124 1 REPRESENTACIÓN GRÁFICA, PRESENTACIÓN Y VISUALIZACIÓN DEL PAISAJE LINEAL. ESTUDIO EVOLUTIVO DE LA RELACIÓN AUTOR/PRESENTADOR/OBSERVADOR GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION, PRESENTATION AND VIEWING OF THE LINEAR LANDSCAPE. AN EVOLUTIONARY STUDY OF THE AUTHOR-PRESENTER-OBSERVER RELATIONSHIP María Senderos Laka, Iñigo Leon Cascante, José Javier Pérez Martínez doi: 10.4995/ega.2022.15533
The graphic representation of a linear landscape brings together the objectivity and rigour associated to geographical depiction of a territory as well as the personal interpretation of the landscape and its cultural meanings (chías, 2018, pp. 109110). In the rendering of a linear landscape associated to the course of a river or the route of a path, the interpretive subjectivity is largely constrained to the directional scope of that structure. The difficulty of the respective representation derives from the complexity of a reality which requires personal interpretation beforehand; it also depends on the choice of a suitable representation technique to ensure proper presentation, visualisation and comprehension. This article classifies various ways to represent and present such spaces, taking into account their spatial dimension and setting aside any temporal or thematic aspect. PALABRAS CLAVE: PAISAJE LINEAL, REPRESENTACIÓN GRÁFICA, PRESENTACIÓN ESTÁTICA, PRESENTACIÓN DINÁMICA, VISUALIZACIÓN The linear landscape has historically been rendered in pictures that show a continuous river, a road or train tracks, or by elevations and views depicting a developed space. The problem of presenting such extensive spaces has generated multiple forms of visualisation which comprise a heterogeneous whole. In this article, different modes of presenting the linear landscape are classified according to viewing dynamics and the role of the observer. Changes affecting the roles played by the author, presenter and observer in the various processes described are also examined. The ability to view these spaces through new 3D representation and viewing techniques is addressed, along with the purpose of the author’s interpretation in these procedures. The role of the observer is also defined and classified as either internal or external, depending on the assigned role in reading the space. Finally, different ways to represent and present these large-format linear spaces are considered, taking into account the availability of new techniques and their respective purposes. Static presentation. The external observer In 1503 hostilities between the cities of Florence and Pisa led Machiavelli to develop a plan to divert the Arno River with the aim of weakening Pisa’s strategic position. Leonardo da Vinci’s small-format drawings for the Arno River diversion project offer a perfect example of static presentation with external observer. Although the role of Leonardo in Machiavelli’s plan is not clear (barsanti, 2015; Ferreti, 2019), records indicate that at that time Leonardo was working on a project to build a navigable canal between Florence and the sea. Also, preserved among his documents are several drawings that analyse various alternatives for the project in question. Those drawings highlight the diverse modes of representation, which run from descriptive rigour accentuated by meticulous detail to subjective interpretation expressed in a more abstract manner. The descriptive drawing of the geography of western Tuscany (Fig. 1) expresses a homogeneous and objective representative criterion. The depiction extends beyond the Arno watershed and the path of the channel does not even occupy the central area of the drawing; a certain amount of detail is rendered by the inclusion of topographic relief, towns and bridges over the river. Conversely, the map showing the course of the Arno River (Fig. 2) and the plan for its diversion (Fig. 3) are much more schematic, focusing almost exclusively on accurate depiction of the river’s course and local topographical relief, two of the most decisive factors in that water project. These analysis and concept drawings are representative of Leonardo’s work, in which the “‘graphic objective’ is in the transmission of thought, as priority conveyance of knowledge” (uría, 2017, p.53). Army Geographical Centre. https://www.defensa.gob.es/ portaldecultura/cultural/ representation of a large expanse of territory from a distant viewpoint, in small-page format with a certain degree of detail and rigour, aspects which underscore the external and static role of the observer. The new Camino Real de Coches road construction project was conceived by Francisco de Ibero in 1765 (Astiazarain, 2007). It planned a new route between Vitoria and the Behobia border crossing as it passed through Guipúzcoa, using similar graphic resources which run from objective rigour in rendering the territory to subjective interpretation of the landscape associated to the road’s route (Fig. 4). The coastline and river channels in the territorial geography are accurately shown, as well as the position of built-up areas and the crossroads and fords along the way. But the schematic approach dispenses with all elements that do not directly concern the road, with interpretative depiction of the urban layout of the towns making up this linear landscape. At the same time, the size of the format (1,450 x 660 mm) allows a double reading: on the one hand, a general perspective of the structural arrangement of the proposal and, on the other hand, a detailed tour of the route, enabled by interpretation of the landscape through the depiction of population centres, universities, parish churches or farmsteads (Fig. 5). In the first case, observers adopt a distant and static position; but in the second, the schematic depiction of population centres generates a singular process whereby observers can 5 4 detalle, y la interpretación subjetiva expresada mediante un mayor grado de abstracción.

Source: own production, 2020 follow the route on a closer scale, shifting their view along the static plane. Static presentation. Internal observer The static presentation of a linear space, in this case a road, can be seen from the inside, by means of elevations and sections that enhance the extent of the observer’s immersion. Here the purpose of the drawing is to show the evolution of this industrial landscape along the road, its linearity. The elevations show a side view of the road (Fig. 6) in a rather unrealistic manner, though thanks to a learnt mental process they do abstractly prompt perception of the place. The observer enters the space through the building elevations around it. According to the studies of Kevin Lynch: “Movement perception along a road is within a structural order of constant elements – road, sky, lamppost spacing and yellow stripes” (Venturi, Scott Brown, Izenour, 1972). However, the observer almost does not perceive what goes by laterally. It is therefore obvious that a driver on a highway would never be able to appreciate a building elevation in the landscape on the side. The same phenomenon occurs in the graphic survey of the Cordoba Mosque done by Antonio Almagro (Fig. 7). Although concerning a building and not a landscape, it clearly reflects the visualisation phenomenon that occurs in a linear space.

