con en in he i s -yea ice. These sedi-
men s can accele a e mel ing o sea ice and
impac ligh le els and nu ien con en
ha in luence algal p ima y p oduc ion in
he ice laye s and unde lying wa e .
Du ing he sp ing c uise, he su ace
wa e s o e he shel nea Be ing S ai had
high concen a ions o nu ien s, indica ing
ha he main phy oplank on bloom had
no ye begun. Al hough he e was some
a iabili y, ni a e was ela i ely abundan
o e he shel , wi h a declining g adien as
he Healy mo ed o e he slope o he A c-
ic Basin. This lack o ni a e in o sho e
wa e s was somewha su p ising and may
indica e an unusually ea ly bloom in his
egion. Because obse a ions on p oduc i -
i y in his egion a e sca ce, i is di icul
o know i his ea ly bloom is “no mal” o
ela ed o he ecen wa ming o he A c ic.
By compa ison, su ace nu ien
concen a ions we e low h oughou he
summe c uise, coinciden wi h he high-
es wa e column chlo ophyll le el (an
indica o o plan g ow h) nea he bo om,
sugges ing pos -bloom condi ions. Mic o-
scopic analyses o plank on also indica ed
pos -bloom condi ions. Highe le els o
bac e ia and bac e ia-consuming lagella es
occu ed in he uppe wa e column in he
