LITHUANIAN LANGUAGE SYNTACSIS STUDIES QUESTIONS OF LITHUANIAN LINGUISTICS XXV (1986) KAZIMIERAS GARŠVA SYNTACSIS FEATURES AND TEXTS OF LATVIAN LITHUANIAN DIALECTS* 1. INTRODUCTION There are at least 6 ancient Lithuanian dialects in the Latvian SSR: vilniškiai (Ciskodas, Indrica, Uodegénai, etc.), uteiškiai (Subačius, Garšvinė, Aknysta), kupiškėnai (Nėretos), panevėžiškiai (Skyrėnys), šiauliškiai (Ūkrai) and telšiškiai (Vadakstis) (cf. Garšva 1985). ir Ciskodą, all the other schnekts may be the northern continuation of the main Lithuanian language area. Between Ciskodas and Neretu the old people usually call themselves Lietuvninki. All of these schnekts provide a great deal of data for comparative dialectology and the study of contacts between Baltic languages. The texts of Latvian-Lithuanian dialects also supplement our knowledge of dialect syntax. From the peripheral Lithuanian dialects, only Latvian Lithuanian texts have not been published so far; missing in the most complete collections (Lithuanian dialects jų ir 1970; Zinkevičius 1978). Texts shown here are only the ne first, but in many places iš — ir last (during the construction of Daugpilis hydroelectric power plant, Indrica, Augustiniškiai, Misiūnai will be raised and flooded). In 1977—1983, the author recorded 30 tapes in Latvia (recording duration — 25 hours). Many of the texts were encrypted by the authors, some (for greater accuracy) by university lecturers A. Girdenis. (No. 28), O. Kosienė (No. 8, 22, 23), B. Stundžia (No. 7, 24). We use the usual transcription and at the same time — as simple as possible. Since Lithuanian prefixes are only in long syllables, the prefix sign of the strong-end in the first syllable ar indicates that the vowel at the base of the accentuated syllable is long, and the first or second component of the diphthong is semilong. Long vowels are marked only in accentuated syllables with a middle suffix (*) and in all unaccentuated syllables. In diphthong with both acute and circumflex signs (di) means the intermediate prelude, extended through both components, in grave o (yes, ai ir etc. etc.) —especially short pronunciation of a sound or some component, reminiscent of a word. a crossing incident. Engraviir ng point low (i.) "There are no equals to the unequals of the unequals- ". When there are two or more accents in a word, the main one is more often- * Best texts for Genovefa Misiūnienė (1891.X.25—1984.V.7) and many others 1 According to the tradition, it is also illogical to mark the balance of pronounced vowels with the sign of the middle preposition (cf. Garšva 1977, 77—78; even earlier J. Kazlauskas and A. Girdenis had come to a similar opinion). 218 this is the last strike (plg. gaidi ir t. t.); lateral consonant in post-consonant sounds, (especially in se extended uo consonants) ir Marking the point at the top. When vowels e against hard consonanir ts vowels a po soft consonants phonetically phonetically ir coincide, it is marked with the same sign — a (@='d), indicating the softness of the consonant in front. Insignificant, often self-evident phonetic ir features are not detailed (they will be discussed in another article). The phonetic characteristics of the texts are not uniform. Pauses between sentences are marked with a single dash between the syntax comma, colon, etc. (/), o — ar Iš from the available texts selected passages ir of more interesting content. Maximum (about a third) of tape recordings are iš Boy. Ciskode parent language only "quoted" in not very coherent texts, so Uodegénai is now the farthest island of the ancient Lithuanians of Latvia, whose very peculiar dialect has been used until now as a means of communication (mainly between G. Localization of locations discussed in detail in the previous article ta (Garšva 1985). 