Two cases a e highligh ed, he gypsy mo h, which was e ised o sponge mo h ( Lyman ia dispa ), and Asian ca p, which was e ised o in asi e ca p. I is a gued ha “linguis ic wokeism” is e ec i ely p opaga ed and es ablished when neolibe al ideologies a e aligned among academia, socio-poli ical ac ion g oups, and neolibe al media, including social media. Finally, in he cu en ongoing Russo-Uk ainian wa , ea ly bans on he le e s “V” and “Z” in some coun ies, as a linguis ic o m o Russophobia, sugges s he possibili y ha geo- poli ical animosi ies may also be linguis ically exp essed in neolibe al ways, wi h a ongue-in-cheek isk being sugges ed o he Russian salad. Using he wo ds o Cowen, wokeism may ep esen a s a e o being “highly awa e o acism and social injus ice, and is gal anized owa d aising awa eness” o membe s he ex eme a -le , bu o membe s he ex eme a - igh , i could ep esen “p eachy, aliena ing, o e ly conce ned wi h symbols and sel - igh eous” 1 . An online dic iona y de ines “woke” h ough a le -leaning p ism, as “awa e o and ac i ely a en i e o impo an ac s and issues (especially issues o acial and social jus ice)” 2 . The neolibe al academic mo emen has induced challenges o issues ela ed o cul u al ideologies, he economy, socie y, and “emo ional in eg i y” (Gai e al. 2021). One angible ou come o he ise in wokeism as a mains eam socio-cul u al phenomenon, and as a buzzwo d in social media, is ha social ac i ism is being ans o med in o a b anding ool o companies, and hus he issue o au hen ici y o he message may become de ac ed om i s o iginal social in en ions (Mi zaei e al. 2022). In hei desi e o c ea e a new and e o med social ab ic, “neolibe al academics emb ace a new se o assump ions and no ms ha s and in sha p elie o many o he alues ha we e p e iously espoused” (Mac a lane 2021). In hese cases, a se o social ci cums ances a e used o ampli y a social con lic whe e one does no exis , inducing an ac ual s a e o con lic , one in which such wo ds o e ms – ha had p e iously had an innocuous meaning bu we e pu pose ully manipula ed o gi e hem a nega i e conno a ion – may be subjec o censo ship and adicalized sc eening. IS THE GYPSY MOTH NOW THE SPONGY MOTH, AND IS THE ASIAN CARP NOW THE INVASIVE CARP? Indi iduals may be de ined by hei cul u al g oups, and ha iden i y can some imes be challenged and associa ed wi h nega i e pe cep ions o , o p ejudices abou , a pa icula g oup o popula ion by o he g oups o cul u es. In some cases, alse pe cep ions may be c ea ed in o de o pu pose ully induce a s a e o social con lic . Such p ejudices may become en enched and nega i e s igma iza ion may become ampli ied i he g oup is classi ied as an e hnic mino i y, such as he Roma o “Gypsy” (Mo ei a e al. 2022). In he ligh o his neolibe al e hnic sensi i i y, e isionis linguis ic policies ha e now associa ed he e m “gypsy” wi h a o m o p ejudice o acism. Consequen ly, e ms ha migh employ he wo d “gypsy” may be sociologically and linguis ically challenged o e o m by neolibe al academics o mo emen s. As one angible example, en omologis s a ound he wo ld ha e known Lyman ia dispa as he gypsy mo h, as i s common English name. Despi e his, he En omological Socie y o Ame ica (ESA) ook i upon hemsel es – imposingly o e looking o no 4 conside ing he opinions o en omological socie ies a ound he wo ld – o e ise he common name o “spongy mo h” in he Common Names o Insec s and Rela ed O ganisms Lis , and sough o implemen his change globally by 2023 (ESA 2022). Tha campaign was aided, among o he s, by le -leaning neolibe al US media ou le s such as CNN and, as e ealed a /by CNN, a US-based socio-poli ical p o-Roma ac ion