Digital Commerce Under Threat: The Influence of Social Media on Counterfeit Goods and Fake Reviews

Abstract

Abstract: - Digital commerce has become an important part of today’s global economy, offering convenience and wider choices to consumers. However, it is increasingly threatened by counterfeit products and fake reviews, many of which are promoted and amplified through social media platforms. Counterfeit goods not only damage the reputation of genuine brands but also cause huge financial losses to businesses, discourage innovation, and put consumers at risk of receiving unsafe or poor-quality products. Fake reviews, on the other hand, manipulate customer opinions, misguide purchasing decisions, and reduce overall trust in e-commerce platforms. The role of social media is critical in this problem, as it provides both opportunities for businesses to connect with customers and a space for unethical sellers to exploit users with misleading promotions. This research paper explores how social media accelerates the spread of counterfeit goods and fake reviews, the challenges it creates for businesses, platforms, and consumers, and its long-term impact on the growth of digital commerce. It also highlights possible solutions such as stricter digital policies, advanced detection technologies, consumer awareness, and platform accountability to reduce these threats and build a more secure and trustworthy online marketplace