2. SYNtax Features Known J. Endzelyn- (1979 510, 515) as' statement that the syntax of the Latvian language is more reminiscent of Western o Europe (German — language), Lithuanian syntax is more reminiscent of the East (Slapping) vų Most of the differences in syntax between Latvian Lithuanian and other Lithuanian dialects are ne archaisms, but they have been created by the influence of Latvian. Ir However, there is no major difference between the Lithuanian language in both republics. As in the ir adjacent Eastern Highland dialects, in the area between Cisco ir Constructions used in the sections only in the locative ne su (plg. Animals in our church Cs), but ir su adjective: aik tvartan Cs, Aknistén eight kilometers Sbč, péreiti Latvijan Keep going, keep walking Acne, rashes Suvainiškin No, be vidon Screw it. The singular iliative is used in 220 Panevėžys ir dialect, only the final consonant is now usually declined, e.g.: n aik laiika laūkan, šal'n' | "side", li.pk marked | marked ir and so on. Between Uodegény and Eglaitė (in Vilnius and nearby Utena, except perhaps for Ciskodas and Indricas) the locative is confused with the iliative, i.e. the iliative is used very often instead of the locative (especially in Uodegčyna- ), and occasionally the locative is used instead of the iliative, e.g.: bū.va“ tréis tvartėliai: a) vienai karvie, kitan arklys, treciafi aviža's; We're going to have a meal with Zipkalin. vakaran, gi rytah, unksci giéda; darZan pjavie; tvaitan nieka niér, nothing; neighbor in the indie; coming churches b) Dgp; nidja kareiamdj my husband I. Incidentally, these forms are also used in their own place: linūs mina rijdj; imptiolau tan upialin; The sun rises in the sky. Similarly, both localities are expressed in the same forms in the southern Altai dialect (Zinkevičius 1978, 46, 54), and the use of the locative instead of the iliative in the eastern Altai dialect of Latvia was probably explained by the influence of Latvian. (Grinaveckienė 1983, 113—114), In certain Uodegénu sentences, the iliative is used instead of the final, ir indefinite noun, e.g.: rūdenin bū.va' daug mūsiu'; mana: merga pylsie kartan su manim. It is not clear whether the one-time written form nas darbanū "darbas" can be considered an iliative variant. Į north of the line Raguva — Ukmergė — Molčtai — Salakas used abbreviated plural iliative forms, phonetically coinciding with the locative (Zinkevičius 1978, 54): the knight of clubs Cs, evacuating the hood Laukesés Dgp, saws bloom Eg, I'll go visit them Sbč, Uncle Medi.niuos shit I'm getting back on my feet. Naratds No, cheese from a ball Screw it. From the old ones The Latvian Lithuanian language differs only Indrica colonists, often keeping the plural iliative full: dali.na chutarūosna; The punch broke. Bet Uodegčnuose ir plural iliatives (plg. apyniūs sū.dedu vidui tameos burūkuos, latg. tomus buraku's) is occasionally used as a locative (niažomaii, kas tamios namios gyviana). The singular locus is sometimes used instead of the final, the preposition through the final, and in the plural — instead of the noun (especially su numerals), etc.: atneša Svintiej („on Sunday“) piena; pinkiazdiašsim kapaiku diendi (‘per day’) raikia makiét Cs; twenty-ninth $oitu salu; 14th muutuos isala — Dgp:; trijūos, kiaturiūas („three in four“) kūla; trijueces mouse Akn: dteina bladder first adenine; Everyday- 's tearful when I'm not mammy. According to the Latgalian saying gdja ganuws in Uodegén it is said raikia ait gamios, ir ganyt; three days's home, a fourth day's away. Eastern Snektos, it seems, uses three forms ir of adjective superiority, composed of the pronoun itself, the non-comparative form iš itself, the higher grade form of ir substantive adjectives, or the non-comparative plural of adjective superiority forms ko ir jo (plg. Grinaveckienė 1983, 115; the latter not written by ma the author): va.ve.rūsis "vieversys" himself to the first one Dgp; the same as I am In; I'm the oldest in Penny's. Uodegčnuose instead of the usual pronouns I, ta ir in the singular forms of adjectives, nouns and (rarely) ir adjectives of the singular noun: tavim tievas mamu pėni, vaikai manim su nepieniės; and jelū.ja, your drink; now anni me pamitie "left"; Now gi I'm in my own house; a.ny for me for a whisper; ni viéna nié‘ra par savim. 