g oup was linked wi h his decision 3 . Why should en omologis s a ound he wo ld – especially hose ha may w i e o English academic jou nals – abide by he decision and a ionale o he ESA, and is his a new o m o neo- colonial esea ch ha has become disguised as a o m o “ esea ch excellence” (Neylon 2020), in which he alue sys ems o a de eloped na ion (o an o ganiza ion wi hin i ) impose hei alue sys em on o he less powe ul and in luen ial de eloping na ions? A simila cul u ally o e -sensi i e ca ego iza ion o an in asi e ish in he US, he Asian ca p, coupled wi h poli iciza ion – o pe haps acializa ion – o he issue, led lawmake s in Minneso a 4 o in oduce a bill ha he Asian ca p should be known as in asi e ca p, wi h le -leaning news media ou le s like CNN 5 p omo ing his social e o m p og am wi h well- es ablished neolibe al “ acis ” a gumen s. In his case, he poo ish was in some way made esponsible o humans’ con lic ing pe cep ions. IS THE RUSSIAN SALAD DOOMED? In he con ex o he ongoing Russo-Uk ainian wa , in pa icula by “Wes e n” na ions ha ha e been p o iding mili a y and o he suppo o Uk aine, coupled wi h economic sanc ions agains Russia, a nega i e associa ion became es ablished no only wi h he coun y, bu also wi h he wo d “Russia”. Will neolibe al academics, in his clima e, seek o e ise e ms ha include “Russia”? As one example, will neolibe al socio-poli ical e isionis s seek o call he Russian salad some hing else ha excludes he e m “Russian”? Howe e , wha happened wi h he gypsy mo h and Asian ca p migh se e as indica o s o wha migh be all e ms like “Russian salad”, e en i he e m desc ibes an innocuous ood i em. One ac ic o educe Russia’s s a u e is by delibe a ely beli ling i by e e ing o i as “ ussia” 6 , i.e., emo ing he capi aliza ion o he i s le e ha ypi ies p ope nouns, as in coun y names. Ano he is by banning he le e s o he alphabe “V” and “Z”, which ha e been used symbolically by Russia du ing his wa wi h Uk aine, while also applying ines and c iminal p osecu ion 7 . Wha would happen i all 26 le e s o he English alphabe we e o be co-op ed in o mili a y campaigns, how hen should he English language and i s alphabe be in e p e ed? Would language and ee communica ion be banned? E en i some o hese linguis ic aspec s appea i ial, hey collec i ely become o ms o Russophobia (Diesen, 2022), wi h geo-poli ical ami ica ions, including a emp s o “decolonize” Russia 14 . Those in ehemen disag eemen wi h his p oposal should e lec on how hey migh eel i hei own na ion was e e ed o, in an ac o pu pose ul linguis ic denig a ion, as “uk aine”, “usa”, “uk”, “japan”, o “ge many” o eplace and beli le Uk aine, USA, UK, Japan, o Ge many, espec i ely. In he la e case, libe al media, as well as social media (including X hash ags) can se e as messaging pla o ms o ampli y he message. Thus, “linguis ic wokeism”, as a neolibe al phenomenon o he weaponiza ion o language, equi es g ea e a en ion, sc u iny, and deba e. Many academics migh no pay close a en ion o his opic, o hey migh conside i o be un ela ed o hei wo k, o i ele an . They may e en ind i o be oo poli ically cha ged and hus oo isky o deba e, o ea o pee e alia ion. Howe e , hey should ake no ice now be o e i is oo la e, i.e., be o e legal bills and laws a e enac ed, because he e a e e y p ac ical implica ions i adical neolibe al policies a e no ca e ully e ed and s opped. Fo example, i neolibe al policies become excessi e, o i hey a e de e mined by a mino i y o he majo i y, such as ESA’s gypsy mo h policy implemen ed o global en omologis s, wi hou any democ a ic p ocess o choice by he academics o en omological specialis s o o he na ions, hen i becomes