Remarks
On additions to SEJL
The esteemed professor from Kraków, through his work, following K. Būga, E. Fraenkel, J. Kazlauskas, and V. Urbutis, has stirred up the study of the etymologies of our language’s lexicon, presenting everything with a thorough command of all the Baltic languages. He draws on our most important sources, the LKŽ and K. Sirvydas, and partly A. Juška, especially Z. Zinkevičius. We should therefore recognize the work’s exceptional character and importance for the study of our language, and express our respect for the scholar, since in this respect we are quite far behind.
The author seems to be brimming with scholarly work. Here we have in hand, and are carefully examining, several books from 2007, each nearly a thousand pages long, as well as a whole slew of corrections and additions in the language journal ALL. For many linguists, W. Smoczyński’s books are something of a breath of fresh air. Nevertheless, we have differing views on the etymologization of certain words presented in the Stownike (e.g., ačiū, aršūs, lęšis, etc.). There are also grounds for doubt regarding some matters of accentuation. These are not particularly consequential details, but they may mislead readers and followers of the Professor’s works.
It should be recalled that quite a few standard-language words do not have inherited stress or accent, but rather a changed form adopted by literate people from dialect speech: thus progą (4) ← prógą, reikšmę (4) ← reikšmę, veikslas ← veikslas, and so on. For example, audrà was adopted by poets and theater people for use in the standard language only from 1935, on the basis of the lake name Audrà, -õs (Aldrà, -õs), and has now become standard usage (even younger Samogitians adhere firmly to it). The same is done with the words lėkštė → lėkštė, óda → odà, kibìras → kìbiras, vérgas → vèrgas, pavėrgti → pavèrgti, vaĩstas → vaistàs, žãisti → žaĩsti, spėĩgas → spėgas, and so on.
W. Smoczyński writes all accentual variants on an equal footing with inherited forms. No, these are innovative accentual variants, not the result of word development. Thus audrà / audrà (not even included in LK޹ I, nor was kibìro / kìbiro¹). In the dialects, because of its recent appearance, ãikštę (4) was changed to aikštę through the teachers; the same happened to aistrà (2) in Samogitian, now standard-language aistrà (4).
1At the institute, we had to listen to B. Vosylutė and K. Ulvydas’s decision in 1956 after bringing in words recorded in the dialects: They say it is only Vilnius, Žaliakalnis, perhaps Panevėžys. This is newly learned and unnecessary for the LKŽ

Of course, language norms change; they cannot become fossilized. If they do not undermine the language system and are adopted by almost the entire educated community, we must accept them and begin using them synonymously. Of all the variants indicated by VPU students, the authors from both eastern Lithuania and Kaunas, in one scholar’s textbook “Lietuvių bendrinės kalbos kirčiavimas” (2007), are inclined to change a great deal and disregard the regularity of those who have learned it.
Let us say that stress also indicates antiquity. For example, in many Samogitian and northwestern Aukštaitian dialects there is advėrėje, which has not managed to adapt to the long stressed ē; this datum has not been published. Likewise, ābrė in Skn, Žg, Grz and ābrī in Krš are, without question, loans from Latvian; no extensive discussion is even needed, since an old dialect word would be ābrė (in the dialects that lengthen short stressed vowels, they are lengthened anyway; in 1985, I happened to hear this in Pp, in Šemetačiai village: á. brė ~ ābrė.).