221 Adjectives, impersonal verbs, plural nouns of participants (the latter feature is also written in Subači) are replaced by masculine singular nouns of adjectives or participants, adverbs: man švr|tas kaja.m; fearful unto thee, that thou shouldest not break thy axes; nigiaras bū.va' paričtkas pa Mikalojui, sunkei bū.va'r; never thought that they'd have to separate from their lover's mother; would be loose and still completed buvis; mūža pali.kis taki Zma nig, kas kalbiūt pa lietū.viškei; for sale of cut cactus; bells and bell bells Sbč. In Uodegén, adjectives without a noun are sometimes pronounced (Juzupėliui bū.va' sunk), so their change is recent and originated from the influence of Latvian (see būva' tūmsas, lat. tūmss). A. multiflorum. In masculine forms, the feminine gender is represented only by people who have forgotten more about speaking (cf. Grinaveckienė 1983, 112). Some Eastern Highlanders use not only the iliative but also the adjective after the transitive verbs: eisu nama gi.ltu (1. d.) Cs; néja pū.pu pjdutu; the brother drove away to be found; I wasn't even in the evening. The functions of aim are the same as communication; both forms can be used for the same purpose after the infinitive: kas tau nar ait darytu | raikia ait slūžwit. In the Uodegéns, next to the sangraZinés ending -ūs, wos is used: ais mazgatis | mazgdtuos, vaZuniétuos (in general there is an ending -ies, in the adverbs —iis | wos, cf. nier kū bijaties; bdltiis | bdltuos). Alongside the goal may go the noun's originator. In Lithuanian language, Kupiškis, Anykščiai and a very small part of the neighboring Utena (about Vyžuonas, Alytus, Utena) and Panevėžys (about Vabalninkas) have the siekinį (see Zinkevičius 1966, 390; 1978, 70, 72). In other dialects, the streak has disappeared. In the Vilniškiai dialect, the siekinys is used only in the Latgalian Lithuanian islands of Ciskoda (rarely, recorded in a folk song) and Uodegénai. Rather, it is not a loan, but an archaism, although Latgalians also have the aim (plg. es išu dstu „aš eisiu valgyti“, aizvažie laulotūs „(they) went to get married“, Crpunjja 1908, 48; Endzelins 1982, 587). The ending -uos of the conjugative form does not coincide with the Latgalian -ūs; instead of her Kraslava castle. Latgalians use the ending -ys. It is used by the surviving northern Kupiškis people about Nėretas, Sūsėja. As in ir other places of the eastern Highlands, about Turkey (Grinaveckienė 1983, 119), The name of su the group is derived from ir the phrase "I want to work, I want to talk, I want to talk". In Uodegén, perhaps due to Slavic influence, the singular noun of the verb rasti occurred: kad gale'tumet rast žmogus (but negal rasti žmagaus, find good žma'nius). What's left at home? ir po UK. Apparently, due to the influence of Slavic languages, the noun was sometimes used instead of the ir adjective suffix, the adverbial vowel: tau diosu piragielis ėš Cs; You're na crazy, give me the yellows. bunny niabagidil, a.k.a. barley piglet d.). (1. Throughout the border, due to the influence of Latvian language, the noun turčti is used instead of the noun su construct with the verb būt su (the latter can be omitted): ir braliam žmūna lietūvia bū.va Cs; I have three brūlei bu.va; he will be a brother of Zanith; for us there were three sons to one brother; for all of you, I'm downloading; vaikialoiėnu as much as pa I daiigil; I have a jr bush. Acne; Naratds him be.va center Nr 222 irt.t As can be seen, the verb biti is often moved to the end of the sentence (cf. Krislavas ap. belarusian tata nas litd.vec bul). The word order is changed to emphasize a Word, e.g.: a ki anys man padarjis sianai; he gives the owner a needle to hold; I need to go to sleep. From Aknystė written saying až do. Dr. tiakau joji.s "I had to ride too." In conversation, the consonant