ines (see Wi ness Sp ing 1996, Sp ing
1998, Sp ing/Au umn 1999). Du ing he
inal wo deploymen s o SCICEX in 1998
and 1999, Sea loo Cha ac e iza ion and
Mapping Pods (SCAMP) we e moun ed
on he hull o he USS Hawkbill o collec
da a necessa y o p oducing he i s com-
p ehensi e high- esolu ion maps o he
su ace and shallow subsu ace o he a c ic
sea loo . The SCAMP sys em inco po a ed
a 12 kHz sidescan ba hyme ic sona o
imaging and measu ing sea loo dep hs
o e a swa h o up o 10 km, and a chi p
subbo om p o ile o s udying he sub-
su ace.
SCAMP succeeded ema kably, acqui -
ing mo e han 40 million dep h sound-
ings; he olume o ex u al and
subbo om da a collec ed exceeds he
numbe o dep h soundings by 2–3 o de s
o magni ude. In combina ion wi h he
su ace ex u e (sidescan) and subbo om
da a, SCAMP ba hyme y da a a e p o id-
ing a new h ee-dimensional pe spec i e o
he A c ic Basin sea loo ha is enabling
geologis s o challenge widely held heo ies

ice ages ( om 1.6 million o 10,000 yea s

eaus. The USS Hawkbill and SCAMP
mapped linea ions and idges ha appea

Bo de land, Alaska Ma gin, Lomonoso
Ridge, and Ye mak Pla eau. A shallowe

Bogi Hansen, an oceanog aphe a he
