disease was endemic in he Alaska Na i e
popula ion du ing he 19 h cen u y. Due
o inc easingly sus ained con ac wi h
ou side s, by he mid 20 h cen u y i had
eached epidemic p opo ions, de as a ing
many u al communi ies. In he 1930s,
one ou o h ee Alaska Na i es died o
TB. In sou hwes e n Alaska, Yup’ik people
had one o he highes epo ed incidence
and p e alence a es in he wo ld. By he
1950s, i was es ima ed ha one ou o
e e y hi y indigenous Alaskans was in a
ube culosis sana o ium, mos loca ed ou -
side o Alaska in he Sea le/Tacoma a ea,
emaining he e o wo o mo e yea s.
Un il he mid o la e 1950s he e we e no
enough TB beds in Alaska o ea all he
pa ien s; people o en had o wai se e al

By he mid 1950s, a massi e public
heal h campaign agains TB in Alaska was
well unde way, and wi hin wo decades

mo bidi y and mo ali y a es wi h he
in oduc ion o in ensi e con ol e o s,
including chemo he apy, qua an ine
measu es, and su eillance. By he 1970s,
ube culosis was no longe he p ima y
cause o dea h among Alaska Na i es. E en
a e o e 40 yea s o public heal h in e -
en ion, howe e , ube culosis emains
a signi i can and se ious ch onic heal h
p oblem among Alaska Na i es. In 2000,
he ac i e case a e in Alaska was 17.2 ou
o 100,000, which was he highes a e in

ways indigenous people esponded in hei