constructions of words are often translated into consonants (e.g., anas dalwme avizas diel’ arkliį „horses“; appili su karštu vandeniu), although the opposite is also possible (tam kū.nigui vi.su žėmi atojeme Nr). There are preserved fuller prepositions (nudg, tėrpū), but many of their meanings (adr, nud, etc.) and even the prepositions themselves (aiž, da, pičė starp) are borrowed. Adjectives require the singular noun (za, na, od), the noun (da, do), the adjective (ant, par), the noun and adjective (ažu), the adjective and noun (lig), the plural noun (za, od), the adjective (ažu), the noun (da), the adjective and noun (par), etc. Below are some examples of written prepositional constructions. They are very unequally distributed. aiž, plg. la. behind „behind“: dafžinie bu.va’ ai? kėlia'; Get me out of here. Pasmakria. In Uodegén and Ciskode, aiz (aiz) is used as a preposition and prefix. ait „in, past“: aina un Eglditi, Hukstu Sbč; unt mill carried Skrn; a wind and a sweat to my sister. It is the most commonly used in the mouth and throat, but also in the mouth and throat. The phonetic variant used in Uodegén and Ciskode is na. apliūk „about“: miatu apliūk šešiazdiašimt adgal Dgp. ažū (až) „už, įnagininkas“ ir t. t.: už aZerioka, ažu Skirscinia. Dgp (also compare uzu SkaFdupja. Akn; here the first u may be adapted to the common language); you went out to the man Eg; ažu Subūčiaus Letuva Sbč; he needs to vdikséiat ažu wolku Sbč; tas dédia. pa.jemia. Akn the son of Az; ends up out of the country, leaves after Latvians Akn; isimokia až(ū) múrnika No. da ‘to, until, by, at’: a) brother one stick da tartūkui, da Rigai; does not befriend the father with the mum; naina da piftei, da namais; (b) nitali da Ižvaltui from Viodigiénu; four kilometres to the church; c) in their hands they give to themselves, to their son, their daughter comes to me; with children; d) comes da lungelui. This prefix (and the corresponding prefix) is very common in the Uodegainų dialect. It was borrowed from Slavic languages through the local Latgalian dialect, e.g.: kačia, navar da goldam „cat, not allowed at the table“, da mežam „to the forest“ and so on (see also Endzelins 1982, 602—603). dél: anas dalwe avižas diel’ arklių | atdiviem kovei; atvidie viartini bardnku diel’ kiicias; del siekla's, siéklai Eg; killis for 'duikéiu disappearance Akn; half of the water in the UK. In the same places, next to the construction because + origin «, the noun (+ associative) is also used to indicate the purpose. inl "in, at, in place of": neataja in darba; ataik in mam | mums Cs; in that string are seven cassidens; im pensions. Prefix uZraSytas in Uodegénuose and Ciskode as a substitute for on (aft and in are confused by the eastern people in many places, cf. Zinkevičius 1978, 55). The construction in mums (instead of in mum) is probably vélyvé, which is due to the influence of the Latvian language. 223 lig: lig Daūgavai bū.va Lietuva Dgp; lik Nėretai Akn; lig kar „karū“ Skrn, in Skyrėnai, as in the Panevėžys area of Lithuania, lig is used not with the singular usufructuary but with the nobleman (and nobleman). na „at, in, through (for), servant, deputy“, Zr. ant, in: a) downloaded nu kialma; I was like sitting on a td zla'stana’, being on the ground; sit down; b) you eat, don't be surprised that I'm breaking; now nu (im) pénsijas neėja; jury no bliūda; c) and how much dična's will need makeét? Cs; (d) the amount of the claim is less; e) I could cut it anywhere; when I'm in the sea; You're gonna be crying. man from the crown nowmušie. Phonetically na (nu) may coincide with the prefix from. Semantically, in Uodegén and Ciskode na is on and in the main variant, which seems to be nowhere else written. Probably the prefix is phonetically taken from the Slavic na, o ne un(t) sounds (u and n) exchanged places. In Latgalian, such a loanword is not widespread, e.g.: pialwie nu arudda' nisprūksta —pele uz arūda nesprakst. nud ‘from, from’: a) anas na: iždaiūguva's