Russian-Lithuanian-English Dictionary of Computing Technology Terms, Vilnius, 1971, 600 p. 1. Three years ago the list of Lithuanian terminology dictionaries was supplemented by another new term dictionaries. It was prepared by a collective of authors — a group of engineers of the Vilnius V. Lenin calculating machine factory and the special design office of calculating machines. It is a comprehensive dictionary of computational technology terms, including some technical and physics terms in addition to special terms in this field. Both in volume and type, it differs greatly from previous Lithuanian dictionaries of technical terms, for example, A. Novodvorskis’s “English-Lithuanian Dictionary of Technical Terms”. * Synonyms for the genus are given below. Lithuanian language atlas (Leksika), I, on the map 84 (printable), 253 of the Lithuanian Polytechnic Dictionary (1958), the Russian-Lithuanian Polytechnic Dictionary (1959) and others. The appearance of this dictionary was caused by the rapid progress in the construction and production of computational technology in our republic. The establishment of calculating services in the Lithuanian SSR began in 1954, and by the end of 1969 there were about 200 calculating offices, 30 calculating stations, about 11,000 keyboard and 79 sets of perforating calculating machines. Perforating computing complexes, powerful fast-acting electronic calculating machines with software control, were used in the computing centres for processing economic information. At present, the latter machines are “successfully used to solve the following tasks: technical preparation of production; operational planning, accounting and management of production; normative organization and management of the farm; technical economic planning; keeping accounts of materials and raw materials, wages, produced output, scrap; statistical and accounting tasks, etc. : mathematical and engineering, linear programming, network planning, etc. Along with new computing technology, many new devices, various mechanisms and their parts, concepts related to work and auxiliary processes, etc., appeared. Specialists faced with an obvious lack of Lithuanian computational technology terms?. The Russian terminology of computational technology began to be systematized and standardized a little earlier. In the 1960s and 1970s, several terms in this field appeared Zodyny®. The compilers of the Lithuanian dictionary of computational technology terms relied on them, and it is clear that our dictionary in some respects (e.g., in terms of lexicographical technique) is similar to the Russian ones, especially to the dictionary of computational technology terms edited by academician S. Lebedev. However, in general, the Lithuanian dictionary of computational technology terms should be regarded as an original, not a translated work. In this review we will examine the structure of the dictionary, some peculiarities of the terminology it contains and make some general methodological remarks. In the preface, the authors indicate the purpose and objective of the dictionary, namely: to facilitate the use of technical literature in the Russian language, which is faced with scientific and technical workshops, especially young students, and “to form and standardize Lithuanian technical terminology”. A priori, it can be said that the first task was better accomplished than the second: the dictionary is generally more suitable for translation purposes than for the need to standardize terms. Undoubtedly, in this respect, the mentioned Russian dictionaries of computational technology terms, in which the standardization of terms is also not a primary task, had an influence. For example, in S. Lebedev’s dictionary of computational technology terms, English terms are very often translated with 2-3 Russian synonyms. In this dictionary the Russian term often has 3—4 ir even 5—6 Lithuanian equivalents. This means that all the attention of the dictionary authors was devoted to the most accurate translation of the Russian term. 2. 0. The largest part of the dictionary consists of computational terms in Russian, Lithuanian and English. ir The most ir commonly used or closest meanings are listed in the first place of the Lithuanian English equivalents, followed by synonyms according to o the shades of the meanings, which are separated from each other by commas. More distant values are separated by a semicolon. In addition to some Lithuanian equivalents, notes and abbreviations explaining or specifying the ir scope of use of the term are presented in italics, e.g.: onucamenb progr. description mark declarator onpedenumocmo (166)! log. definability (167) Optional affixes of ir Lithuanian English terms are given in square brackets, e.g.: ncdaenenue (nu)slopinimas suppression, guendring paccmanoexa is(si)désiymas (196) ordering, arrangement, spacing, disposition (244) Term variants are enclosed in square brackets, e.g.: cxpeimoe cocmoanue hidden state latencystate (288). The Pratarmie states that if a Russian term has several Lithuanian (and also English) equivalents with different meanings, they are separated by Arabic digits. Not completely consistent nesting system in Lithuanian registry. Lithuanian terms are not pronounced. These, of course, are not the advantages of the structure of the dictionary, but its disadvantages. 