LITHUANIAN KALBOTYROS QUESTIONS, XXVIII (1989) LANGUAGES COMMUNICATIONS IR INTERACTIONS ALOYZAS AVERAGE IŠ OPERATIONAL SYSTEM CHOOSE SEMANTICS LITHUANIAN IR BELARUS PARIBIO SCHNEKTOS Language, as the main means of communication, forms the unity of content ir form. So the ir most easily noticeable element of speech — word in its form (expression or pointer) is inextricably linked to the value su (substantial or nominal). The lexical meaning of a word is iš indeed the basic unit of the lexical system of a language. Recently, semantics of language is considered one of the most iš relevant and ir promising fields of current linguistics. Be the study of semantic aspects of language is difficult to better understand the very nature of language, its functioning laws development, ir its relationship with human su thinking behavior ir (BacnnmsesB 1981, 3). Ne is less relevant to investigate these aspects in ir terms of language contact. In this article, the semantics of the verb collect and its change due to interference in the contacting Lithuanian-Belarusian border dialects, entering both the southeastern ir į Lietuvos TSR, both north-western į Belarus TSR districts. The names of iš places with more or less material are ar indicated with the same abbreviations as in the academic ir "Dictionary of the English Language". For the use of the verb collect most data are ir jų iš Zietelos ir This is the main reason why the article is based on the material of these talks. ir Iš the material available in other places is much more fragmented and does not reveal the whole ir system of use of the verb. Ji referred to for determining the prevalence of the most relevant values. Zietelos ir The Lazūnų schnecks į have entered the history of Lithuanian linguistics as the farthest į southeastern islands separated from the main Lithuanian language area. Iš truly so-called Zietelas ir The Lazūnai schnecks are only the remains of the former much larger Lithuanian patarmies. Lazūnai to The a. essence of iš the middle of the 19th century was still su directly related to the area of the main dialects of the Lithuanian language, whose southeastern edges had just begun to decay due to assimilation (Balinski, Lipinski 1846, 251: Tayuac, Bunyrapuoe 1983, 38). O The island of Zietela was also previously directly related to su other Lithuanian dialects. | Between each other differ ir significantly themselves Lazūnų ir - You're a snitch. Nemaža Lazūnų apylinkė forms the southernmost part of the eastern highlanders of Vilnius. (east Dzūkian) dialect corner. It is a natural extension of that proverb už within the borders of the republic. O The most important differences between the ir two are the vocalizations of the consonants. nearest southern highlands (western Dzūkijos) proverbs ir are more closely related to western Altaičiai, Kauniškiai. Only according to the / consonant ir hardening some morphological 39
ji characteristics approach the older designated middle highland dialect, especially the southern part (approx. Jiezna). Anyway. Lazūnų ir The morphology of the species is ką highly variable, with a wide variety of morphological features. ir Especially they are joined by many newer of various kinds (t. y. of different dialectal systems) commonalities, resulting from long ir close contacts su Slavs (Belarusian, Polish ir iš Russian) languages. The latter characteristics gradually decrease as we approach the main dialects of Lithuanian. : Many of the multilingual Lithuanian-- ir Belarusian border speakers speak one language with remarkable iš ease (language systems) to move į to the next. Some to linguists, although acknowledging iš the rapid assimilation of ir local Lithuanians, but purely synchronously examining the mechanism of contacts of the present Lithuanian Slavic languages, ir sometimes consider it appropriate to talk about "Union of ir Baltic Slavic Languages" (HesckKas, Cyjtauxr 1978, 286). Iš indeed due to long intensive ir contacts many Lithuanian Belarusian ir border speakers are characterized by a kind of specificity, which ir has all (especially Zietelos ir The use of the verb collect semantics. ir The verb rifikti, despite variations mainly of phonetic nature (plg. rifikti| roiiikt | rifikc’ | reiiikcie, refika| rafika et ir al.) iš In all dialects of the southeastern edge of Lithuania, it basically retains the same basic forms rifikti, refika, — rinko. Tik In Zietela's speech, for analogy, the root of present tense forms is sometimes the same as that of past tense forms, e.g., rinkū, rinki, ir rinkam(e), rinkat(e), rifika next to renkū, renki, refikam(e), reiikat(e), refika| raiika. In all dialects of Lithuanian, this verb is polymorphic, and in southeastern dialects it is often even extremely polymorphic. Polysemy, usually identified with semantic derivation (Drotvinas 1986, 83; 1987, 29), is an extremely important feature of language economy, helping to successfully overcome the fundamental contradiction between the infinite variety of reality and the relatively limited number of language elements. In practical dictionaries, the semantic volume of a multi-meaning word, more precisely the semantic structure of the word, which ti forms a kind of continuity, is usually divided into separate meanings – semantic variants (Vidugiris 1977, 111). The semantic ir variant, like the sememe, in turn consists of smaller particles of meaning, called semes, isolated by the method of component analysis. ir iš In this case, sems are used only to describe the individual semantic variants of a multi-meaning word. The semantic variant (semem) usually consists of a complex of sems, consisting of integral sems, which connect different meanings, are common to them, and differential iš sems, which distinguish closely related meanings (IT yxaBnuroc 1985, 19). t. y. Thus, each semantic variant of a polynomial, the general or integral semis, be always has more or less differential semis. The number of semantic variants depends largely on the allocation of differential sems and the number of their complexes. In general, according to the nature of the influence of language contacts, the semantic variants of the verb rifikti, or į meanings, can be divided into two groups. The first group would consist of semantic variants that are common with the corresponding semantic variants of the main Lithuanian dialects and common language. Often only their expressi40
on is different. Some of the semantic variants in the example of Slavic languages are usually described by prepositional or prepositional and adverbial verbs. At the same time, the most typical means of making expression forms are reviewed here. The second group would consist of semantic variants that arose from close contact with Slavic languages. Many of them are the product of clearly semantic interference—the so-called semantic lime. It is the most commonly spoken language in the southeastern part of Lithuania. The prepositional verbs, which are usually important not only for the correlation of meanings, but also for tracing the directions and trends of semantic interference, are presented next to each other. I. Pagal "Dictionary of Modern Lithuanian Language" (V., the verb 1972) to collect has seven semantic variants, or reSmes'. It is interesting to follow in sequence how they are expressed in Lithuanian and Belarusian border conversations, especially about Lazūnas and Zietelas. Of the traditional meanings, the first two semantic variants are the most widely used: 1. "to take and put in one place": Aimam m'&dz'an® viogu rinkc' Lz. "I'm not going to be the "G" in the "B" group". And then go refi.ka no"stal'- n'i"'k'ė*n (to the tablecloth) and sarižd'in'- ė'ja Zt. Uogas renika, an turgo" atv'ėždo" Pls. It is worth mentioning that the cases of the non-prepositional verb rinkti (especially in the talks of Zietela and Lazūnas) are less than those of prepositional derivatives of similar (prepositions modified accordingly) meaning, e.g.: pririnkti 1. „renkant prikrauti“: Nav'eimam s(u)odan, o:buol'it' prirenkam Mr. G'iro'j tools of the fire: (jagarų) ir atv eža Mr. Let's get ready. i: ir aimam home" Lz. Academic In the Lithuanian language dictionary, many of these meanings are broken down into smaller pieces, and together with the meanings of the word rinkti in various dialects, the number of semantic variants reaches 30 units. However, here the semantic structure of the word collecti is not revealed in one linguistic system, but a heterosystemic inventory of its meanings is presented. * A slightly simplified transcription is used. The length of ir accentuated long unaccented vowels, as well as those elongated by accentuation, is indicated by a point high from the right side of the letter (in fact, their length at the end of the word is not consistently retained here). The elongated i, « and the prefixes a, e are marked with a dot low from the right side of the letter and a s-like hyphen. The length of the diphthong mixed diphthongs is not indicated by a separate sign: the first diphthong of the strong beginners is elongated (from the semivowels to the long ones; only the i, u-++/, m, n, r of the Zietela schnekts are not elongated) and the second diphthong of the strong ends is elongated (usually to the semivowels). After ir hardened consonants ė, i, į are marked €£/3, x, expanded e— a, In the eastern highland dialects, ė, 0 — the 5. unstressed broadened e', the - softness of iš the prefix is indicated by an apostrophe on the right side. In simple brackets are explained rarer dialect words borrowed, in ir square brackets o explaining the text, but words not written by the voters. 41.

