Callon (1998) and MacKenzie (2007) ha e p oposed ha economics is a pe o ma i e

(MacKenzie, 2007: 54). Economics, hen, is an ac i e pa o a se ies o social, poli ical and

The idea o he ma ke as a machine is no a new one. Da ies and McGoey (2012) a gue
ha Mil on F iedman and his colleagues in he Chicago School used i as a way o
unde s anding how people should ac wi hin a gi en se o condi ions. Building on his idea o
homo economicus, mo e abs ac ed models eme ged o calcula ing isk and nego ia ing
complex socio-economic si ua ions (Da ies and McGoey, 2012: 71). The key he e is he idea o
p edic abili y, which ende s economics as a ‘ha d’ science wi h he abili y o obse e epea ed
