LITHUANIAN KALBOTYROS QUESTIONS V LrErETUVOS TSR NEW DATA FROM TOPONIMY A. VANAGAS In 1961, participants and collaborators of dialectological-toponym expeditions organized by the Institute of Lithuanian Language and Literature collected the toponyms of more than 800 villages. In total, about 6,000 place names have been recorded, some of which have been unknown until now. For some long-known names, new ir variants have been found, which can help to better explain the formation and semantics of the place name. For practical purposes, the collected material is useful in that it will allow to clarify several dozen now known distorted place names, ji mainly names of inhabited places. That some of the names listed here can really be valuable for various comparative etymologies, perhaps, at least in part, we will be able to notice the following few ir remarks: Lake name ĄAriglis, used next to the glorified iš gender ir iš Uglis (plg. let. English Russian. y20.16), has another variant, albeit almost forgotten — Yours, Lake Aigls, is in a group of several lakes, in which another, quite nearby, lake is called Ours. Both names — Yours ir Ours is very — associated with the su adjectives yours ours. ir The analogy of these two commonly used common words may have influenced the names of the lakes Yisis and Muis. It may be assumed that the name Jūsis due to the aforementioned analogy could have arisen from *Juosis, whose root they-, perhaps, we could compare with the bengali word judsti "black", judsvas "not quite black". Then the names Ariglis and *Juosis, perhaps, could be considered as synonyms. In this case, the name of the lake Aiglis would have a figurative meaning. It is remarkable that one local old Russian, well knowing the names of all the lakes of the group, still feels the semantics of the name of the lake Aiiglis and explains without question that it is "uėpnbiė, black". The name of the forest Asinis, pronounced asinis, can be compared with the names of the rivers Asinis (Sasnava, Vabalkšnės int.), Asytė (Imbradas, in Auslo ežeras) and other idionyms* of this root, whose word beginning a some write with a nose and compare it with the adjective ąsd. If the name of the forest Asinis had something to do with ąsd, then local people would pronounce it as *ūsinis. Dėl Asinis plg. asys =asiūklis. For Blood mš., Blood up. semantics! The name of the meadow Sdlvis is inseparable from the common, rarely used in literary language, word salvėti "to work, to work, to flow" (Daugai, Nemunaitis), salvėjimas "Yašėjimas" (Linkuva). Name of the river Apstė || Apsta (Vilkyškiai, Jūros int.) will add to the group of Lithuanian hydronysu ms associated with lit. Apis mellifera, lat. apse, pr. abscess. The name of the meadow Spuigé is particularly interesting. In the Lithuanian Language and Literature Institute- 's "Lithuanian Language Dictionary" the general word spuigė "meadow, which in spring is flooded by water" is recorded from the same area (Žemaitkiemis): there will be little hay in the sprouts, because in spring there was little water. It is difficult to say whether the name of the meadow Spuigė is derived from the adjective spuigė, or whether the adjective spuigė is something else than a commonly used real name. More than generic or actual words with the root spuigso far, it seems, are unknown. The name of the lake Striūgis is the first hydronym of this root in our nomenclature. It is associated with the adjective striūgas "short", striūgis "trampasis" (Šakyna), striugėti "trampėti" (Radviliškis), stringinti "trampinti" (Gruzdžiai). For semantics, see plg. Trumpė river (1. Eržvilkas, Vidaujos c. 2. Gargždai, Žvelsos dš. 3. Jurbarkas, Kamės int., etc.). The name of the mountain Zasiūtė, pronounced zašūta., next to Zasa hill, the single-seater name Zasiniškis due to the beginning of the word z may be of Sėliškų origin. Especially interesting is the name of the river Gala. The root -gal-, which often occurs in place names, mainly in the names of residential places, has been explained by linguists on several occasions. K. Būga associated the second component -gala of the names of inhabited places with the Lithuanian adjective galas, Latin gals meaning "KOoHel, OKpecTHOCTb, OOjnacTb"*, R. Šmitlein wrote extensively about Lithuanian place names with -gala, comparing the root -gala with lit. galia, galėti.*. Recently, V. Gudelis published an article* on place names with -gal, in which he gave his own original, albeit not entirely linguistically motivated, -galetimology of the root. According to V. Gudelis, the pre-Baltic form gala could mean “water, wet place, swamp, swamp”*. The name of the river in Pakruojis region, Gala, will be the first single-vowel non-verbal -galupe-substantive in the Lithuanian nomenclature, and, apparently, it will be significant for further explanation of the -gal-semantic of place names. Varėnos raj. Dubiči apyl. until now the noble name of the lake was known as Lynežeris ečžeras. The name of this lake Lynas, written this year, suggests the following sequence of the emergence of Lynejeris lake: Lynas ežeras —Lynežeris ežeras —> Lynežeris k. —Lynežerio &%eras. "Lincoln Lynch". "Blazer" (in Polish). Very interesting parallels are recorded for the name of the city and river Viešvilė: Viešvilvė, Viešulvė, cf. The name is derived from the local name for the village, "Groenendaal" (Groenendaal in Dutch). Now it is not easy to say which of the three forms — Viešvilė Viešvilvė, Viešulvė — is older, which is primary and which is derivative, but the very existence of these variants destroys the well-known description of the river name Viešvilka and -2 given by R. Šmitleinas. SR. Smitlein states that the locals sometimes (and not always, as R. Šmitlein believes), the form of the river name Viešvilka is old, and the town name Viešvilė no longer has the formant -ka because the locals Germans have dropped it. He divides the surname Viešvilka into two parts, viešir -vilka and -vilka, and compares it with the Lithuanian adjective velka "walka", Latin valks "upokšnis". It seems to us that in the river name Viešvilka, there is no -vilk-, -velk-, -valknėra, and the formant -kyra is newly appeared, as it often appears in other Lithuanian river names (see Upėlė —Upėlka, Vabūlė —Vabdlka, Vyžuona —Vyžūnka, Žiežmara —Žiežmarka, Akmena —Akmėnka), so for the interpretation should be chosen not Viešvilka, but Viešvilė || Viesvilvé || Viešulvė. Several names of places of residence now known to the local people and officially used are written in other variants or older genders, e.g. : Baltūniškė k. Švenč.