an ex ended mo al issue associa ed wi h au ho s’ igh s, o mo e accu a ely, a iola ion o hei igh s o choice (Al-Kha ib, Teixei a da Sil a, 2017). In his case, an a i icially c ea ed alue sys em is o ce ully imposed on en omologis s’ igh s o name a Gypsy mo h as such, including in an academic pape . I he use o such “undesi able” e ms becomes ou lawed in academia, his will be equa ed wi h an e hical issue, and he au ho s o academic pape s migh ind hemsel es ha ing o o ce ully co ec hei pape s, o i hey a e esis an o such edi o ial policies, e ac hem. Such cases, which may seemingly be innocuous socio-poli ical ideologies, migh become ans o med in o e y powe ul pseudo-e hical policies pu in o p ac ice by jou nals o publishe s wi h a e o ma i e socio-poli ical ideology. I so, his would ul ima ely empowe some academics, bu delegi imize he igh s o o he s. In essence, adical neolibe al policies a e playing Russian oule e wi h alue sys ems in academic publishing, a emp ing o con ound socially sensi i e issues wi h e hics and igh s. This opic is a ely, i e e , deba ed in academic jou nals. NEOLIBERAL REVISIONIST POLICIES IN PRACTICE: IS CORRECTION OF THE ACADEMIC LITERATURE WARRANTED? As one example, and o a gumen ’s sake, as was no ed abo e, he ESA unila e ally implemen ed a name change o he gypsy mo h. Howe e , he e a e housands o pape s ha ha e, o da e, employed he e m gypsy mo h o desc ibe L. dispa , as e idenced in some majo da abases o sea ch engines like he Web o Science, Scopus, PubMed, o Google Schola . Fo now, acco ding o hei websi e’s s a emen s, he ESA has a emp ed o ansi ion global en omologis s o – using e y empha ic language and p omo ion ia mass media – 7 adop sponge mo h o eplace gypsy mo h, which could be conside ed as he “indoc ina ion” s age. In his s age, including h ough he use o libe al and/o social media, socie y and en omologis s a ound he wo ld a e being “condi ioned” o accep his neolibe al change as he new accep ed “no mal”. Thus, by associa ion, hey a e also – pe haps inad e en ly – also accep ing i s socio-poli ical message, i.e., ha he e m “gypsy” is p ejudicial, and by associa ion, so is he innocen mo h. Howe e , his seemingly innocuous s age could be ollowed by a mo e imposi ional (o agg essi e) phase o policy c ea ion and implemen a ion. In ha case, he in eg a ion o a neolibe al policy becomes mo e o ce ul, such as manda ing academics who wish o con inue e e ing o L. dispa as he gypsy mo h o make hem adop , by “ o ce”, he e m “sponge mo h”, o he Asian ca p as in asi e ca p. How hen can en o cemen ake place? One way would be o in oduce “e hical” policies in o en omological jou nals ha would s a e ha academics mus con o m o his e m, i.e., a manda o y clause migh be inse ed in o a jou nal’s e hical policies o ins uc ions o au ho s. As was alluded o abo e, he condi ioning s age can also be simul aneously accompanied by a p ocess o social shaming, e e ing o hose who do no adop newly imposed and supposedly “neu al” e ms as acis , in ole an , o une hical, he eby a emp ing o cancel hem – as well as hei opinions and choices – in his p ocess. In ex eme cases, should, in he u u e, he ESA manda e he use o “sponge mo h” as a jou nal’s e hical equi emen , he e may be mo e se ious implica ions. As one example, ESA (o i s p oponen s) may eques au ho s o pape s o e oac i ely “co ec ” pape s ha used he e m “gypsy mo h” o desc ibe L. dispa . A ha ime, i such policies we e o be implemen ed, a leas hypo he ically, hen cu en co ec i e measu es o he academic li e a u e (Teixei a da Sil a, 2022) may become “weaponized”, and used as socio-poli ical ools o neolibe al e o m, h ough language.