bū.va'; ruiks sépa nu darba Cs, atvaZava atsipūst na darba; skirties no ma'mute- "s (= with a mammuth); (b) from Lietuvds bū.va atvozavis Cs; žmčūnu atdavede nu Liatuvūs Cs; mist' na repaired; dunkscys bu.va na šaudū; All the moms are dead. The meaning of “from” is taken from Latvian; it is also found on the Lithuanian border (Endzelins 1982, 604—606). With this meaning (Latgalians pronounce nu) are also connected such Uodegény constructions: linus iškūlsta nu spaliu “from linens springs out October”; šdudus išblūgža nuo tū varpytiu "blows those bells out of the straw" (in the conversation the adjective is replaced by the noun from su ir "from" is moved to the nobleman). nuog: stop now many d.) (1. Cs. In the old people's language nudg still occurs in the other ir end of the eastern Highlands for — example, about Liúkuv. paf „per, pas, prie, iš, už, įnagininkas, vietininkas“: by our grandfather’s house a) the railway goes I; jai aš pliotku su par riétais; b) yr shaka for me Cs; the length of a pair of men; ki aš dirbail by tiévu, by mati, tų aš aZmirSaii Cs; Be.va dvi sasaris par jaunésniji brali In; Tindi aš crying for them In (and Gršv); For a day niaStremna burned? ; takiij balii par mum nér(a) Sbč (and Cs, Dgp); already Lithuania par mim isibeiks; par “from” Syderi niatdli Eg; c) stumbled on the table, on the door, on the side; about the grave Saiikias Altkirka; d) the middle saiisiis; ana jauniésnie e) for me; gi dekavajam for klapatais; speak paterus for tals bernia kéliais; anas was a cat, a doctor; the eight f) of spades Skrn; for the neighbor Saiikia Cs; di, g) visaka bu.va: for living; about the middle lyknié; scene moose first, little one on the middle door Acne (per average "in the middle" ir means about Zeimeli, plg. Šliavas 1972, 430). The value of “Pas” is ne written only par, but pas ir iš to self-submitted Daigpilio apyl. (Gryvojé, Kalkuonéje, Medinė, Grendzoj¢), Subačiuje, Aknystojé (and Many of them. ). Such usage may rather be authentic, taken from the common o ne language of iš the user. ‘Par’ ‘pas’ may be used with the meaning of up to A lot. Po prefix par (pas) pronouns may have a different vowel than other nouns. 100 mg/ day po The tails have a ne tailpiece (like all others), but the servant (as in Latvian, cf. Kabelka 1975, 136, 208): for what kidltava's, for what money; for you left me "at jį leaves me"; I'm gonna find the 224 choirs. In the plural after par (pas) the innagininkas is most often used (Ciskodas, Uodegčnai, Gryva, Subačius, Aknysta; Skyrėnys, Ūkrai), but in isolated areas (Indrica, Grendza, Garšvinė) the galininkas is also used. The constructions of the type kas par (per) + nominative (finalis) (cf. a kas čia par arklinku Dgp, paZureiet, kas par mūrkva'- m) in Lithuanian and Latvian are borrowed, apparently, from Polish (cf. co za) or German (cf. was fiir, Endzelins 1982, 610). In Uodegčynas, the compound par kū (in Turku — ažu kū) means "why": par kū so little did you eat? ; What's wrong with you? "I'm a little bit shy," she says, "but I'm a little bit shy because I'm a little bit shy." after "po": a tiévas neZwinaii kiek miatu gyviana paskui mamaūs. po: vadziūja pa dzidziji kėli "on the great road". In Uodegén and Ciskode, pa is also said for Latvian (-u) and so on. prič „at, about, by“: (a) a plug to the tiévai; at the very Ėglainiai giviūna Eg; kri.ta žemėje prie būlai Sbč; neldide buy land at the border Akn; to the kialmais plug Dgp; b) eats the flesh of the sheep at the mine “about autumn, autumn”; to the evening "about the evening, in the evening" temperature of the keel; c) it has already rained many times at us. Between Indrica and Aknystė after the prefix prie the singular noun is used, in Vadakstė (in the Žemaičių area) —kilmininkas (near Žagūra), at least about Greifidza, Subačiai —plural įnagininkas, Vadakstyjė —kilmininkas (near pony). In Uodegén and especially about Ciskoda, instead of pie is said latviešu pie. prė: piérmala pra girnam ‘girnomis’; Guys. You're