The form pálksninė is a regular development from paalksninės (p. 11)—a regular contraction of vowels. álksnuotos pievos (p. 11) is seldom heard. In Samogitian, formations with the prefix ant- have only ánt- (even ámburgos, with t elided and n occurring before b and pronounced m). The word ánkiaušis ‘duck’s egg’ is colloquial in style, a pronunciation dialectism. Only Aukštaitian has añštolis (p. 18). Apsidžiaugti should be corrected to apsidžiaugti (p. 19). What does the author think of Samogitian apẽi, aplẽi, āple, and why is it ei, e here instead of ie? The word atañčių (gen. pl.) has retracted stress (p. 28). The dialect expression is only áudras kėlti ‘to romp’ (p. 31). Samogitian has avėčia. The adverb beveik (p. 58) is not inherited; the accentual contour has changed in the towns. Surely duburkālis ‘small hollow’ (p. 69) and kurpālis are not formations with the same suffix? Throughout the Samogitian area, only bruotėrė.lis occurs, not broterėlis (p. 75). čigonėna = čigonėnai (1). The word giesmė (3) is not only religious but also solemn, for example, a hymn (p. 91). Is daugėlis not daūgelis ‘a large crowd’? The form drėžū (drežėti ‘to be stingy’ (p. 124)) is a misunderstanding = drėžū. Samogitian drįsti is found on the present-day edge of the area preserving an, en, in, un. In the present tense, 1st person is drēnčo / drēn.ču ~ draṣū, whereas I have simply never heard or recorded the forms dresū (p. 125); alongside drū.kc ‘stout’, drū·gdgalis is pronounced in many places, including Krš and Pvn. Is the acc. sg. dūobę = duobę (p. 133) not a typographical error? The word eikštė is the result of some kind of transposition (J), vowel reduction (p. 143). The words aldija and eldija are connected only by a-/e- transposition—probably they are a single word (p. 146). The data gāila (p. 151), after gāisą (from Latvian?—p. 151), are doubtful. In the dialects, the word urkštynė is only urkštynė, while urkštynė is prescribed for the standard language on the basis of other words with this suffix. Juška’s bāgalis comes from dialects in which na-, ba-, ta- was replaced by the vowel e through e-fronting in western dialects (Klaipėda and Kretinga dialects)—p. 165; gegužė there is probably a typographical error (ibid.). From the spelling of Low German, jēlas = gēlas arose (p. 166; see also the footnote there). The etymology of the word Gelžis is unconvincing because gelž- occurs over a wider area of the Baltic languages, whereas gelež- (gelaž- only because of le > la) is confined to Aukštaitian dialects. The verbs gimdžia, kludžia (p. 175) are present-tense stems of the i- and o-conjugations.

Pastabos
1. is replaced by the present-tense stems ia. glėmža = glėmža (p. 188; gliuosis (from Jž) is probably a typographical error—it was checked, and people do not know the word (p. 191); glūdinas = gluodinas (p. 191) is from southern Samogitian (the dūnininkai dialect); atėjo = atėjo (p. 214). In Aukštaitian dialects and the standard language, j is always added before ie-: i = j: jekà = jekà, jėšmas = iešmas, ievà = ievà, Jiešmuo = Iešmuo (pp. 216–217). ilgainiui = ilgainiui (a change in the stress position and accentual contour of a newly recalled word—p. 218; nuõdai = nuodaĩ (stress pattern 4)—p. 221; įsnauja ir yšnauja differ only in spelling; pronounced with i (p. 225); lėlė = lėlė (4)—p. 227; jeknos ir jāk nos ‘liver’ differ only in spelling, with identical pronunciation; the first form—p. 233. The same phenomenon occurs in júo = juõ, júoba = juõba—p. 238; giāure—the g arose from German Samogitian spelling; Prussian Lithuanians pronounced it j (p. 235); jūsasis = jūšasis Samogitian—p. 240; kainà 4—this is a case of a word not adopted from the dialects, but of stress and accentual contour being shifted around 1910 in accordance with K. Būga’s prescriptions (p. 242). karčemà—a less common stress pattern of the word = karčėma (p. 255). The so-called rotininkai form kevárza ‘keverza’ (p. 280) = kevérza is irregular even when transposed. The word kivirčias is used by careless athletes and journalists; it is entirely new, unlike = kivirčas (2)—p. 293. klānas (water) 4—klānai is a loanword for economic matters, whereas klanai ‘puddles’—p. 293. The same passage gives klonė, klonis; the more frequent dialect forms are klonė, klonis—Dr. S. Ambrazas seeks to establish the circumflex accent. The words klėvas ir kliūvai (p. 297) are merely a matter of spelling. The stress pattern kõneveikti, -veikiù, -veikiaũ is impossible, cobbled together from several dialects: kõneveikti, -ių, -iau is used in the standard language and by western Aukštaitians, while koneveikti, -veikiù, -iaũ is used by southern Aukštaitians (Drsk, Rtn, Maceliai, Vrn)—p. 305. kópa ‘Baltic coastal dune’ is a recent shift in stress position and accentual contour among urban intellectuals (ibid.). From košėti we say kósėju, whereas kosėju is scarcely heard (p. 306). The change from the form krātis to kreĩčiu is *ri > rei (p. 307). Even krāšės becomes krēšė even in Samogitian (ibid.)