2.1 A term in any field must be verbally correct, unambiguous, short, precise and easy to use. However, very often at least one or even several of these characteristics are lacking in the terms. One of the most important shortcomings of terminology is synonymy. In the dictionaries of terms, only one, at most two (one Lithuanian, another international) terms should be used for each term, but not 4-6 synonyms, which do not provide any additional information to the terminology, but only indicate either insufficient standardization, or that the terms presented in the dictionary are not fully terminologized. In the LSI, one composite term often has two Lithuanian species names, one of which as if explains, clarifies the other. Such use is justified in some cases. Such a method of shortening terms is acceptable in the ir practice of standardization of terminology, which is currently widespread in technology, especially physics. However, for reasons of significant differentiation alone (longer form means more abstract concept, shorter one o more — concrete) it is not worth making all possible endings of neologisms — -is or derivatives, -a which in — most cases replace or adjectives abstract suffix su -umas, or verb suffixes -it's abstract. The CSS contains many new concepts of computational technology, which required the creation of a number of novelties. Such values as: leading (= main) frequency (Russian: sadaowan wacmoma) 369; integer programming (Russian: ųencuucnennoe npoepammupoeakue) 229; given size (Russian: Oannas eenusuna) 23; (over) given limit (Russian: sadannbiūiė npeden) 208; given accuracy (Russian: sadanras mceunccmo) 319; automatic plotter (= plotter) 371; current extractor (Russian: moKoctēmHuK) 318, etc., should be considered as non-creative and not quite understandable. The authors of the dictionary have unnecessarily "improved" some familiar terms: lingv. dropping (Russian: onyckanue, English: dropping) 167 omission, ellipse (syntax, lexicology), dropping (morphology, phonetics); reliability (Russian: docmoseprocme 60, dosepumeasrocms 46, 208) instead of certainty (somewhere —reliability) and others. 3.2. Some of them can be transformed, while others are not at all suitable for the dictionary. 4. The dictionary does not avoid editorial inconsistencies. For example, it too often confuses two different punctuation marks, namely the hyphen and the hyphen. Unconsidered correlation of the conjunction and the above-mentioned punctuation marks when connecting the elements of homogeneous composite terms. For example, it says input and output restriction system 276, input and output control 329, but input —output control system 276, input —output device set 102, input —output block 18, etc. The hyphen is an appropriate punctuation mark in such compound terms as: addition-subtraction summer 286, multiplication-division device 345, etc., but it is not appropriate, for example, in such terms as: start-stop time 33, up-down method 134, etc. It is not clear why the regulator “yes-no” 251 is written, but the operator “and—no” 164, the n-type semiconductor 202, but the filter “m” type 356, the operator “or” 163, “OR—1R”, OR —OR —OR” 300, but the logical operations AND-NO 81, OR-OR 77, etc. Such irregularities could have been easily eliminated, 17* 259 5. The reviewed dictionary — a expected and necessary work. We can only be pleased that the engineers of the Vilnius Calculation Machine Factory and the Special Design Office of Calculation Machines took on such a huge task. SKŽ well represents the current Lithuanian terminology of computational technology. However, the extensive vocabulary material is still poorly standardized and systematized. This work is only a good start for the work of developing the terminology of computational techniques. It will not only be an example of enthusiastic work for other technical dictionaries, but also a foundation on which to build even more perfect dictionaries. B. Laumane, Zivju nosaukumi latviešu valoda, Riga, 1973, 307 p.* The monograph of Benita Laumane is very relevant not only for Latvian, but also for the linguistics and ethnogenesis of the Baltics and Indo-Europeans, since a large number of fish names have been inherited from ancient times. This monograph is the first major study of the names of white fish. B. Laumanė notes that P. Tymė, based on the fact that salmon live only in the Baltic Sea basin, and related names are found in Slavic, Baltic, Germanic, as well as Tocharian languages, tried to prove that id. ancestor was in the Baltic region. This hypothesis is related to the issue of the Baltic Sea coast aboriginals, which the author mentions in several places. B. Laumane, based on the opinion of archaeologists that the Balts or their ancestors moved to the Baltic Sea area around the 18th century BC? and here they established contacts with other inhabitants of the southeastern Baltic coast —aborigens, who, in the author’s opinion?, perhaps were Indo-Europeans related to the Balts, and Ugro-Fins (p. 14). The hypothesis that the Baltic aborigines were Indo-Europeans is very important for the question of the ethnogenesis of the Balts and Indo-Europeans. At the moment, it is particularly supported by some people." In the Mesolithic period, Eastern Baltic was characterized by two cultural (and, in Rimantiene’s opinion, ethnic) groups: microlithic-macrolithic and Kundas. The microlithic-macrolithic culture belonged to Lithuania and partly to Belarus. The Kund culture was widespread in the areas of present-day Estonia and Latvia, while in Lithuania it only affected the northernmost part of the country. 1 The review, due to its limited scope, deals only with the issue of the Baltic Sea coast aboriginals, raised in B.
