. Some of them are also significant for comparative linguistics. Of the texts presented here, perhaps, the most valuable are those written by the representatives of the dialect of the villages Pasaliai and Dervagiai: because these villages are probably the most Lithuanian of all the above mentioned, although only the old people know or speak Lithuanian better. “Lazūnų dialect” and “Lazlyn dialect texts” are referred to here from tradition. In the villages mentioned, the inhabitants of which wrote the texts given here, the official language of the people is Belarusian. In addition, many of the inhabitants of these villages also speak Polish or Russian, but a significant part of these inhabitants consider themselves Lithuanians, and some — Poles. Almost all of them are local. It is noticeable that some locals, who do not know Lithuanian, call it Žagūnų and Žagūnska kalba, as if to ridicule it, to humiliate it. As already mentioned, there are many, especially phonetic, inconsistencies in the texts presented here. They arose mainly because: 1) the language of the dialect representatives themselves and of the texts authors is characterized by this (often even the same person pronounces the same thing differently), 2) the texts are written by more than one person (writer), and we know that in such a case there are always differences. The same applies in part to texts recorded on a tape recorder. When preparing the texts for the press, only the greatest and most obvious differences were tried to be smoothed out, for example, the hardening of some consonants, but even this was done with caution, usually only after consulting with representatives of the dialect who had come from those surroundings and now live in Vilnius, for example, with J. Maceika—from Lazūnų k. and J. Petrauskas—from Daunorių (Dauroniūų) k. * * * There were three brēlei: two razumni, three dufnius. There were many people who fell, and Asilko hurt them, and there was nothing to do with them. They are caught by a group of people, and the two go after them.