—see the book Lietuvių kalbos tarmių morfoneminiai reiškiniai (pp. 155–158). The same happens with the words krātilas ir krētilas, krašėti ir krešėti ir kt. (ibid.), kráuti ir kriáuti, kraulioti ir kriaulioti and many others—p. 309. Well, that kriau akis is just kreivākis (ei > e., transposed in the first element of the diphthong, as it was written; and kraivas is the result of hardening the consonant r, apparently beginning in K. Sirvydas’s time (p. 311). The word krāušė is especially characteristic of Samogitians in Sg, Kin, Šv, Grdm, Pj, and elsewhere (p. 313). The author has already written that krumsnóti is the untransposed form kramsnoti (p. 315). Prussian cugis is clearly spelled on the model of Low German (p. 321). Kūlis / kūlys ‘stone’ must not be confused with words having the root kul- (ibid.), especially Kulių with Kūliais. laisvanõris was coined during the Soviet occupation so it would not coincide with the Lithuanian freedom fighters, the savanoriais (p. 394). The Kaunas dialect form laĩškas reflects a recent shift in the accentual contour of the word, following the abandonment of the loanword grõmata from 1920 onward—p. 335. Taurālaūkis is a new name, since the old Klaipėda residents (and according to Fenzlaw) used tāurlā.ūkis. The verb lailėti, lailà, -ėjo is an untransposed eastern Lithuanian form (p. 342), an old form of ours

The clearly defined area of the dialects does not allow this to be considered an older feature, and it also varies. I wonder whether there is anything unusual here, or any ántų, ą̃šų, andenių, etc. The noun veisėlė (p. 728) is dialectal; the generally used form is veislė (2), while veislė is used in cities through misunderstanding. Vėltana is the regular e > a in the so-called dadininkas dialects (p. 733). Farmers pronounce it šienveržė, not šienveržė (p. 742). The form vėdo should be changed to vėso (p. 743). sėjėjas = sėjėjas (ibid.). The pronunciation of the singular locative among all Lithuanians is vidui, viršui, kraujui; only textbooks teach vidui, viršui, which is merely a spelling habit (p. 747); even VPU lecturers stress viduj, viršuj (!) and so on. Unexpectedly stressed viengungis (p. 748) = viengungis (2). Pono being replaced by viešių (p. 750) has become a little joke. The verb viežtis is unexplained; in Samogitian it is pronounced viež̌:s, neūšioviežu, which sounds like some of the Slavicisms miėstas, svietas, etc. The name of the lake is Vāšuoka, from dialectal vā.so.kas / vā.šakas, due to the pronunciation of unstressed uo in the dialects (p. 744). The form nakvašà has the syllable -va- from the dadininkas dialects (p. 744). Another word—pavėnia—is, in general, difficult to explain in terms of stress (p. 744). Viengungis, -ė (p. 748) = viengungis, -ė (2). The participle apvilktas (p. 753) is from the Švenčionys and Utena region; most Lithuanians use only apvilktas (p. 753). Bevyrė, didvyrė are pronounced with metatony: bevyrė, didvyrė (p. 757). Paviržis should be changed to the form pavìržis (p. 761). žāisti is inherited (in the Suwałki region people scold children: vė̃ pražā.i-dei pirštinītės; I will not even mention Lz, Zt (p. 771). The form žìpsnis is more likely to have arisen from žìpsnis, -ỹs through ú > i (p. 775). The literary-standardized Samogitian words žemynrašui, žemynvārpiui keep cropping up throughout the text: there is only the ending ‘-u / ’ou / o‘ (p. 778). From German Samogitian orthography came žlėga (p. 789), which came to be pronounced by Germanized western Aukštaitians from Tilžė and Pagėgiai.
Professor W. Smoczyński put in a great deal of work and presented the world with a major creative work. He brought fame to our language and teaches us all to study, with dedication and self-sacrifice, both the dialects of our own language and the most diverse scholarly sources. Is it because we lack confidence in our abilities, because we do not think we will be better prepared, or because we want to take it easy for a while?
