5. Discussion
5.1 Communica i e Func ion:
Onoma opoeic wo ds in bo h Uzbek and English play a c ucial ole in con eying senso y in o ma ion
quickly and i idly. In Uzbek olklo e and o al li e a u e, wo ds like shu -shu immedia ely e oke
he sound o wa e lowing in a i e o ain alling, allowing he lis ene o cons uc a men al audi o y
image. Simila ly, g‘u -g‘u ep esen s umbling, o en o a i e o hunde , p o iding cues no only
o sound bu also o mo emen , mood, and en i onmen . In daily speech, hese wo ds also con ey
emo ion: o example, qa s (a sha p c ack) signals sudden ac ion o su p ise, making na a i es mo e
engaging and in e ac i e.
In English, wo ds such as buzz, clang, and splash se e pa allel communica i e unc ions. Buzz may
indica e he li e al sound o insec s o machines, bu i can also ca y me apho ical meaning, as in
“ he buzz o exci emen ,” e lec ing how sound can signal emo ional s a es. Clang con eys me allic
impac while c ea ing a sense o ab up ness o ension in na a i e con ex s. Such wo ds a e o en
employed in bo h spoken and w i en language o enhance unde s anding, e oke senso y image y,
and main ain lis ene o eade a en ion.
This communica i e unc ion is uni e sal: humans ac oss cul u es end o map audi o y expe iences
o linguis ic o ms. Cogni i e linguis s a gue ha hese mappings e lec inhe en pe cep ual
associa ions be ween sounds and hei meanings (Dingemanse, 2012). Thus, onoma opoeic wo ds
ope a e as a b idge be ween ex e nal eali y and in e nal cogni i e ep esen a ion, p o iding
immedia e, in ui i e unde s anding.
5.2 S ylis ic Func ion
Beyond basic communica ion, onoma opoeic wo ds se e a sophis ica ed s ylis ic unc ion in bo h
languages, con ibu ing o hy hm, na a i e ension, image y, and aes he ic e ec . In Uzbek o al
poe y and s o y elling, ideophones a e o en epea ed o combined o p ese e cadence and hy hm.

Fo example, a ph ase like shu -shu , g‘u -g‘u no only mimics na u al sounds bu also s uc u es
he na a i e in a way ha suppo s o al pe o mance. Such hy hmic use helps he audience an icipa e
pa e ns and enhances memo abili y, a key ea u e o o al adi ions.
In w i en Uzbek li e a u e, poe s such as Abdulla O ipo use ideophones o e oke i id na u al
image y and o in ensi y emo ional esonance. Simila ly, in English li e a u e, onoma opoeic wo ds
a e s a egically used o achie e s ylis ic goals. Nu se y hymes o en ely on wo ds like ick- ock and
ding-dong o es ablish a musical, hy hmic quali y ha is bo h memo able and engaging. In no els,
au ho s may use wo ds like c ash, slam, o whispe o gene a e ension, simula e sound e ec s, o
con ey mood. English w i e s also c ea i ely o m compounds (click-clack, zip-zap) o employ
su ixa ion (buzzing, clangy) o manipula e hy hm and s ylis ic e ec .
Thus, in bo h languages, onoma opoeia unc ions as a s ylis ic de ice, shaping how s o ies, poems,
and e e yday na a i es a e expe ienced, while enhancing he exp essi e ange o language.
5.3 Cul u al Implica ions
The s ylis ic and communica i e unc ions o onoma opoeic wo ds a e deeply embedded in cul u al
con ex s. In Uzbek, ideophones e lec ag a ian and o al adi ions, emphasizing na u al sounds such
as i e s (shu -shu ), wind (sa g‘-sa g‘), o animal noises (miya -miya o a ca ). These wo ds do
mo e han imi a e sound: hey encode cul u al ways o in e ac ing wi h he en i onmen and ca y
symbolic signi icance in olklo e and adi ional na a i es. Fo example, he epe i ion and
elonga ion o ideophones o en signal espec o na u al o ces o highligh mo al o emo ional cues
in s o y elling.
In con as , English onoma opoeia e lec s no only na u al sounds bu also he mechanized and u ban
en i onmen s cha ac e is ic o English-speaking cul u es. Wo ds such as clank, beep, and zip eplica e
indus ial o echnological sounds, showing adap a ion o ideophones o mode n li e. Li e a y and
popula cul u e u he shape hei usage: comic books, ad e isemen s, and child en’s li e a u e
exploi onoma opoeic wo ds o humo , d ama ic e ec , o senso y emphasis.
This compa ison demons a es ha while he uni e sal unc ion o sound imi a ion is sha ed, i s
s ylis ic ealiza ion is cul u ally speci ic. Onoma opoeia hus unc ions as bo h a mi o o
en i onmen al in e ac ion and a e lec ion o socie al and li e a y no ms.
5.4 Phonoseman ic Pa e ns
Phonoseman ic pa e ns e eal how each language s uc u ally o ganizes sound-meaning
co espondence. In Uzbek, eduplica ion is he mos common s a egy o in ensi y meaning, con ey
du a ion, o signal epea ed ac ion (shu -shu , g‘u -g‘u , miya -miya ). Reduplica ion p o ides
bo h seman ic emphasis and hy hmic con inui y, se ing as a mnemonic and aes he ic de ice in o al
and w i en adi ions.
English, howe e , o en employs mo phological de i a ion and alli e a ion o achie e simila
e ec s. Base onoma opoeic wo ds can be ex ended wi h su ixes o c ea e e bs o adjec i es (buzz
→ buzzing, clang → clangy) o combined in compounds o heigh en s ylis ic impac ( ick- ock, zip-
zap). Addi ionally, alli e a ion and consonance in English o en ampli y hy hm and s ylis ic
p ominence, especially in poe y, child en’s li e a u e, and onoma opoeic comic exp essions.
These di e ences illus a e ha while he communica i e unc ion o onoma opoeia is uni e sal, he
s uc u al and s ylis ic adap a ion is language-speci ic. Uzbek and English exploi di e en
phonoseman ic s a egies— eduplica ion s. su ixa ion/alli e a ion— o achie e exp essi e,
hy hmic, and s ylis ic goals.

5.5 In eg a ion o Communica i e, S ylis ic, and Cul u al Func ions
Onoma opoeic wo ds in eg a e communica i e, s ylis ic, and cul u al unc ions in a dynamic