The non-prepositional form of the verb rinkti with the meaning "to elect by voting" is written only from Zietela, e.g. : Man'ė reiika iž brigad'iéri-(of course, if it is not a simple substitution of the verb ima). This semantic variant is now usually expressed in various prepositional and adverbial forms, e.g. : N'emd'ku n'é skaic'i'c', n'ė" raši'c', nori kard!l'um apriiikc'e Gry. The original non-prepositional verb to collect is not written with this meaning. And the last two more widely known semantic variants of the verb are basically also only prepositional or adverbial verbs, e.g.: 6. „take from the head and tie to the feet““: Iš po" p'jdutuvo* refikam [rugius] and v'&- Zam Pls. The examples show that the traditional expression of the meanings of the verb to collect has been preserved quite unevenly. Only the first two main semantic variants have preserved the best Lithuanian expression. They are expressed by both primary, non-prepositional verbs and prepositional (more often). The latter examples are perhaps more common because they specify, according to the appropriate prefix, the shades of action expressed by the word collect. In other words, there is no longer any evidence of the existence of the previously- -mentioned elements. It is replaced mainly by various prepositions, cf. the third semantic variant "to seek, to find suitable", expressed only by prepositional verbs. g The other remaining semantic variants are expressed by both prepositional derivatives and derivatives of the suffixes -(d)inėti, -dyti. It depends on where which method of production is more prevalent. For example, in Zietela’s speech, the adverbs -dinėti are very popular to emphasize the often repeated, frequent or long-lasting action (Vidugiris 1961, 219—231). Alongside the Lithuanian prepositional verbs, there are also limestones, which have emerged according to the Belarusian word formation model (see swibipdys | er16pays „1. 2. by voting to appoint“, nada6pdys „to elect a suitable person“, nabpdys „to take linen or hemp and tie it to the feet“, npwibipdys | npubpdys „to move (a table)“, etc.). For example, the people of Lazūnai, in addition to the Lithuanian form nu(si)rinkti (Mė's pa'ci's nusirinksim stalu), now more often use the functional forms pririūki or even priimti (Reika pririūke' | priim'c' nok stū'lo“ val'g'i'mūs). Thus, due to close and intensive contacts with Slavic languages, the development of the expression of the verb collect traditional meanings in the dialects of the southeastern edge of the Lithuanian language is characterized by two tendencies: with the disappearance of non-prepositional forms, prepositional derivatives (sometimes adverbial vedic) are increasingly prevailing and the functional (expressive) limescales are spreading strongly. II. 1998-1999 The intensive contact of speakers of the southeastern Lithuanian edge with Slavic languages also affects the semantic structure of the verb collect. The development of the meaning of “collect- ”, which is characteristic of Lithuanian language, was disrupted, i.e., thrown out of its traditional tracks. A huge wealth of meanings has emerged, having little in common with the traditional meanings of “collect- ”. The Lithuanian word rinkti began to take on the meanings of the corresponding Slavic word (see Belarusian 6pays "to take", Polish brac', Russian 6pams). The semantic structure of the word collect began to be invaded by foreign meanings, the so-called semantic lime. The liming in this case involves the so-called "internal form of the word" or content. By external form semantic lime “have no signs of foreign origin because they are native words” (Velakoski 1984, 221—222; Ojanen 1985, 143). A word of one's own, acquiring another or foreign meaning, immediately becomes another word or lexicon. This is one of the methods of nomination (ITasBejx 1983, 74, 83). From the point of view of content (taking into account that the verbs to collect and to take have common semis), the new meanings of the word to collect can be considered secondary semantic derivatives (t. y. derivatives). 44
Thus, in addition to the above-mentioned traditional meanings, the word collect has acquired many other meanings (semantic variants) in these dialects, which in turn can be divided again into two parts: various meanings of “take” (a) and “to prepare, to prepare” and other smaller meanings (b). Furthermore, the values are broken down and presented at their discretion, so their separation andarrangement due to diffusivity can be controversial. a. Here are given the semantic variants of the verb, which mainly not only mean, but also duplicate the semantic variants of the word imti. This is evident from the examples given next to the verb imti: 1.,Ciupti, imti ranka, arįrankiu“: Ga@l'iv'ienas v'iena" rifikt iž g'erkle's Zt. "I'm not going to be a rapper".