The complete and static view of the Mosque by means of an elevation is a rendering that does not correspond to the perception of someone walking down the street, who takes in partial perspectives of the long building (Fig. 8). These flat renderings in which a space is observed from the inside require considerable detail and consequently a wider rectangular format. Presentation can be problematic and in many cases requires a fragmented view. D’Arcangelo introduces the observer in this emphatic image of a road, whose narrative potential derives from the respective abstraction (Fig. 9). Superfluous information has been eliminated, since “... the painter reduces perception of the landscape to elemental forms and a few highly contrasting colours, to the data registered by the motorist´s eye.” (Honnef, 2008). When a large linear landscape is drawn on 1972).

Source: Escher, M.C., Prints and Drawings, Taschen, p.11 a plane, abstraction becomes absolutely necessary. According to Vitruvius, the essence and effectiveness of a drawing lie in its reductive nature, i.e. in the inevitable transformation of forms (Uría, 2007, p.52). In this regard, the viewer is drawn toward relevant information through an interpretation of the space. Dynamic presentation of the linear landscape. External observer dynamic presentation of a linear landscape with external observer can be produced by viewing the space in a video (Fig. 10). This is an appropriate strategy when the longitudinal format becomes too unwieldy. The drawing is adjusted vertically to fit the screen, so it can then be shifted horizontally. A largerscale view is thus achieved by dynamically presenting the plan in a continuous partial reading. In this case, the presentation is dynamic and the observer static. The latter’s role in the process is solely that of an information receiver. A masterful example of dynamic linear landscape presentation is the panoramic roll painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival (Fig. 11). This picture describes the lifestyle of people in both city and countryside along the course of a river, which stands out in the process. The format used “allows a representation analogous to the narration or the trip” (Zhang, 2019). In this case the dynamism results from the way the landscape is presented, a ritual that starts with the chosen format, a roll more than five metres long whose sections are viewed during a continuous sequence of unrolling and rolling up. The roll format means the drawing can be read in an approachable scale and therefore in great detail. In this case there is no abstraction or simplification. The observer is overwhelmed by an abundance of information which can be internalised thanks to the continuous partial reading. In addition to the dynamism in the presentation, the painter includes the temporal factor in the representation by developing a story that shifts over time. In other words, along with the drawing’s movement in space, the picture introduces Cuando un paisaje lineal de gran extensión se dibuja en un plano, la abstracción resulta absolutamente necesaria. (Honnef, 2004). 10 11
a progression in the space-time narrative contained in the landscape (Delbanco, 2000). Likewise, in the work Day and Night (Fig. 12) a city is also depicted next to a river. In this case the temporal factor, the transformation between day and night, acquires greater relevance. The focus is more on the temporal transition than on linear space, which is now secondary. Although the presentation is static, it forces the observer to be visually dynamic. The drawing is rich in detail and it is the viewer’s gaze which travels from left to right and vice versa, from day to night, from light to darkness. Dynamic presentation of the linear landscape. Internal observer Nor do we have good graphic tools to describe the Strip as a conveyer of messages. How can the visual importance of the Stardust be captured in a picture in which thirty metres are depicted in just three centimetres? (Venturi, Scott, Izenour, 1972) This difficulty of graphic representation could nowadays be resolved with the new forms of representation and presentation, through a dynamic journey. The most obvious dynamic presentation is the one developed through video, since it is totally directed by the author who interprets the space for the reader. It may be developed protagonista del proceso.
132 on any screen or, in a more immersive manner, in 3D or 4D cinemas where the user is taken along a linear path such as a train track or road (Fig. 13). That experience could be described as “a sequence unfolded before the eyes of a captive spectator (...) whose vision is filtered and directed forward” (Appleyard, Lynch, Myer, 1964). The simplification of information will depend on the author and the degree of detail or realism meant to be shown. The reader will progress in linear space, limited by the author’s intent, which prevents any interaction with the scenario presented. The observer’s role is relegated to that of a passive actor in the process. Route 66 can currently be viewed using Google Maps. In this image captured at the beginning of the route in Chicago (Fig. 14), the user is placed in the role of a driver observing the surroundings, though without any ability to measure those spaces and always within a photographic environment. As in Chinese scroll paintings, realism and profusion of detail are accompanied by a progression through space in which it is the user who decides the route to be taken. In this scenario readers direct their interest in a personal manner; there is no interpretation of the space for them, since we are not confronted with a drawing but rather a scenario created from a massive capture of 360° images. Hence, there is no simplification of information and the observer’s role becomes dynamic, making decisions regarding on-screen movement. The space is not viewed as a whole but along a route which enables more approach to the object, at close-up scale. The dynamic tour progresses in fits and starts; the user advances, stops, turns, limited by the positions provided in the Google Street View presentation. In the example of a stream located at the Salinas de Añana, the linear element is bordered by wooden structures that form the salt-pond space (Fig. 15). A massive data capture was done using automatic drone-assisted photogrammetry and a 3D laser scanner. The scanner used, a Leica BLK2GO, includes SLAM technology, whereby even data collection takes place dynamically (Fig. 16). Based on the scan, a metric-quality point cloud (Fig. 17) is obtained along with a 360° image that can subsequently be sectorised Presentación dinámica del paisaje lineal. 13 14