flying out at 6:00. tėrpū: terpu mum kalbe't, sūnus labai aukšttai savim niaša. Used between Ciskodas and Subačius with the singular noun (in Uodegén —and with the servile); terpu savy Cs (Būga 1911), tid.rpu sa.vi Dgp may be a progenitor with a fallen s (cf. sa.vis —Uodegénai, savis —Mēdinas). According to Latvian, in Skyrénys it is said sdva starp’, in Subači —storpa. In Ciskode, Uodegėčuose, the adverbs of comparative compounds phonetically coincide with kai: aina (būsi) kai pardiiota Cs; eyes when you goosebumps; when with biazdalu stink; thouks when a wolf is there; eat sand when it's home; also plg. I worked when (= sl. kak) kitchen girl Vdks. Sometimes it is pronounced ka" (compare La. kū "as"): tūkie ka' šarmū.kšne lapai. The conjunction used in the present tense: šūk Sak jauna mėrgę, kūlaik vaniukūota Cs; i da grūba daršisime, kalaik mirsime; but plg. kėlai (= kolei) triobas sukélam - Oh, my God. As in Latvian, the conjunction what is used in the meaning of “which” (sometimes performs the same function as where); nier takiį Zmaniy, kas pa lietuviškai pakalbètu; helps the mother who is sick; son, who helps Lithuanian, who grows up with native language; the wolf that cuts the e'riuks; those kiaturi were such, who (where) talidėja. pa lietū.višku Cs (and cf. where the damage is broken, that is broken; tables are broken, where the dude is broken). In the same Uodegén, the conjunction "who, which" is also known: kurd's supūvielox [bul'ba's], aran. The texts contain connective sentences with interconnected conjunctions, but more connective sentences of this kind, cf. : a) you're a tree, you're a man, you're a tree, you're born.he? ; who goes to the church, who leaves the house; where the tapes were kept; b) that if you turn around, your mouths will nick Dgp; the children don’t know what I’m going to do; Whoever you like, you'll take; when I was young, I was strong Dgp; when sū.veria nytys, it 225 diūda skietan; as soon as it begins to flow [milk], it is kri. ZiSkal pamčlži Acne; as jr, so is gyviana.m (... giar); ki you do, as jr, so yr; what you understand, what you eat; what I ate, that is the giral; as much as I could, as much as possible; as many roses as you wear, so many roses as you wear; where ours is not, you are good; a fuel sieklai, ti sieklai. The conjunctions used are that... that, when... then, when... that, how... that, how... so, who... that, what... that, believe... believe, when... there, which... that, etc., etc. A certain substitute for the conjunctions when... it could be when... so (so the sentence is separated, reinforced, emphasized): when young were.m, so neighbors were. Acne. The words nei, tai, ten, tiek, etc., which are used more frequently than in common language (cf. Lietuvių kalbos gramatika 1976, 842), can be omitted without affecting the meaning of the sentence: pridét ni atimt nianoriu Dgp; already a cloth, why are you a yarn; places to live, not sacks to sew Sbč; It's been a long time. ; where the duck is a hop, the rascal goes Dgp; grėbia with both runka.m, as much as he will. 3, TEXT Cisco Code 1. GARŠVA SYNTACTICAL FEATURES OF LITHUANIAN DIALECTS IN LATVIA AND TEXTS Summary For the first time syntactical features of 14 Lithuanian dialects in Latvia are being discussed’ with addition of 28 texts. In the paper locative, illative, supine, constructions with prefixes afr, ažū, da, dėl, in, lig, nd, nud, paf, prié, etc., the contacts of the Lithuanian language with the Lettish and Slavonic languages are described. In 14 localities of Latvia (excepting Indrica and perhaps Ciskodas, Lettish Tiskadi) Lithuanian people lived from the 13th—15th cc. Great attention is paid to the dialect of Uodegénai (Lettish Vodigéni, Odigjani, Krislava District, 60 kilometres away from the main territory of the Lithuanian language- ). Other dialects described exist in localities, which in Lettish are called 4kniste, Garsene, Griva, Grendze, Kalkiine, Medumi, Nereta, Subate, Skirani, Vadakste.
